I'm looking into switching insurance companies and am told I need appraisals due to the rare/vintage nature of my cars. Does anyone in the GTA have any positive referrals? I did a very brief search but the only vintage appraisers I found specialized in muscle cars. My cars are all European (listed below if it helps). I'd rather have someone that knows a little about these cars, if possible.

    Thanks,

Silver Wheel Plan has been bought by Hagerty and no longer require appraisals.

Hey there.. Maurice Brahmall is good and I have used him but getting a bit pricy.

I found a fellow in London who will come to Toronto on appointment and his price is very very good. He did my Diablo and it was half the price of many others quotes.

Best of all the appraisal is top notch in terms of what you get (they are all mostly the same anyway) and he's very co-operative works with you.

Thank you everyone for the replies. I will look into both Tom and Maurice but also into Silver Wheels. That name keeps popping up. The Pcar is my DD so it's already insured but I'd like to have the other two ready to go for May 1. Hopefully I can find some savings over last year.

My insurance company (State Farm) want an appraisal. They don't want to accept the one I got from Rock. They have asked me to use a specific appraiser, who I have never heard of.

What are other people doing these days?

Appraisers in Ontario need to be registered and display their registration numbers on their appraisals. Anyone can make an appraisal but it is only the registered ones that hold any water when things go pear shaped. I have heard of non professional appraisals being rejected at the time of claim so State Farm was right to request the use of an appraiser but I do not believe they can specify which one. This is much like the insurance companies cannot force you to use a specific collision shop so be sure to specify the registered appraiser you want to use. I have always used Maurice Bramhall and he is great. You pay half for the appraisal and half for his stories as he is always filled of tales for his colorful life spent around automobiles.

I just pulled my files and the gent who did the appraisal on my Etype in October is Allan Lewis . Allen is the owner of Vintage Car Connection Profesional Appraisers . Cell(416 319 3321) He lives in Singhampton Ontario ( a bit north of GTA) Allen is a member of The Professional Assc. of Vehicle Appraisers and has an assigned appraiser number listed with Mnistry of Finance . All this is a self governing independant body but widely recognized in the Canadian court system . This could prove very important if a claim goes south after an accident . For exmaple you paid and have told your friends you have a 5 million dollar GT40 and really its a continuation thats worth 125k.
Allen or any other a credited appraiser will only value your car based on what he could actually defend in court .
Next step is to take this appraisal to the insurer who will then give you first right of refusal should you write off your 3 mil GT40 thats only worth 125k then at least you could buy back the wreck for say 25k then part it out $$$$$$ so someone else could claim it was historically significant years later LOL.
But seriously folks....... Silver Wheels Plan (now owned By Haggerty BTW) will NOT allow this first right of refusal and also look out for getting back the taxes once you settle as well . After hearing this and also hearing a higher appraisal number with a lower rate per year I have since switched to Zehrs Ins. ( they are also Canadian !!)

    juz sayin

Thanks for the answers. I think I'll go the appraiser route. From what I can tell, State Farm's "Limited use antique/classic" is about half the cost of the Silver Wheels estimate on the home page.

I haven't gone through the details of each policy to see how they differ. I've been with State Farm a long time. When I've had to make claims (a collector car rear ended, a tenant burning down my coach house), they were easy to work with.

My last two appraisals from Rock were more in depth than Maurice for my coverage, and it was the same price for my appraisal from Rock as Maurice , actually Rocks pics where true pictures of the car that I submitted, and not photocopied pictures. Was much easier for me to have Rock do it as my cars were there for service at the time. Insurance companies need a full out appraisal.
Maurice's benefit is he comes to your house for the appraisal. Btw, I'm also with silver wheels, awesome outfit !
Are you sure you did a full on appraisal at Rocks ?
