    I see 2 things:

    1) The previously noted tubo da giardino verde.
    2) Clearly an alien was stuck inside the coolant hose... He/she did not get out in time and things did not end well, causing the green alien bits slime to go everywhere. My guess is that the alien was also using il tubo da giardino verde as a breathing tube.

    Cheers!

It kept perfect temperature on the highway. The problem is that everyone wants to live here and the traffic causes the highway to be a car park.

I noticed the boot lever broken on the PPI pics, so I ordered one online, unfortunately not realising it should have "BAULE" stamped into it. Anyway, this arvo I removed the broken lever and installed the new, albeit plain, lever.

Made a start on the fuse boxes and immediately noted some bodgy work in the wiring - I just can't believe what some people will do to a car! I'll trace the wire tap (probably an old stereo or alarm instal), rip all the crap out, and return it to standard - before modifying it to make it better.

    I'll upload pics later

Who knows how long the DPO put up with having to open the boot via the emergency pull? It took me about an hour, mainly because I was feeling my way and didn't want to damage any of the interior. When I find a "Baule" stamped lever, it'll only take about 15 mins to replace it

The early injected boxers had the same green sheathing over the wire harness for the warm up regulators and sensors then switched to black. Seems the 400i follows this pattern but the year range is shifted back. 82 and 83 boxer was green in most cases and black in 84. In this case the 79 is green and my 81 400i harness is black.

    Good day Patrick,

If that is the case then you have an early 400i. Looking at the early owner's manual it would seem that they are very similar or the same as the 365s... Also looking at the diagram the 400i also has a central small 2-fuse block apparently for (Anti Frost Vale for A/C and Start Valve).

Also... I will be making an upgrade 365 fuse block at some point... however, probably not until early 2017... If the 365 blocks are the same size as yours (early 400i... and mostly likely 400GT) then they may be an option for you. That being said, you still need to sort out the issue with yours, as my schedule tends to be somewhat volatile...

    Cheers,

    Sam

    Thanks Sam,

I note these are 10 per side, plus 2 in the middle. The 308 are 9 a side, and the aftermarket blade fuse boxes are 10 a side, so might be an easier job for me. Depending upon where the circuits are bridged, I may be able to reuse the ones I made for the 308.

    BTW Sam,

Fuse boxes just arrived - beautiful! The workmanship is so far above OEM, it's ridiculous!

I've decided not to use them, just stick them in a glass case and stare at them.

Those last two fuses (x&y) are for dual A/c, and automatic transmission, respectively. I hope this helps you. Jq.

I think one of them is "Start Valve", I can't remember what the other one said - I'll have a look tonight.
Just re-read Sam's post - I don't know what an antifrost valve is, but it's nice to know I've got one!

I forgot to mention that when I broke down, a bloke came up and offered to give me a push to clear the intersection. I had turned off the motor, so couldn't open the window, so I went to open the door - and the door latch failed. I had to turn on the ignition, wind down the window, and open the door from the outside. Anyway, pulled the door cards off and noted the tube nut adjuster had come off the threaded rod of the linkage - 2 minute fix.

I also pawed over the manual and answered my previous question - the radiator/overflow caps were reversed. Probably didn't make a lot of difference, but annoying that someone could leave it like that.

The car came with some dodgy, twisted, aftermarket keys, which don't fit, except for the ignition, so I need to take the locks out to get correct keys made - anyone had experience here?

In the meantime, I'm going to give the interior a good drink of leather dressing (bought a heap of Oakwood stuff from Supercheap - on special!).

Locksmiths can make keys to suit without having to take the locks out mate.

Well, maybe they can't do it with old Italian cars, but back in the day we used to have keys made for doors and ignitions all the time.

Before you get too excited, call a few local Locksmiths and see what they reckon.

    Thanks mate,

I have since received a spare key in the mail from the PO which fits the door locks (wrong shaped blank, but I can get those). I then discovered that the driver's door lock isn't connected to anything - another job. No key at all for the glove box and boot lever lock. I'll get them all refurbished when I get the keys done.

I was too distracted by the wiring, anyway - lots of dodgy looking repairs/bypasses, with solder and tape everywhere, melted bits on the relay board, and confusing substituted wires, all in a bird's nest. This is going to take longer than I planned.

    Relay board.

The main one, with the 18 relays, has a few melted spots. It has been repaired, but I thought I'd see if anyone out there has one lying around. I know it's all hidden away, but just knowing it's there in that state gives me a rash, and as I'm embarking on sorting out the wiring, I thought I'd start there.

BTW, to sweeten the deal, I should let you know that I'm willing to pay bugger all for it. :)

    Thanks

So the last few days I cleaned the leather - not too much grime came off on the cloth, which means either the cleaner is crap, or the leather is clean - a first for this car, if it means some maintenance has been done. I saw a spot of what I thought was adhesive residue, and when I applied a bit of metho, the dye started coming off, so I think there's been a spray on leather treatment in the past.

I attacked the dodgy fan wiring. Some dodgy (they're all dodgy) auto electrician has bypassed everything and wired the two front fans straight from the battery - fine, except the switch voltage was sourced from the same battery feed, and not ign, so the bloody fans stay on when the car's turned off. They also failed to wire in the puller fan, which was probably why it was overheating in traffic. Also, by circumventing the OEM circuits, the RHS fan doesn't cut in when the AC is turned on.

    Lots more to do...
