Yesterday, armed with much bravado and a few pages of info, downloaded from FC, we, Chris (the owner of a perfect 348) and I changed the tranny fluid on my 308. Neither one of us had ever attempted this before. But with the help of a couple of cheater bars, we were able to complete the job. Then we went for a test drive. The engine was cold, I put it in first and took off. Then I tried to shift into second and d*** it went right in! I could not believe it and showed Chris the stick sitting in second. He said 'I didn't see it, try it again'. So I slowed down, put it back into first, then sped up again and shifted right into second as pretty as you please. We were both amazed. I am now a firm believer in Redline. The stuff works.

My very first post!! No more lurking!! Any way I will be doing a clutch job on my 1982 Ferrari 308 in the next couple of weeks and have a question concerning the transmission drain allen bolt. Could you tell me what size it is? Mine is different from my engine (probably should be). Where did you get your redline oil?
I have rebuilt a 1980 308 engine in the past (took 9 months) and this is my second Ferrari. My first one was perfect, beautiful!! The one I have now is a daily driver and I drive it 200+ smiles a week. I have learned a lot on my own (painfully at times) but recently found this sight and absolutly love it. I wish I would have found it years ago!!! I have become farmiliar with this car and do ALL maint. myself. I'm not scared of anything!!! I have the same love for these car that alot of you have and its good to have freind that can and will help each other when needed. Sorry for going on and thanks in advance for your time and advice.

Has no one else had a problem with their Limited-Slip clutches chattering with the Redline NS? My TR isn't horrible for selecting second when cold, and it was slightly improved with the Redline NS, but the LS clutch noise was just terrible during slow speed manuevers (a low frequency "groaning-moaning") -- for example, making a right turn from a stop sign. Anyone else notice this with the Redline NS?

I was using Mobile 75w90 and no chatter. Switched to anothe gearfluid based on a dealership recommendation, lots of chatter. Finally, switched to Redline 75W90NS based on the recommendations here and the chatter is gone. From now on, only Redline.

Branko's drain plugs had not a spec of metal on them. Old, old gear fluid was in there (nasty smell and dark, dark appearance), and he drives his 308 regularly.

So now I've changed gear oil on a Euro 308 (once) and a 348 (several times). 4 drain/fill plugs, remove a wheel, remove the inner-wheel fender, and remove a heat shield to change the gear oil on the Euro 308...just 1 fill plug and just 1 drain plug to remove (nothing else!) to change the gear oil on my 348.

The Redline products are awesome, too. No chatter. Smooth shifts (even into 2nd gear!). People who tell you not to use 2nd gear when cold in a Ferrari simply haven't used the right gear oil. They just don't know any better.

I can recommend RedLine's MTL, Superlight Shockproof, and RedLine's 75w90NS from firsthand experience.

Oh, one more thing. Branko's Euro 308 tranny had not a drop of condensation in his old gear oil.

If you use RedLine's SuperLight shockproof in your 348, however, you may experience condensation (I did).

Get prepared to replace your axle seals.

Redline synthetic oils have a detergent which will clean the crusty deposits that were preventing your old oil from leaking out. Use Viton single lip seals.

I had problems when the car was warm that at a stop I had difficulties putting it in first. It wouldn't happen when cold only after about 1/2 hour of driving.I replaced the tranny oil with redline and it hasn't happened since. It gets my vote

    Sure have!
I found most customers do not feel or understand the chatter / groan but it drives me nuts. I have finally found a mixture of additive that prevents this but still allows the sincro's to work well.
Mobil changed their formula last year to include too much additive in the qt bottles and NO additive in the 30# drums.
I had enough with Mobil changing their formula's and with paying double the price of Walmart when I am buying 55 gallon drums of oil. The local Mobil lubricant dealer has cut inventory to a minimum as he ended up with half a warehouse full of the old "non extended life oil" he is stuck with and none of his retailers want on the shelves.
I have completely converted to Redline now. I have used the Redline in the race cars for 20+ years with no problems, now the street cars are all getting it as well. Back to working with qt and gallon jugs until I settle on a weight that works well at these temps. Open up the landfills as Redline is also more expensive after shipping when buying it in 55 gal. drums. Makes no sense! When I finally settle on a weight we will end up eating the added expense on our end as it bothers me filling a dumpster with drained containers.

I have been using Redline in my gearbox for 3 years now without any problems (including about 15,000 miles and 3 track events). I recommend it.

Need to change the gear oil in my 328 & I'm probably going to go the Redline route.

Does anyone have any experience of using a blend of 75W90NS mixed with some plain 75W90 ? Is it better to do this as a preventative to the LSD chatter & if so what would be the recommended ratio? I was thinking of putting in one bottle (quart) of 75W90 & then the rest 75W90NS.

    Any thoughts?

I read on one of the threads that they spoke to Redline and they said to use 80% NS and 20% regular. Either way it can't hurt it to add the regular.

Even though I have never had issues getting my car into 2nd gear while cold, I just figure that I would change to Redline, due to all the good feedback.

    I am doing mine tonight.

Color me the only guy using Amsoil Severe Gear Synthetic Extreme Pressure (EP) 75W-90 Lubricant. i AM NOT an Amsoil head, but their tranny oil has a cult following with some guys??? Anywho, the point is the SVG is for 'Sever Use' and has some NS and is said to not thin down, yada, yada...

What matters is how it works. No chatter, 2nd gear, and all shifting for that matter, is smooth. i planned to change it mid-year as i track a lot. Put in fresh this spring and now after about 25 track days she is still fine. Decided to do a R/R this weekend as we are installing a new lightweight flywheel/race clutch and Nick's oil pan mod so may as well put in frsh oil and tranny fluid.

Anywho, here is a link to their info page on the stuff. Trust me when i say i AM NOT (overly) kind to my tranny/clutch. Do not abuse it of course, though am not Mr. Super Soft Shift either. Hey, its a race track :)

You will need to buy 4 quarts for a 328, uses roughly 3 1/2.

put it in my 348....very happy, with the stuff I was schooled by many experts that we need NS - non slip for the synchros to "bite" we actually need friction for the tranny to work properly. something like that

The book says 4 litres (which is more or less 4 quarts) & then you need a bit for the transfer case - I'd buy 5 quarts.

I've been using Redline for 3 years now including my own TR and have had no noise problems but maybe it is because too many race cars and too much rifle shooting has taken it's toll on my ears. I even have it in a few Daytonas without noise problems and in my experience those were the worst for noisy diffs.

first change made when i bought the mondi was to redline fluids. 2nd gear joined the crowd that day.

now what's real interesting is superchargers have a charictristic gear whine from straight cut gears. the head unit on my mondi is barly auidible, i use 10~30wt redline and the only time you hear the gear whine is at shut off when the engine slows past 500rpm. otherwise it's not noticable at all. and no i didn't spring for the SQ gears as the price wasn't worth it to me.

So 20% (or so) 75W90 or just pure 75W90NS? What's the concensus amongst existing Redline users?
