whats the consensus on this bike, if the price is right, i like to take this home. never been ridden too! whats the price on such a brand new example? thanks.
this is a great bike but unloved by many due to the styling. great runner and a cool r version. i have no idea of the pricing but i suspect there should not be a premium or even sticker to be paid due to its being new.
funny i much prefer the 999 styling than the later 1098s, and yea, this bike is asking pretty much its sticker when new which i think is high.
Should pay no more than $16-18k for it, even though it is new. If you plan to start it expect leaks and you must put new belts on it due to age. I had a 999 and despite being a great-riding bike, it will never have the following of the bikes that came before or after. The 999 afficianados are a small if devoted bunch.
When the Ducati 999R Fila edition came out in 2004 MSRP on it was $35,000. That bike won 2 WSBK titles. It was replaced by the 999R Xerox edition in 2006 and won a WSBK title again. Since these guys cant sell it. The probably want somewhere in the mid $20s.
999 is ugly and almost made Ducati go bankrupt!!! I can tell you do not ride motobikes because your knowledge of ducati goes back only as far as the 749/999 series. The 916/996 series was the best looking Ducs of all time!
...TRUE. I own an early 916 (Cagiva/ Verese built)... sexy as hell. The 999 are great bikes but fugly looking.
Arguably, the best looking BIKES of all time. The 916, for me, was so over the top and influential - as well as successful - it must be considered one of the greatest motorcycles in history. I already LOVED the 851 / 888 series, and the 916 made that look like child's play. I will own a 916, probably a 996, but would take any version, bur must be red!
I have a 996 but use it for track use so it is all bare carbon fiber not red anymore. I have a red 1198SP and a mattte black monster 695
I have a "normal" 999R so am somewhat biased. To me the 999 is the only Duc that looks different from every other Japanese bike on the road. If you like to conform it may not be for you. Think of it as the Ferrari F50 of motorcycles. I would offer 15K and see what happens.
I disagree that the 749/999 is still universally shunned in the marketplace. They really are the last truly handbuilt Ducati Superbikes. More and more peeps are warming up to the styling which I find purposeful/exotic/esoteric/beautiful all at once. Brilliant bikes to ride. A 999R is a serious bit of kit. If you are getting one to actually ride a fair bit, the '05/'06 version is slightly upgraded over the '03/'04. This '04 749R with 1500 miles I recently sold for $17k with more buyers waiting. I say if you like the bike and it is in the mid to hi teens go for it. edit... I just read that they want original msrp. Yowzers. Find an '05/'06 999R with mods and miles for $15k, they are out there. Image Unavailable, Please Login
I raced a 749R, 999R and 999RS over 4 years. A 999R is a far better handling bike than the old 916 series bikes. The thick, cast engine cases of the 999R give the engine longevity which the others lack (I think the 1098R has the stronger cases as well). The 749R has the better rear swingarm linkage however - you need to swap it out. I loved racing these bikes even though they were expensive to run. I would compare that 999R to the cost of a Panigale, if the PG is close in price, the 999R is too expensive. The PG is about as fast as my old RS, but runs on pump gas and has a warranty - a heck of a bike.
I think the 999 looks good in track trim but horrible in street trim. The 916 is stunning in any form and all the Japanese bike started to look like it towards the end because of that. The R1 in 1998 was the first to emulate it and it continued from there. Google images of the bikes in 1995 and compare them when the 916 debuted.
I've owned Ducatis from the Bevel Drive to a 996. All handled well, and the F1 I rode got me two championships (85 & 88) in the twins class. The latest bike is the best. They kept improving these bikes. I'd buy the PG even if there is a price differential. Unless you like antiques. Art
