I decided I would post my comments on the 92' Diablo I just bought from a collector up in Virginia. It always has been my dream car and I finally realized that dream this week, after convincing my wife life was short and you only live once!!. Having had 6 Ferraris, Vipers, Lotus, NSX's, etc, etc, I can say that I am very glad to have gone to the dark side. It is well worth the monthly payments that are coming (or going?)!!!
Since I just sold the Testarossa (1988.5), I thought I would give it a little comparison to the Diablo for prospective buyers out there. Oddly enough, the guy that sold me the TR was getting into a Diablo, so the trend continues. First, the Diablo has had its major services, updated clutch, tensioners, etc, 28K miles, and clean in my opinion, and yes, AJ's also. When AJ said I did good, I was reassured about spending close to $85K for the car. I wanted an early one for budget reasons and also I like the lighter 2WD version.
I drove it down from DC to Atlanta (600 miles) all in one shot, no problems whatsoever, it never misbehaved or overheated, that says a lot about its history I guess. I was concerned it may break down on me, but it drove perfect, just like my TR would have, so it was a great trip, sunny all the way.
The TR was a very comfortable ride for long trips, and the Diablo has a little more "sporty feel" to it, you can feel all the bumps on the road for sure, and not much room for storage on the Diablo compared to the TR's huge trunk and rear deck shelf. Even without having a spare, there was just enough room for my duffle bag and car cover in the trunk.
While the TR felt a little heavy when trying to pass, the Diablo has so much more torque that it made it feel lighter than it actually is, so the power is there, in any gear, at any speed, very nice to have.
The first thing I had to get used to was the visibility as the Diablo's gauge cluster is way up high, but after 10 miles or so, I was well adjusted, the cockpit feels like one of a jet fighter, ready for combat. The TR is a more user friendly car all around, but it just doesn't have that "sex appeal" the Diablo has. I stopped twice for gas, and both times there was half a dozen onlookers with their camera phones, asking questions, that never happened in the TR even in the 8 months I had it. If you don't like to make friends easily or like the attention, the Diablo is not for you. But if you are considering a Diablo and don't mind the attention, that alone right there will not make you regret the price you paid. All you have to do is open one door, and look for the cameras to arrive, it's incredible.
As far as visibility, the TR is a little better, specially on the blind spots, but they are both Ok in that field considering how large they are. The Diablo is slung so low that I was a little nervous about what was in front of me at higher speeds, unlike the TR, but all in all, who cares, it's a Diablo!! Backing up a Diablo is a little more work than it was in the TR also, I wish mine had that rear view camera.
I think that both cars handle about the same at high speeds (120 is all I had the guts to do on the highway), but I wouldn't know how to compare them on the track, I personally will not track mine, I cherish it too much.
Of course both have an incredible sound, although I prefer mine since it has a Quicksilver exhaust, and you can hear it from far away.
I would call the TR a sophisticated classy sports car, where I would call the Diablo a raw and sexy exotic car.
I will always have a passion for Ferrari, but I have to say that Lamborghini has converted me into a true lover of the marque.
Thanks to all of you who helped me making the right decisions, and making my dream come true.

Very nice write-up Stephane. Your car is truly exceptional. I too have owned my share of TR's, from 85-91(when the Diablo came out). I would agree with all of your statements. It will never get "old" driving this car, and a different experience awaits every time you take her out. As a side note, when Stephane was at my house, a woman in a van stopped, and said her 2 boys just asked her to slow down so they could look at the car. After we invited them for a closer look, and a trip to my garage as well, those 2 boys will not sleep tonight. The smiles made my day!!. Congrats Stephane, and I look forward to our Yellow caravan tomorrow!!

    Great write up.

Your car also gave me some major deja vous...When i was 10 I received a Yellow Diablo 1:18 model exactly like yours (it had a spoiler though) and just some memories of first seeing a Lambo flooded back to me right now. Your car is pretty much what got me into Lambo's. Congrats !

Great write-up Stephane!! And thank you for the direct comp between a TR and a Diablo. I've had my '91 TR for about 2 1/2 years and 17k miles, and love it. The comfort and driveability are great and it does get plenty of looks and attention here in CT, but a Diablo would get a lot more looks. The idea of an upgrade has been bouncing around my brain for a short while now, and I've been thinking of a 512 TR, or maybe a 550. But thanks to your write-up, I will add a Lambo Diablo to the list of maybes. Enjoy your Diablo!!!

    Thanks Dwight,

I will always have the TR in my heart as the best Ferrari ever made, I wish I could have kept it with the Diablo, I think they are both the icons of the era.

    Take care,

very courageous endeavor on your part (i'd be scared to death to drive it that far). more importantly, the uneventful outcome was also a testament on the quality of your find. congrats again, s.

    great comparison,these 2 cars.
    ive never driven a testarossa nor a 1st gen diablo;but i have driven a 512 tr
with some questionable bodykit as well as a diablo roadster '98.

1.the 512 hamann tr i drove was surprisingly tractable, civilised, refined and pretty darn quick!ive heard stories about the testarossa's high centre of gravity and reluctance to turn into fast corners.the 512 tr i drove showed no such problems;although the 550 maranello i was furtunate enough to drive completely obliterates it.judging by the relatively modest prices u can get a tr for nowadays,i think its great value and quite a good supercar all-round.
treat it with respect;both driving and maintaining;and it can be quite devatating both as a driving experiance and as a glamour-mobile.jaws still drop at the sight of this beast!a moderately spacious and practical interior as well as a decent boot makes this package even more desirable....then there's a small matter of close to 440bhp....

2.the diablo roadster vt i drove was superb.530bhp,4wd grip almost makes this a year-round supercar.ALMOST.the lack of any useable space inside and out makes this a car for those who pack lightly.cabin comfort is rather good, headroom, legspace far surpassing the claustrophobic countach.
a good-handling package but surprisingly devoid of much steering feel to the purist.which makes it a better car for the rest of us;not as highly strung as a car of this manner would usually be.the sv,gt,gt-r versions as well as the 'audi'-fied diablos are the best by my reckoning.

verdict:the ferrari 512m/tr is a tasty bit of kit;sort of like having monica belucci on your arm at a gala dinner.sensational to look at,great abilities as well as being ever so sophisticated.(despite the unfortunate miami vice connection)an overall very good package and an excellent 1st 'v12' purchase
    for any tifosi.
the diablo,on the other hand;is like porn starlet aria giovanni.everyone memorises its curves inside out,has fantasized about her at one point and claims that the other is the better, more complete package.but when deciding which one u'd rather be alone with, there's no contest.the DIABLO wins.

    Stephane,
Sorry to highjack. I'm very interested in getting a Diablo 6.0 and noticed that you've owned a NSX too. Mines a '01, and I'm interested in a '01 6.0, but from your experiences how are they similar or different in such areas as handling, control, fealing, fun factor ect. I know there's going be a difference due to various years (plus I expect the Diablo to deffently rise above the NSX), but if you don't mind and get a chance I'ld appreciate if you could just take a brief minute and give me your insight on the two. You can just PM me if you'ld like to keep from getting off topic. If you don;t get a chance, that's ok too, I understand.

Bravo! More power to you that you had the wing removed. The Diablo really loses some of the purity of its amazing lines with that thing tacked on in back.

Yellow over black is simply stunning!

    Hi Dan,

I am not sure if you are asking about a comparison between the Diablo and the NSX, but if you are, I had a 91' NSX, only a couple of years after it came out, and I loved its reliability and smooth power on the highway, excellent handling all around, great sports car with a lot of class, but I think the Diablo has a great deal more of the "fun factor" not to mention power and sound, which has to be tamed, not for the beginner driver. I would take the NSX over any other Japanese makes as my daily driver, but the Diablo I think is in a league of its own, and the 6.0 is one of the better Diablos out there as far as I have heard.
    Good luck with your search!!
