    Good filter or cool air?

My car came to me with the K&N filters. The stock air box also came in the trunk.

    Pro K&N
    - looks good!
    - sounds good
    - good filter

    Pro Stock
    - stock look
    - cold air

My car does seem to run the best when engine temps are cool. Runs the worst when it is totally heat soaked and in traffic. I thought that may be just carb tuning...

I am thinking of going back to stock air box at least for a test or two....

I just thought I would ask your opinion.

    Thanks! :)

    Nice and clean!

As you noticed, heat soak and sitting without air movement will effect the engines ability to produce power, once at speed that tends to work itself out as air flow is increased into the engine bay. split the difference and fabricate ducting to direct air towards the filters so that at speed there is more fresh air available. unfortunately the bigger problem is the air flow over the back of the 308, large low pressure zone at speed right above the engine. helps in drawing out the hot exhaust air but also makes it a bit harder for the engine to draw in air in that area.

Scott, how about an intercooler, would that help cool the air going in?

K&N - it depends what you want from a filter, before classing it as a good filter. In terms of actually filtering, removing dust and particulates from the air ingested by your engine - they're worse than paper filters. The advantage of K&N filters is that they flow more air than an equivalent paper filter; and when they get dirty they flow more air than a dirty paper filter. But if you read their advertising material with a critical eye, you'll notice that they never actually claim to filter better than other filters... because they don't. I used K&N air filters on a couple of cars before reading some independent tests, now I avoid K&N and stick with pleated paper filters.

A simple air temp intake solution, though probably not acceptable to the owner.

    Thanks :)

I think we still have some hot days in front of us here in SoCal, so I think I will goof around with a fan idea if I can do it without it looking too kludgy. If I get anywhere I will post the results in a new thread. :)

    Matt,

    Impressive story.

You say Scott and Nick have reengineered the pulleys to be compatible with modern belts that have 90K service intervals, and are fully adjustable to allow for better tuning. Is the lifetime dependent on the type of belts which used or the pulleys? What kind of belts do you use they last for 90K?

If the appraisal does not meet your expectations will you be disappointed? I hope not because what you have created cannot be valued in dollars and cents. How much is the unconditional love of a beautiful woman worth? If this was my car (I wish) the only value I would reveal is the love in creating it. Those of us that love Ferrari will understand. Yes; I'm jealous!

I've had very good experiences with Church's dyno service in Wilmington. I have done many, many dyno pulls at their facility. They use Dynapack hub dynos.

    By the way, FANTASTIC build!

Scott can go into more details as to why, but my understanding is that the original design of the pulleys/belts that utilizes the angular 90-degree teeth is prone to premature wear, whereas modern belt designs that aren't angular but rather curved do not have similar weaknesses and thus have extended service intervals.

Thank you so much for your words! You are correct - I won't be disappointed. I love this car and all that went into it. The quality of build is phenomenal, and understanding all that made it a reality - knowing the intimate details - is what really makes it fun. That said, I hope the appraiser recognizes this. But we'll see.

(Btw, given my current workload, I haven't had time to reschedule the appraisal and thus, it has yet to be completed.)

I enjoyed this thread and was curious if the dyno run was made. Maybe I missed it from another post a while back. Anyway, if you have some charts I would love to see how it compares with the others I have compiled. Thanks!

No, you didn't miss it, and I really appreciate you following up!

So here's the story: finding a GOOD dyno facility in southern California that would allow us to come in and use their dyno for the day turned out to be a nightmare.

At the same time, there were a couple of odds and ends that I wanted to perfect on the car - not mandatory, but optional. For example: euro style bumpers and grille, flex-fuel E85 capabilities, etc.

So after pow-wowing with Nick and Scott, we decided to ship the car back to Nick's place. Given my work level and travels of the past several months, I wouldn't have had time to drive the car anyways, so it was great to let them go at it for a while and really fine tune the edges.

That said, your timing is perfect. In a couple of weeks (hopefully!), I'll finally have a rest in my schedule to allow travel to Nick's place to road test the car then ship it back home to L.A. By that point, we'll have the dyno, updated photos, etc. to share.

Yep, I think the dyno facilities probably introduce so much variance into the data that it makes the comparison game pointless. But if you find a good shop and you do run the test I would love to see the results. That extra liter should make for a good pull. :)

Did you ever contact Church? Their number is (310)518-4966. They have rented out their dyno for hours at a time. I reserved it a fews years back, when we had a dyno day, for 4 hours. I'm sure they will rent it for how ever long you need. Just call and make a reservation.

Wow, thanks for the suggestion! I hadn't contacted them. We don't need a dyno now, given the excellent one at Nick's facility. But if I ever need one down here in L.A., I'll be sure to call them.

Like everyone says, absolutely amazing! At nearly double the original horsepower, what's the effect on the rest of the system...? I really like the very sensible revision of the original, weak timing belt setup. Now if someone could come up with a practical internal duplex chain-drive conversion...

Cheers, Rich (& many thanks for posting this, power/torque curves included!)...

No need to go to an internal duplex chain-drive conversion when my new service interval is 90k miles :)

Hi Matt, that's one set up you have. I have read up on Nick Forza's web-site, all the things they can do to the 308's for sometime now. And now knowing that a fellow Californian has done all the modes I would like to do someday, I'm very interested in seeing if there are any issues regarding the CA smog / visual tests. Please keep us posted. Your exhaust system looks really nice as well, cats removed or placed elsewhere?

Thanks for the compliment on the exhaust! And I agree - Scott and Nick did an amazing job on the exhaust. It's beautiful, and the car can actually breathe now!

Interestingly, the car still has cats (Hyperflow). Scott said that with the advanced tuning ability the new fuel/ignition systems have, I could be OK here in California without cats. But I insisted on keeping them, for I figured that with the HP I'll be dealing with in this new build, sacrificing a couple HP for less CO was fine.

Please keep us in the loop when you go in for your next smog. Smog guys don't see many 308's today, so i suspect passing the visual should not be a problem. They won't have a clue the engine being non-stock, bored out and all. Will come down to the smog test. May I asked what the all in cost was. The savings in the long run is tremendous and worth the investment. Not to mention the gain in HP. As for the weight of the U.S. bumpers, should be a mute issue with with all those horses behind you back.

Will do. Given that the engine layout is going to look virtually stock and that the emissions profile will actually be cleaner than that of a stock car, I'm not foreseeing any problems.

Sorry to hear you have to sell her. I'm fighting to hold on to my resto/mod as well as health issues are interfering with my full enjoyment. Good luck!
