Hi all, I am new to Ferrari. I have owned many interesting cars, but not a single supercar. My journey started with a Rover Mini Cooper, then I moved on to an M2, M4, Benz E300 convertible, Targa 4S, and many more. Currently, I own a Miata and a G63, both with less than 1000km over a year. My daily driver is an X7 M60i with three baby seats =)

Now, I am thinking of taking it to the next level and considering a Ferrari! After watching hours of YouTube videos and browsing many websites, I've narrowed down my options to the 458, 488, or F8, all in the spider model. I know the 458 is the last naturally aspirated model, but it's already 10 years old, and the lowest mileage I can find in Canada is 15,000km at 360,000 CAD. For the 488 Spider, I can still find some with 6,000km at the same price of 360,000 CAD, despite being 2-3 years younger than the 458. As for the F8 Spider, all I can find are low mileage ones with only 5,000km at 550,000 CAD. Is it worth paying an extra 200k to upgrade from the 458 to the F8? I'm not sure about this.

I dont know how long I will keep my Ferrari but I have no plan to order a new one becoz it is too pricy. Driving enjoyment (i am not a racer) and the depreciation would be my biggest concerns. So any suggestion for me? I am not in hurry becoz I have cars to drive and a miata to enjoy the summer. Please give me some suggestions and many thanks in advance!

I’m biased since I have a 458, but for me it’s either the naturally aspirated 458 or you might as well get a F8 still under warranty as the final evolution of the mid engined v8 with all the kinks worked out of the electronics. Only downside is the f8 is still probably on the steeper part of depreciation whereas the 458 seems to have flattened out.

I do think that all of these are dependent on the sound for engagement since you’ll never get the same involvement or momentum driving you have with your 3 pedal Miata on a modern dual clutch car.

If depreciation is a concern, then buy a Speciale. Moreover experience is a blast.

A good 458 spider is the way to go, great sound from idle, all the way to the red line

Get what you can afford and what speaks to you the most. Outside of that everyone here will only tell you to get the model they have.

Beyond youtube, you should do everything to drive the three cars and decide for yourself.
The performance gap is bigger between the 458 and 488 than between the 488 and F8, but on the other hand the 458 is N/A, which may be a personal preference.
Future depreciation of the F8 is likely to be worse, since it's more recent and has not really begun to significantly drop in price.
I might be biased towards a 488, but I don't like spiders anyway, so I have no horse in your race :p

Maybe he was referring to the movie, despite the lack of quotes; but even in the movie it was said as a putdown not a joke.

Further he gets no slack in this regard as this is just another in a series of derogatory comments.

the problem is it is difficult to find a good condition 458 spider in the market, most of them are at high mileage, i.e. 20000km up. For 488 spider i can still find some with 5000km, also the condition is better. I probably give up the F8 bcoz the price is too high at the moment. Any more thoughts? thanks!

My next will be a 488 - so you should get "not a 488" to reduce demand (and price) in my market! :)

Drive them all and see for yourself. Before I bought a 458 I test drove all the models. 458, 488, Huracan, Maserati (LOL)

458 was the most fun to drive for me personally.

My daily drivers are both fully loaded 2024 m340i and 2022 Audi Q5E.

Every time I get into the 458 for spirted drives it is the most fun I have. The only thing i'd say that feels outdated about the 458 is the infotainment but you can get an apple carplay mod for $1000 these days.

The engine and transmission does not feel outdated at all. I also don't think the car looks outdated with paint correction, carbon fins and diffuser.

Reliability wise - I have had 0 issues with the car. I had it for 6 years now and used it as my daily driver for a few years as well.

458 too old, the only thing getting too old is me. But heck I also drive 50 year old muscle cars from Detroit and they run as good as NEW!

I also love 458 spider, just the price is pretty much the same as 488 spider with 3 yr older and 20k more mileage... this is why i am struggling now.

Looking at the 2 cars, for me the answer is straightforward. Do you want the last NA v8 (yes) or do you want that poor sounding turbo (boo). Are you good with the fish gullets in the rear quarters on the 488 which you will see every time you look at it or, would you prefer the clean seductive lines of the 458? Its up to you. I bet you can tell which one I own ha ha. I have owned mine for getting on 3 years, love it and plan on keeping it. With the 458 you are contemplating, I am from the camp to find the best one I can, wherever it is, with the lowest mileage and the fewest owners. GL on the hunt. The hunt is half the fun!

My response is the direct opposite of the above… LOVE the fish gullets as it defines any mid engine supercar whereas the 458 is bland and awful styling. Also the 488 sounds VERY nice without having to yell at your passenger…. I could go on but the 488 and ESPECIALLY the F8 are leap years ahead of the 458 in every category-

No offense but if depreciation is a concern you will not have an enjoyable ownership.
