Hey Guys, I need some help planning a 5 day trip to aspen..... And guidance would be much appreciated. David
I'm going the first week of March, my girlfriends family rented a condo. I've never been to Aspen before, but a few times to Vail. I heard it's incredible.
When are you planning to come? Do you want ski in ski out? A condo or hotel? Quiet or jumpin? How many adults, kids, etc. Do you need parking?
www.stayaspensnowmass.com Best place to stay if money is no object: The Little Nell. Ski in/ski out. Grat location and all the amenities including covered parking. Best Condos: Chateau Eau Claire/Chateau Roaring Fork. Across the street from each other. Right on the Roaring Fork River. Shuttle picks up at the condo and then it's about 4 blocks to the gondola and six blocks to the Ruby Park Bus Station downtown. Favorite restaurant: Montanya (at Little Nell) Best wine list in town IMVHO. Expensive. Wife's favorite: Szygy The sooner you make reservations the better. Otherwise if you wait until the day of you may be eating at 6 or 9 PM. Best breakfast: Weinerstube (local's place). Best ribs: The Hickory House on Main street coming into town. They deliver. Best sushi: Taka Sushi then Kenichi. Best nightclub: Belly Up (go on-line and get tickets for name acts) Best sports bar tie: J Bar at the Jeome Hotel (big screen) or Bentley's at the Wheeler Opera House) Best place to ski for Experts: Aspen Mountain (locals call it Ajax Mountain) Best Place to ski for beginners: Buttermilk Best Place to ski for families and intermediates: Snowmass Best Place to ski for locals: Aspen Highlands Note: go to Ruby Park bus station and take free shuttle to the ski area of your choice.
No snow where I am which is at our Lake house in Illinois. 60s today and 71F tomorrow. Understand it has been warm in Aspen and there is no snow. I usually don't start skiing until after the first of the year and all the amateurs leave after New Year's anyway. Then I only ski on sunny days with good conditions.
BTW, Vail is scheduled to open on the 21st. As I'm not there currently, I have to rely on a few pictures. It looked encouraging about 2 weeks ago, but I'm sure rock skis will be required. Unfortunately, the vail.snow.com web cams aren't operational, yet. CW
Vail opens tomorrow on manufactured snow at the bottom and snow that fell 3 weeks ago on top. Conditions are not great and I'd wait 2 weeks before coming out. However, it's great biking weather and no crowds.
Wait until after the new year. Snow at the moment is not good. i.e. man made, stale, and not very much of it. -F
Agree with most on the list, prefer Cache Cache to Montagna and Matsuhisa to Kenichi (draw with Taka Sushi) though. Highlands has terrific skiing but on a cold day prefer Ajax definitely(nothing beats the new gondolas on a freezing day). Staying at Nell ,Christmas through first week of January....(I know,it's a bad time to be in Aspen but that's the only time available for my kids )
I know in Vail yesterday there wasn't that much at all I will know for sure tomorrow if Aspen has anything, but I wouldn't have big hopes.
These guys are right on with the suggestions, but don't forget to bring the most important thing--gondola car loads of money!
It was snowing alittle yesterday, but not alot. It has been getting colder around though, so I would wait awhile.
There are many inexpensive ways to do things in Aspen. We like to eat at the bar menu, especially at Cache Cache. For dessert get samores by the fire in the lounge at St Regis for 4 people about $10...delicious. Don't forget the free physics lectures at the Wheeler. Tuesdays last year.

Yeah it looked nice, too! Finally, actually snow on the ground and with the continuing temperatures it looks like it will stick around for awhile.
Snowed all night and still dumping champaign powder (the best). they are reporting 16" on Ajax. Everybody is skiing today. Schools are closed. businesses are letting employees take off to ski. http://www.coloradoski.com/SnowReport/ Women's world Cup downhill has been delayed until Saturday. Too much snow. If like fast women, we got em. (90+ mph) Life is good.
