Got it last night B and H.. First impression was...I cannot tell it in my hands from my D300S.. It is virtually Identical..weight size and grip to me makes me think I am in last weeks camera. FOR ME...There is no learning curve...thank God! Had to update lightroom to develop raw+ fine...and lightroom certainly takes more time to open each file..my 32 gb card shows only 250 pics at this setting, maybe 3000 at normal, so that tells you just about everything.. I was expecting a bigger heavier camera, but its fine , or exceptional for its performance. The guy at B and H said they cant sell any D700's now...and ready for this, they have sold over 1 million D800's to date.. This camera has set everything back a notch or 3.. Need the weekend to find some good subject matter..but these are a few of my first 10 shots..setting the camera is identical to my 300s... never knew my watch was so scratched up... To my eyes it looks new..I have cropped these pics 200+ or more% iso 800...105 2.8 macro...about 125 sec.hand held This is some serious Sheite! Great shots! I'm hoping to get a D800 in the future, but using the D5100 for now for some portrait/landscape work. I also want that macro lens!
OMG... I can not put this camera down.. It is so what everyone wants a camera to be...If the shot is in focus...its a winner. Still cant believe I got it.. There is so much you can do when the shot has so much info imbedded in it!!!! I have a D800 and am loving it. You're right about resolution, I shot some hood ornaments at Amelia Island and when I processed some there were dust and scratches that are not visible to the casual look, and this wasn't shooting with a macro lens!
Best advantage of 36 mgp, is cropping.. This is a fish eye lens, tends to distort outer fringe areas..so much extra resolution pulls the fringes back to acceptable level. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login

200 mm 2.8 at about 1500 ft. away.. Original and crop altered.. Camera maintains hair separation at this magnification + cropping..and hand held on gloomy lighting day... NICE! Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
one "downside" to upgrading to this camera: the resolution of the sensor is so good, you may have to purchase new glass! i bought 3 new lenses after getting my d800. the image quality with some of my older nikkor lenses was not satisfactory. i did not anticipate this!
Funny, I came from a D300s..and my thoughts were the opposite..I had spent over 5 years aquiring the best lenses I could, and felt that the D300 was not as good as the lenses were made for..when I upgraded to the 800E, the playing field was equal.. still cant say enough about this camera, I am never under prepared for an event. Funny thing also..I have put my mirrorless cameras on mothballs.. Now with my i5 apple and the Nikon..I dont need anything else. Where can we / I go from here!!!!???? still waiting for Holographics
my "problem" lens was the 18-200 nikkor zoom. with the D800, images were unacceptable with this lens.
what was the f stop rating wide open..2.8 , 4.5 , or 5.6...or worse in the 5+ years I was buying lenses ..I listened to what they said," The lens is more important than the body.. 2.8 or 1.4 is the only way with this camera...if you can swing them..they are steep. My 70 - 200 2.8 was $2500.00 as much as the d 800 camera.almost. But What a lens !
I've had mine for a few months now and it still amazes me on how much resolution this camera can capture. I have printed some macro shots of sections of rock and then cropped out small sections and printed them at 13x19 inches. As long as you do your job you will get amazing results.
