So with the 296 I’ve been having brake squeaking noise while driving WITHOUT touching the brake pedal, I had the same issue with my 812 so I didn’t think much of it and thought Ferraris are just like that, but since I dropped the car at the service shop for an alignment issue I told them to check it just in case.

A few days later they report back that my front left pads and rotors have burn markings on them and are giving off a burning scent. Furthermore, they’re essentially telling me this is wear and tear/driver error and wouldn’t be covered by warranty. This is still only the dealers words and I’ve asked for this to be reported to the factory on Monday.

Now I admit I’m an aggressive driver and I’ve been pushing the car, but I haven’t been to any track days and what I do on the street is nowhere near the abuse the brakes would endure on a track.

Secondly, even if I took the car to the track this SHOULD NOT happen. I had a 991.2 GT3 and 720S before and I probably did 300 laps on track (Losail) in each. All of that in addition to all the street driving and this kind of thing never happened before. I only replaced the GT3’s pads once and the 720 twice, never had issues with the rotors.

Thirdly, the noise issue had been there for a while, before the first 1000km when the car was still in the break in period and I wasn’t pushing it hard. As I said I wasn’t very concerned with it as I thought it was normal for Ferrari’s.

Here are the pics the dealer sent me:

Not user if problem only on left front. More like faulty caliper piston drag from day 1 and serious if only 2000KM on the clock.

I agree with fatbillybob about the faulty caliper piston drag. However, curious if you engine brake much?

Of course it’s not normal on 1 side why haven’t I thought of that. Now I’m even more mad at the dealer for trying to put the blame on me.

Yes always, whenever I’m doing some spirited driving the car is in manual and I’m shifting constantly.

I'm not a pro mechanic but fixed my own ferraris and other cars and severely abuse brakes club racing. Pad and rotor destruction is pretty even left and right if everything working right.

Knowing Ferrari warranty, especially Ferrari North Europe, they are not very good at paying out on warranty. I have had countless “good will” claims refused. You need to write to Ferrari customer services yourself also. I fear they will come back with “driver error”. It’s over £10000 for a new set fitted.

How long have you had the car? I can see it’s only 2175km.

A little over a month and a half.

I’m not gonna jump the gun, this is all dealer talk so far and no word from Ferrari yet. I hope it goes smoothly in the next few days because this is a pill I’m not willing to swallow.

I don’t blame you. Which country are you in? Did you take it back to the supplying dealer ?

Update: I double checked and it turns out it’s both front left and right rotors, not just one side.

In addition, what the dealer claimed to be referring to when they said it’s not covered under warranty was a simple rotor and pad cleaning job. I asked a few times to be absolutely certain but they assured me that there’s no mechanical damage and that the braking performance is not affected.

They suggested cleaning the brakes only as a solution for the noise. I’m not 100% buying this but I decided to go ahead with the cleaning and get the car back instead of reporting to the factory.

Replace the pads, as they could be defective. JMHO

What % of the pads are left? Is the wear relatively even between inner and outer, and right and left?

I track the 458 quite extensively and could never get my brakepads to last long, even Pagid racing, with the ceramic rotors.

So I switched to Girodisc rotors and pads last much longer, and braking, while different, is still acceptable.

I’m sure you are aware of this but once pads start to wear, it accelerates their wear rate. Do they offer them aftermarket?

Did you break in the pads at all when first receiving the car? Rep from Acura with the new NSX was pretty adamant about breaking in the carbon pads on any car...not just Acura? I've never had the carbon ceramic brakes so just wondering if the car's manual states anything about breaking the pads in? Cheers
