I just received my new JE pistons and pins and found that the package is 255 grams lighter per piston than stock, thats nine ounces each. This will require removing weight from the crank. My engine builder told me that now is the time to knife edge the counter weights for better windage because he will have to drill out weight when he balances. Getting rid of extra weight will make for much faster revs. We decided to go 10.6 to 1 compression ratio and the pistons look great. Anyone interested can contact him for any of your piston needs at [email protected] He is definitely your go to guy

You only need to rebalance when you INCREASE weight. No need to do so when you decrease it.
In case you do rebalance you need to know that Dino cranks need to be balanced with conrods connected.

Stratos, I thought you Swiss were precision. When balancing is done it requires that the piston ,pin, rod, rod bearings and ring package are weighed and then bob weights mimmicking that weight are assembled on the crank for the spin. Some really good balancers will even put in an oil allowance. If you remove weight from the piston rod package you definitely have to rebalance and remove weight from the crank counterweights to compensate. Please let me know if there are other dynamics involved (i.e.) flat crank or other factors. Thank you in advance. Gary

Hello Gary, my Name is JR, I'm too working on a beautiful Dino 246, I'm in the middle of deciding how I should go about getting pistons, I'm very much interested in the JE units, but so far the only place I can get em is through an outlet called Superformance in the UK. They sell pistons but for a pretty steep price and are also JE made. My question to you is, do you have a part number or job number for the piston set? it is usually stamped on the side of the box. If I have this number I can order staright from JE. My other option is to send JE one of my pistons and have them cut me some new ones. Since you are the only one person on the forum that has access to this numbers, I would truly appreciate if you can help me. Thanks for your time, best regards. JR Marchand

Hello , I'm also working on a Dino rebuild involving new pistons. I'm trying to get the part number for the JE piston set for a 246 GT. This way I can call JE direct and get a better deal, plus it would cut down on the hassle of buying overseas at a higher rate. If someone can help me, it would be great. thanks in advance JR

Stratos, The Dino I find out is externally balanced which means yes indeed you don't remove from the crank but do your adjusting on the harmonic balancer and or the flywheel. We found this out getting ready to balance. Thanks for inspiring the thought process.

I placed my order with Mark, so thanks very much. I'll let you know how things go, the block is getting some work, plus I might convince my customer of sending the camshafts out to Webcam to get a sportier profile. This is my first italian motor rebuild, having worked on air-cooled Porsche for some time, I have to say, that I'm lucky getting to work on such a cool car. The toughest thing is getting parts, which by the way, I need to get all the gaskets etc... we'll see. thanks again. JRM

    10.6 to 1 ?

Isn't the standard factory Dino 10 to 1, so you've made the piston more oversquare?

syncro, the stock compression ratio is 9 to 1. To make an engine "over square" requires that the bore is bigger than the stroke, that is already the case with the stock Dino.

JRmarchand, Your very welcome. You will so appreciate these little pieces of art. Light, strong and so race. I have assembled my short block and am preparing my heads, five angle job, all stainless valves, warmed over ports. I have taken pictures and the thought of posting them after completion may be possible if there's interest. Good luck on your project! We would like to hear and see your progress.
The gasket set can be had at Lyle Tanner Ent.- Rancho Cordova CA 95742 Tel: 916-638-0444 Expect to pay around $800 dollars. The head gasket is Elring, which is supposed to be the good one. Good wrenching!

    Best regards Gary

I would check T.Rutlands or Dennis McCann on the gasket sets or just the head gaskets (Elring). $800 sounds a crazy price for Dino gasket sets.

racerboy9, ya! isn't it nuts? These old boy's cost so much to keep going, but they are so very cool and appreciated. Unlike a new F-car, I get so many thumbs up from old and young alike its worth the price of admission. Sometimes I don't always get the cheapest price, just being happy I can get the parts at all. One fond Dino owner!
