Does anyone have a photo and stats? I never understood this car and its cult-like following?

I don't really see what is so impressive about this car.
90 grand for a car that according to this site has figures like this.

    0-60 mph: 5.1 sec
    0-100 mph: 13.0 sec
    Quarter Mile: 13.7 sec @ 105 mph
    Skidpad: .89g
    Top Speed: 155 mph
    Braking, 60-0 mph: 121 ft
    Slalom Speed: 68.1 mph

At least the braking and slalom are decent.

I'm relatively sure they don't cost 90k overseas- closer to Corvette pricing-- and the modification potential in these cars are unbelievable- worth 100k+ if you're into that scene...

The new skyline is apparently going to look something like this.

I think the popularity of the car comes from the racing series in japan, it was dominant for a long time.It is also easily modifiable.

Totally agree about the not so impressive about this car, I raced with it once with the real bad azz looking. I was in my Lotus Esprit. It accelerated well until about 160 mph, that's when I started to pull away and gone at 175 mph.
I guess they are a step up for those Mitsu. Evo. or Subaru impreza guys. But no where near top European exotics...

Sadly, when they finally give us the Skyline, it's a crappy shadow of its former self.
It's like lusting after the Ford Mustang GTs of the 1960's and only getting the 1970's Mustang II.

For those of you who fail the recognize how good the Skyline is, consider, you're comparing what is essentially a hot four seat sedan with excellent performance to exotics like the Lotus. Next, you'll be comparing BMW M3s to McLaren F1s. And before you jump on the price you quoted, I think that figure is suspect, considering you can get used R32-34 Skyline GTRs for 1/4 of that price. Either the Skyline GTR has some of the worst resale value in the world (not likely), or your price is way high. IIRC, the price was more along the lines of $40-45k or so.

It's also worth noting that the Skyline GT-R engine is overbuilt, and it's quite easy to up the the boost for more power.

Its a sedan not a sports car. What do you expect? For Nissan to have made a 2005 BMW M5, but to have made it six years ago, and at half price?

I think they are pretty good looking... But 90K is way to much for that car.

The R34 GT-R is a massive machine that really is capable. It may not look like much, but the intelligent AWD and twin turbo's can really throw down. When the R34 was introduced, it dominated a Japan racing series. When I mean dominated, a R34 won every single race easily. After that, the car was banned from the racing series, and several other racing series. A special class of R34's only were allowed to compete among themselves as a sanctioned racing body.

Here is a video of a 600hp Mines Skyline vs a Toyota Supra on a track. The parts on the Mines R34 GT-R are all commercially available. The motor itself costs $25K and you supply the motor. But you get the capability for 600hp at a minimum.

Nizpro, the makers of the F355TT kit, also have a 937HP RB26DETT motor (Skyline).

I think I'm qualified to comment on this thread because I've owned both GTR-R33 V-Spec and the GTR-R34 Nurburgring Specs. Funny acronyms these Japs have, but the performance are nothing short of Stunning.
As for the quoted HP figures and specs, they're oft quoted from the ' Japanese Domestic Market 280 PS- Peg Performance Test '. When I bought my 33, with the car came a box with a 'chip' and some Jap-Lish instructions. In Malaysia, Skylines are Gods and there are many tuners familiar with the BNR32 series engines way back since the first iteration of the Godzilla, the GTR-32.( some die-hards still say they're the best...). Three hours later, the dyno sheets proved a flywheel HP of 385..( the original readings are at 283..3 horses more than permitted..) That was without any other mods..

I only swapped the exhaust for Nismo units, 320km'h speedo and that's about it. Didn't dyno it after that, plenty fast enough and even though the engines are so-called bulletproof I didn't want to test the claims. Much the same story as with the GTR-R34. The Nurburgring is the last edition V-specs and even though it's uglier IMO compared to the 33..mine came with pistachio/puke green Mica paint!! it goes like a bat outta hell, and cars will definitely move out when they see the gaping mouth in their rear-view mirrors. With these cars, on Asian roads you're regarded as one very cool dude who knows cars...not really rich..I only stopped being a turbo-junkie last year when finances allows me to go in search of my dream car.

FWIW, the Skyline GTR series are great cars. Different power delivery and different kind of 'feeling' for different people. They might be a bit crass or uncouth for some refined tastes, but it will always be special to me and many other petrolheads in countries where it is available for sale. It's truly worthy of the praise and accolade......try one if you ever get the chance.. JMO

BTW : In Malaysia, the cars are about 25% of the list price of a 355 (GTR R33) and about 22% of a 360M ( GTR R34 ). The prices are for brand new vehicles, in their corresponding years, '95 and '00. Your USD90k is about right for a Skyline....but you guys are lucky when it comes to the exotics!

Tifosi66 - nice writeup. simple and personal, and indeed... they are quite unique.

I do have a one hour special from the UK regarding the evolution of the skyline and what tuners do to them over there. It fits on a CD and is a hair under 700MB.

As already noted, the Skylines come out of the box plugged up to meet the horsepower limitations and you only need a few items to get them going extremely fast. One 355 owner on here has an R32 which performs in the Sport Compact Car Challenge each year. It is very very impressive.

I've "tried" to follow an R33 around some mountain roads in SoCal. And I was AMAZED at the grip and speed of that car. I very quickly lost sight of him. Just unbelievable.

I think this car is overhyped, and the stock #'s aren't the most impressive thing you'll see in the GTR's price range, but they're very potent machines. The AWD system is said to be world-class and the engine is overbuilt and relatively easy to get huge hp out of much like the Supra TT. And when these things are modified, very few cars can hang with it.

This rumor has come around more times than I can count over the past 10 years. I will believe it when I see it. As of yet the newest GT-R has yet to even surface in Japan. Just plenty more rumors, fake spy shots, etc.

I think you misunderstand the GTR as it is. The numbers from the factory are 1) typically incorrect but only there to show the legality of the under ~286hp rating that the Japanese market imposes and 2) it is easily modifiable out of the box, which is basically the same as popping a cork on a bottle: the power is already there, it just needs to be a little more accessible with airflow in and out.

As another interesting point about the GT-R, the Skyline is basically a Crown Victoria made by Nissan for Japan. It is supposed to be a big, boring sedan so the very fact that they were able to make it into a performance car is pretty impressive. Imagine what it would take to convert a Crown Victoria into a serious sports sedan. The Skyline is also one of the best platforms to tune and power as well as the resulting performance gains are plentiful and remarkably effective. The new GT-R will not dissapoint. It is rumored to have as much power as the 490hp Nismo edition that was just released and the target for performance is the Porsche 911.
