According to Kyle himself at least. He made claims that he could get close to Max in F1, but in other cars he would be better. Also claiming Max wouldn't be able to succeed in Nascar at the level Kyle has.

Former Nascar champion, Kevin Harvick supports these theories and also believes Kyle is better than Max.

    Thoughts?

I think it's a load of rubbish, but not simply because I think F1 drivers are better than Nascar drivers. That's very obtuse thinking.

I think Max is proving to be a generational talent, perhaps the greatest F1 driver of all time (not trying to start an argument). His destruction of teammates in the last 5 years is unparalleled, not to mention the records he has set. So Max's capabilities in F1 are undeniable.

Max is a well known Sim Racing super star. One of the best in the world. Even by his own words, he finds sim racing more challenging than F1. He can be quoted that he has always been naturally quick in real life, where as he needs to put more work in to be quick in the Sim Racing world. Some don't believe sim racing skills and real life skills correlate, but it surely does. Plus it emphasizes the passion Max has for motor racing. He is on a completely different level than any other pro racing driver. Also in a recent GT3 test, Max apparently was stunningly quick almost immediately. So his claims to being naturally quick are supported with real experiences. I believe Max could drive virtually any 4 wheel car fast around a road course.

Kyle Larson is a 1x Nascar Champion. 27 wins in 354 races over 12 years in the Cup series. So even though the Nascar boys like to hype him up as this unbelievable driver, he can't even be considered the best Nascar driver. He has 5 Nascar road course victories, undoubtedly one of the best road racers in Nascar, but again not the best. I would have to give that honor to Shane Van Gisbergen. Of course Kyle has won the 24 hr of Daytona as part of a stacked team, is a very solid dirt racer, and even did reasonably well at the 2024 Indy 500 (finished 18th).

I admit I don't really watch Nascar anymore, and I do understand the oval skill set is different than the road course skill set. It is unfair to discredit a driver that is great in a series that primarily runs around ovals. Oval racing is not easy. We have seen former F1 drivers try Nascar with little success. Montoya did several full seasons and was never a championship contender. He was good at the road courses but was never dominant. Kimi Raikonen tried the truck series ovals and was never in condition for victory. He has ran some road courses and was never challenging for poles or wins. Jenson Button has looked pretty mediocre in his Nascar drives.

When I stand back, I don't see Kyle as this one of a kind driver based on his accomplishments. Where as Max is. I actually think some of the best driving talent, especially in heavier cars comes from the Australian Supercar series. SVG is incredible. We saw Marcus Ambrose do well in Nascar. Scott McLaughlin is a 6 time winner in Indy car where as former F1 driver Grosjean seems to be allergic to winning. Then we have to remember someone like Fernando Alonso. 2x F1 champ goes to WEC and wins the championship and 24 LeMans, mind you there was no competition against Toyota. He also won the 24 hr of Daytona and even lead the Indy 500. I would bet my money on Alonso beating Kyle Larson, and I think Max is even better than Alonso.

I saw this early today and figured heads would explode here. Just like GOAT discussions in any sport, the comparisons are useless unless the competitors worked in the same conditions at the same time using the same equipment. Babe Ruth hit more home runs one year than the rest of the major league players put together. Cy Young may have been the best pitcher of all time, but could he dominate like Sandy Koufax (the best pitcher I ever saw). I did see Pele’ once, and felt I was seeing a generational talent if not the best ever. Same thing seeing Roberto Clemente, who died in a plane crash before his talent could mature.

I know heads will explode again, but it would be great fun (and make a boatload in a pay per view) for Larson and Verstappen to cross train and do two head-to-head matchups, one in a NASCAR car and one in F1. Larson could spin out and crash (like Stroll hahahaha) on the first turn. Max might really enjoy being able to legally crash into other cars to move them out of the way. Larson does seem to have the talent to get into almost any car and excel pretty quickly, Verstappen (IMHO only) is a generational talent who has that mix of raw skill and moxy. For purists, no need to flame me. I love F1 and also enjoy NASCAR. Larson is best in class on road courses, so his style might fit better than some other stock car guys and make a one-off more interesting.

Oh, best driver ever (best across series, car types and success in those differing cars and races)- Mario Andretti (YMMV) - F1 World Champion, Indy 500 winner, season champion for Indy cars, won the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, replaced Niki Lauda at Ferrari, then went back to Indy cars and continued to win. He also won the 12 Hours of Sebring 3 times and competed in Le Mans for Porsche and others several times. He was 60 at his last Le Mans, pretty good for an old guy.

We can parse Max and Kyle Larson all day, but Mario actually competed and won in all of those cars and more, and received a Commendatore from Italy in 2006, evidence that Ferrari and others considered him to be pretty good. Today, he even is the official ambassador for COTA promoting support for F1...

It actually could be done. If the hype gets big enough, they could put on a show much like when JPM and Jeff Gordon did a seat swap, as did Lewis Hamilton and Tony Stewart. Jimmy Johnson and Alonso did as well. This could be done, but in a much more competitive manner. They could also do a sort of Race of Champions deal where they race the same exact car.

Would the drivers be up for it? Who knows. But it'd be entertaining to see.

Liberty would be up for it, I think, ratings galore. Re Larson being a geezer, not sure 32 qualifies. He’s actually an all around pretty nice guy (too nice, he needs to put another driver who torments him into the wall a time or two). He said that he thinks he’s a better all around driver than Max, and that he’d have a better chance in FI that Max in NASCAR to win a race.

Evidence is only gained from experimentation, and I’m betting that every eyeball here would be glued to the set if they did a one-off trading places (Max will be far enough ahead later in the season and Kyle will be far enough ahead in the playoff points that they could lol).

Alternately, the sims are so good, it wouldn’t be hard at all to arrange a home-and-home race against one another, they’re both committed virtual drivers & like all top tier athletes, rabid competitors. They could donate the proceeds to charity and perhaps kick off similar dues also donating for the good. I’d be surprised if they and others like them haven’t already done these things privately.

This hot stove stuff, thogh, is pretty much good for for what we’re doing here, disagreeing over meaningless things.

I also thought a Sim Race would be an easy way to compare, even if it wouldn't satisfy most of the critics. Larson's comment has sparked an opportunity to do a really fun event that, like you said, would have millions of eyes glued to. There are still warm climates where you can race in the off the season, so it is very much possible to organize. Red Bull is actually the best F1 team to be part of this since they like to do fun experiments with their F1 cars already. Hendrick did LeMans so that is encouraging too.

If he were even close to as fast as Max in an F1 car, he'd be racing in F1, making 2-5x his NASCAR salary.

What's the downside? No stage racing. No tire strategy. No silly 'maybe this is the last lap' BS. You know....what racing used to be.

Larson's assertion is absurd--a seamless transition from Jack-in-the-Box NASCAR stockers to the most sophisticated racecars on the planet? F1 uses complex technologies that he has never used and G forces that he has never experienced in competition. He would be driving against young, hungry competitors who have been racing at this level since their early teens. No spotters in F1, you have a race engineer in your ear. From Boogity boogity boogity to Box box box.

Kyle would be closer to Max in F1 than Max would be to Kyle in nascar - or ANY OTHER type of car.

You could have said the same about Kyle Busch five years ago.

You put Max in a 1979-80 Ferrari and Gilles would blow his doors off.
And let's discuss having Max go up against Senna in 1988-89-90, it would be laughable.
Same with going up against someone like a Mansell, Hunt, Jones, Berger...

We could talk forever about taking today's drivers and plunking them down in prior seasons'
cars/lineups and how bad they would do vs. take drivers from an era years ago and stick them
in today's all-computer all-pushbutton cars and how they would do.

I can already see it - Max in a 1963 Cooper, 1966 Lotus, 76 Mclaren, 82 Ferrari and so on,
it would be laughable. 'What's this third pedal? what's this lever on the right side?', LOL

I'm not saying Max is bad - he's not bad, but to put him in a car that basically doesn't drive itself would be funny to see.
The ONLY guy that might have a chance is Alonzo.
