Meet the Lamborghini that can seat four people but still gets a 5.2-litre V10 capable of 310km/h … and a $600,000 price tag. By TOBY HAGON and the Drive team at the 2008 Paris motor show.

    Lamborghini Estoque

Lamborghini has stunned the automotive world – and not least its supercar rivals Ferrari, Porsche and Aston Martin – by unveiling a wild looking four-door sedan called the Estoque on the eve of the 2008 Paris motor show.

The new V10-powered Lamborghini Estoque is officially described as a concept car but is already under serious consideration for production according to well placed sources at Lamborghini’s Sant’Agata headquarters.

With a top speed in excess of 300km/h and characteristic Lamborghini styling, the Estoque neatly extends Lamborghini’s flamboyant design language and emotional appeal to a highly fancied third model line that could almost double the Italian brand’s sales.

The Estoque also offers a level of interior accommodation and practicality well beyond that of the two-door Gallardo and larger Murcielago.

The performance and dynamic qualities of Lamborghini’s Estoque promise to set lofty standards of excellence if (or when) it hits the road in anger.

Described by Lamborghini as extreme and uncompromising, the Estoque aims to compete in an area of the market presently occupied by the Ferrari 612 Scaglietti and soon to include two similarly conceived upmarket sedan rivals in the form of the Porsche Panamera and elegant Aston Martin Rapide.

The Estoque name follows Lamborghini tradition by possessing links with bullfighting; “estoque” is a Spanish word referring to the traditional sword worn by a matador.

Some may be shocked to find a Lamborghini with its engine placed in front of the driver, never mind with four seats and a compact boot for at least some luggage. However, there is precedence here in the form of the much cherished Espada produced between 1968 and 1978.

It is the spirit of that car the incumbent Lamborghini management has clearly set out to rekindle with the Estoque, albeit with one vital difference: A practical four-door layout that should see it appeal to a much wider customer base than the Gallardo and Murcielago.

With a record 2406 sales during 2007, Lamborghini is desperate to maintain the momentum gained in recent years.

The main elements of the Estoque were laid down at the beginning of April 2008 as part of an in-house brand-building exercise. The Estoque show car was completed at the end of September just in time for its 2008 Paris motor show unveiling.

The result is a lengthy and wide, low sedan with a four-door aluminium body peppered with typically flamboyant styling cues as well as a raft of new design details that should start finding their way onto new Lamborghini models in the not too distant future.

The Estoque is a car with a look of great strength and presence – helped by a wedge shaped front-end, taut lines and bold rear haunches that house giant 23-inch rear wheels shod with 19-inch Pirelli P-Zero Rosso tires.

But beyond that, it is unmistakably a Lamborghini, despite offering up four conventional front hinged doors.

But you shouldn’t think of the Estoque simply as being a simple design exercise. Every facet of its exterior has been developed with production feasibility in mind, right on through to seeing it pass the tough European pedestrian safety laws.

As with the Gallardo, the new car is based around a sturdy but lightweight aluminum space frame that draws heavily on the construction technology developed by parent company Audi for the A8 limousine.

Lamborghini says calling the car a sports sedan doesn’t really fit the Estoque, preferring instead to call it a super sports sedan.

Unsurprisingly for a Lamborghini the Estoque doesn’t lack performance.

At the heart of the Lamborghini Estoque is the Italian car maker’s mighty 5.2-litre V10 engine.

In a departure from all other existing Lamborghini models, the V10 is mounted longitudinally underneath the uncharacteristically long bonnet.

To provide the best possible weight distribution, the front axle sits well forward, allowing the majority of the engine and all its various ancillaries to nestle within the wheelbase.

No power claims are being made, but in the Gallardo LP560 the very same engine kicks out 412kW at a soaring 8000rpm along with 540Nm of torque at 6500rpm. That should be sufficient to provide the Estoque with a 0-100km/h time somewhere in the region of 4.5 seconds and a top speed on the high side of 310km/h.

Drive is channelled to all four wheels via a six-speed semi-automated manual with Lamborghini’s E-gear remote shift paddles mounted behind the steering wheel.

Lamborghini also hints that other engines could grace the Estoque before long.

They include a new twin turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 and possibly even a 4.2-litre V8 diesel.

It also suggests the new car could be offered with a hybrid drivetrain, presumably drawing on the lithium-ion battery technology being developed by Audi for use on the next generation A8.

Lamborghini isn’t publicly committing itself to a production date for the Estoque, suggesting it first intends to gauge reaction to the new four-door before making any firm decisions on whether to build it or not.

Behind the scenes at its headquarters in Italy, though, the Italian supercar maker is already well advanced on a business plan that would see it join the Gallardo and a successor to today’s Murcielago in a highly attractive three-strong model line-up from 2011 onwards.

Lamborghini officials contacted by Drive prior to Estoque’s unveiling in Paris on Wednesday night hinted at a possible price around $600,000, with annual production of up to 2000– a figure that would effectively double the company’s volume.

I am not sure what I think of it yet. At least it is different; but I am not sure it fits the marque image.

The car will need more than a Gallardo's power and torque to complete in the big sedan market. Without a V12 it won't be in the hunt.

Who is this car aimed for? Seems a bit pointless in that price bracket.

Based on the new A8 platform.

i think they'll give it the go ahead, since aston/porsche are doing 4 doors.

i don't mind if lambo do sedans, or off road, or whatever. but stay true to the brand, make something outragerous, something everyone look at will go "Countach!" instead of "hmm, nice."
