Hi all; I have been approached by a friend to repaint his 400i. I used to do quite a few high end resprays, but have not done one for a few years(I'm dating myself here, but I started buying Glasurit when you had to buy it from the BMW dealers parts department) I was always happy, not only with the way it looked leaving the booth, but the way it looked years later, so I would like to use that brand if possible. Anyway, the local paint stores that handle it(Finishmaster), do not have a clue. either about what products are available in California vs elsewhere, or the properties of any of the products. They can give no technical advice whatsoever.Same with Glasurits website. Why would they make 4 or 5 different primer/fillers if they're all 'good' This will be a bare metal-cost or time no object-show quality job...I hope. Anyone help me out? You can e-mail me directly ar [email protected] Thanks!

My experience with repainting my cars is that very few if any shops shoot Glasurit nowdays, its difficult to shoot and very expensive, Glasurit has a domestic brand Ditzler that almost as good and many shops use it.

As long as you are using a high quality paint it should come out well, the old single stage Glasurit was the best and my Boxer was repainted with it when taken down to bare metal but todays technology of 2 stage basecoat clear coat gives a better finish thats easier to spot repair and looks glossier, not to mention has flex additives i the clear which makes it more durable and chip resistant, I would seriously look at the benifits of a 2 stage quality paint such as Ditzler or Spies Hecker which was used on my Boxer and it came out fantastic.

If the 400 was finished with a nonmetallic color, then it was shot with a single stage finish.
If I were going to show the car, I would want the paint job to look as close to original as possible to avoid a point deduction.

I still have a few cans of original Glidden Salchi from that era,
but when I paint now I use PPG.

Very few shops use single stage anymore because its easier to get a nicer finish with 2 stage, no show judge will be able to tell if it were painted with 2 stage or single if the single has a nice gloss to it, single eventually oxidizes and gets dull if it's not kept up vs the base-clear method and its easy to tell then.

Paint is one thing I would not try an be original about, the 70s Ferraris used laquer if you want to be a stickler about it, not Glasurit single stage and it will last maybe 2 years before its starts looking bad and will eventually craze,

You can get a beautiful glossy & tough single stage finish if you go with one of the high-end urethane based paints like Dupont's ChromaOne. It doesn't oxidize any quicker than the clearcoat on a 2-stage would. Has a big advantage in that even fairly deep scratches can be compounded out & the gloss restored. Also can be spot touched-up invisibly.

It's available in both single & two-stage. PPG, Ditzler, etc should have high end equivalents.

I've been using it on my 308 for several years now. The color seems to be holding up very well, repainted my spoiler last spring & it exactly matched a rear quarter I repainted a few years ago.
