I have the great fortune of having both of these fine automobiles. I've had the 2002 Maserti Spyder for many years and the 2003 Ferrari 360 Spider for a few months.

I absolutely love both cars! The silver Maserati has a subtle elegance and is easy to drive. The red Ferrari is more of a head-turner and is a fine display of Italian styling.

I must admit, I thought the Ferrari would be faster. 5 more HP and 800 lbs lighter....... but slower off the line than the Maserati. But I guess the 56 extra ft lbs of torque make the difference.....

Anyway, I still love both vehicles and have a big smile on my face everyday when I drive them. :)

The Maserati is in no way faster, it's your technique.

I owned a 360 spider at the same time a best friend had a maser . The Ferrari needs to be reved to the red line quickly for max acc. whereas the maser has a bit more low end torque. If you are caught with your revs low, the Ferrari will feel slow. But make no mistake, the 360 is faster to 60 , one quarter mile and top speed.

I have a 2001 Maser spider Cambiocorsa and for the first 10 feet, a 66 VW bug can beat it. After that it takes off.

    I can't believe the 360 is slower.

does the newer generation GrandSport get the F430 engine and F1? My friend had one it was pretty close to the 360 in performance. but the 360 still feels more raw and exciting.

Maserati is a chicks car. Therefore the observation doesn't matter. ;-)

You mean it's a pick-up-chicks car. Girls love to be taken out in my Maser way more than the Ferrari.

OK, I will settle this once and for all. :) I own a 2005 GranSport and have done the hardcore drives of Crescent Classic for hundreds of miles in front, next to, and behind 360's. The GranSport does have more torque and gets a good jump, the F1 is also quicker than 360 F1 and especially a manual shifter. By the time you get up in the straight speeds everything is relatively similar. Where the 360 kills the Maserati is in the corners and braking where it matters in the first place. Who cares about straight speed, go buy a muscle car. The GranSport and especially the regular Maseratis are understeering soft pigs. The 360 as reference could lap in the range of 3-5 seconds faster on most tracks. That is huge for a car that is similar on acceleration.

I concur with Rob. The 360 is a lot quicker in cornering and braking. But in straightline acceleration, the two cars are similar.

I have run them together on a race track. The Maser is faster in low and mid range, and just about even in the top end. The 360 is a hair faster if there is a long enough straight and the car is run 8500 in each gear.

And as far as attention from the fairer sex - the Maserati beats the Ferrari by a long way. And this is a scientific fact - http://www.caranddriver.com/news/car/08q4/gentlemen_start_her_engine!-car_news

I have to agree with this as well from my own anecdotal data point with my girlfriend. She doesn't really care about cars, and sports cars in general (which is a good thing b/c my lust for them is enough for 2 people), her dream car is a Merc G55 and current realistic top preference is a 08-11 Jeep Liberty which I'm helping her buy in a couple months (she will also be my fiance' then). As for Maser vs Ferrari, she absolutely and clearly prefers the the Granturismo to any Ferrari, and she even gets excited when she sees the big Maser. She calls it the "fishmouth." It is strange. She strongly dislikes the look of all Lambos, is ambivalent about all Ferrari's and Porsches, does like the Aston's and really likes the looks of the Maserati's. Don't get me wrong, the Granturismo is an absolutely beautiful car, but in no way do I prefer it's looks to any 360 or 430 or 458 Ferrari.

The only Maserati that might give "SIMILAR" attention, but in no way greater would be a Gran Turismo Spider. Gran Sport would only work for women with extremely thick glasses that are fogged.

I own/have owned both cars, 04 Maserati Coupe (gone) and 00 360. Both are/were 3pedal cars and in the exact same color (grigio something). In fact the dealer laughed when he saw them together saying they are like distant cousins.

As for how fast they are, I agree that they are close in a straight line, but wildly different when cornering. The Maser feels big and understeers like crazy, whereas the 360 is much more balanced and significantly faster in the corners. Both are/were stock cars with Tubi (and x pipe on Maser).

I have an 06 gransport spider and a CS (so a bit lighter/more power than a regular 360)...the maser has noticeably more torque, but does not shift nearly as quickly (both of these cars came only with an F1 gearbox).

The magazines show 0-60 times of:

    Maser GS - 5.0 seconds
    CS - 4.0 seconds

But, importantly, that CS time is with the Launch control activated. And, of course, even without LC, most of us never launch our cars with the same "abandon" that the mags do when accelerating hard...

So, I think with my "normal" somewhat careful launch, the cars would be about equal to 60...

Supposedly the CS (with much lower weight and slightly higher HP) would get through the quarter mile over 1 second faster...

Oh...re the chick car comment. BDelp has it right and entirely consistent with my experience...chicks do love the Maser...

My 2002 Maserati Spyder feels much faster off the line. Accelerates much quicker than my 2003 Ferrari spider 360. No formal measurement, just my gut measurement racing off the same spots with both cars each week. I can't believe it either but passengers in my cars feel the same way. Oh well.....

How much of this is set-up and weight of the maser gt vs. 360 sports car? I thought the engnes and the F1 were basically the same.

No, I was thinking about Brian's comment.. I think he's right. Women tend to prefer cars that are "cute", more opulent and convertible.. with cupholders and well lit mirrors for checking makeup.

That being said, if I drove the Maser women would ask me where my Chihuahua was.
If any other male than myself were driving the Maser they'd get more a$$ than a NYC taxi seat. That's my luck.. ;-)

Ferrari's are good for attracting little boys. Maybe thats more your liking. Personally, I'd rather take out a hot babe.

There is nothing feminine in good style and taste.
