Hey guys I just bought my first Modena...2000.. f$#&... the car is sexy..but here's the problem. It has 16k on it and I'm getting a f1 transmission failure code as of 10 mins ago. Car will not start. I noticed that it wanted to shut of this morning as I was pulling into starbucks but didn't completely turn off. Just wondering if anyone has any experience with this or may know what it is. I'd rather solve the issue with a private mechanic or on my own rather than getting hosed on Monday morning from the dealer.

    Thanks guys.

    Sonny

p.s- this hott red head is sittting with my parents now cause my "ferrari" is broken

Where are you located? I'd get to someone with an SD2 and see what's going on.

Better get ready to grab your ankles and take it like a man.

I hope it works out (you might get lucky) but it'll be hard to troubleshoot without the dealer's diagnostic scanner.

There are several possibilities for your trouble. I'd post in the Canada section to find a shop with a SD2 to find out what's wrong.

Sorry for your troubles.....hope it is nothing serious.....could be many things......most probably electrical. Like Bill said, take it to the dealer and hook it up to the SD3 computer......it will tell you everything.

More Important.........Why is this hot red head sitting with your parents and not with you?

    And btw., welcome to F-Chat.

My understanding from talking with my mechanic, there are several sensors through out the F1 system that can go out and cause the F1 to shutdown. Apperantly can be somewhat of a nightmare to track. The worst part is the SD2 or 3 might not show the code at all!!!
Bottom line, get the car to a professional!! If you are worried about being hosed, you bought the wrong car!

    Good luck!

Maybe it is simply low on F1 fluid.

My 360 F1 had 6000 miles when I got it. The transmission light came on and it did not crank just days after I got it. The F1 fluid level was below minimum in the bottle next to the right rear fender. I added fluid and tried to start it. The F1 light was no longer on, but the starter made a rapid dat dat dat dat noise which meant that the battery was low and could not engage the starter. After charging the battery and cycling the gears or cycling the trunk power switch (I forgot the exact sequence) the car started!

What symptoms do you get when you say "will not start"? Do the dash lights all look
OK except for the F1 fault? Does the starter try to crank the engine?

As suggested earlier, check the F1 fluid level. Then try a simple test:
With the key on, but not powering the starter, If the car is
in 1st gear, can you drop it into N? Or vice versa, if it is in N, can you shift it up to 1?
If it doesn't shift, then I would suspect the F1 pump or relay though it could be any of
serveral items. The F1 pump and/or relay is a common failure (multiple references in the
archives) and the replacement pump is the bigger one from the CS. Been
there, done that :-( Incidently, don't forget to check the simple stuff, like the
fuse for the F1 pump ... sorry, I don't remember where that is.

The car got towed to my dealer, Weissach Auto, who then sent it to Ferrari Masserati of Vancouver
They are so swamped, & said cant even look at it till Oct.20....i basically told them to....%%^& & at least hook it up.
Upon doing that, the errors that came up were:
1-gearshift switch lock, reverse gear switch block pump relay
    2=short c. to ground
    3-engine revolutions from can.
    4- engine revol. no signal.

So thats it.....however the tech, got the car out of 2nd where it was stuck , got the light off, & said is ok to drive for now....could it die again???? i brought it home
on friday, & to be honest was driving perfect in all gears & reverse......
am not to comfortable obviosuly driving it still....maybe the codes were there when i bought in July? or not....

Lou, & the rest any idea??seriousness as the tech said very very little detail, just wanted my car off the lot.......hopefully i can find a private tech in the area that can look at it cause dont want to wait till Oct. 20

    Thanks alot guys !

I would start by checking the F1 fluid.

Interesting that the tech said it was ok to drive 'for now'. Implies there is a problem that he hasn't really
fixed yet. Not sure what to make of it as I would assume there is still a chance for the problem to
recur and leave you stuck. Any chance he bypassed a sensor to avoid a repeat issue?

Problem & errors still showing on thier computer. Didnt mention anything re; bypassing the sensor, he even said "we didnt have time to do anything, including wash it"
so, unless it was just some chance thing , or just stalled, it could very well happen again
thats why not drinving it , even though it felt fine, until i get a tech to look at it.
Still lokking for a private tech in town that could.

Any idea on the best oil/ f1 trany fluid to get?? woudnt hurt to top those up .

Any idea on those errors, anyone dealt with any of those before, price$$ degree. etc/

The Ferrari-recommended Shell F1 fluid is a Dextron-III ATF compatible.
