Thanks Spasso for the pics... One of my all time favorites is the Roberto Rossellini 375MM of 1954... What a beaut!!!!
I concurr. The Mas du Clos collection is one of the best. I've got an interview on VHS with Pierre Bardinon from 1998, where he mentions that most of his cars were bought shorty after Ferrari was done with them, at a time when Enzo felt that last year's race car was junk. He mentioned that the 250 GTO was bought back in the 60's for roughtly 6000$. Quite a character this gent.
Awesome thread. How the hell did I miss this? Mas du Clos and Ed Niles???? I had no idea of these collections or these guys. What the hell do they do? My God!!! Also, I new Ralph Lauren has alot of serious cars BUT I never would have thought he had that many vintage Ferrari's Sweet. Keep posting boys. Vasco
The best collection i ever saw in person is of course the Turning Wheel Collection of Engelbert Stieger / Switzerland. see the list of cars posted above. but dont forget Ed and Leslie Davies. at Moroso they race every year 250 GTO, 250 Testarossa, 250 SWB, 250 TdF, 375 MM Pininfarina Spider and there are some more highlights like the Dino 206 SP displayed at the Cavallino Classics. what´s the profession of the davies ?
Right! there is one that is kept at a private track in France in the Bergundy area I believe, that is nothing short of stupendous. It was one of the stops on the 250 GT tour a few years ago while I was there and they brought out their 250 series cars (6 if I recall) to run with the 20 or so other cars from all over the world. A book was made of this trip and a few pages were dedicated just to the stop at this private race track and museum. I got to drive a Formula Renault on the track and ride an Alfa 66. Wish I could do it again.
Pierre Bardinon have had more than 300 cars in his collection. He is not a Ferrari dealer. He had a big business in Industry. Sold, and he is now enjoying life. Nice food, nice wines, nice cars... He bought recently a amazing classic Bugatti for several million dollars. And yes he drives them all, as often as possible. At forbidden speeds most of the time. He said in an interview he purchased in the late 60's a Citroën Ambulance car (a break). Pretty fast car with some improved engine parts... A friend of him who was a doctor gave him fake papers to declare he was an ambulance man. When he had to leave the Creuse "state" to Paris, he used to drive like he stole the car. If arrested by the police, he said he was an ambulanceman and he had to hurry because it was a question of life or death (it has always worked). If I remember well he ordered a tow for his 250LM to take his children with him (yes you read well). His children used to travel behind the car in the tow, lengthened on a plaid. And obviously he drove his 250LM at very high speeds... even with his passengers in the tow (the 250LM was for a long time his daily driver). The Schlumpf brothers collection is awesome, mostly a Bugatti collection. More than 130 bugattis can be seen in Mulhouse (east of France). Most of them are unique coachs. The bothers were Swiss born industrials who lived in France and they spent all their money in cars, especially Bugattis. At the end of their business they spent the salaries of their workers in... cars. Bankrupt of course. Drug addicts in a way. It is said they have bought approx 1000 cars in their life, 300 or 400 exceptional cars in it (like the Bugatti "Royale"). Two mad men. And for Obrist, some of the cars were bought in association with Ecclestone. They've decided at some point to build the best and most significant Ferrari collection in the world and they began to buy the best of each car : Best GTO 62, best GTO 64, best P4, best Testa Rossa, etc... Some F1 cars as well (at a time - early to mid nineties - were the cars were pretty pricey, to say the less). The only wrong point was Mr Obrist was animated by passion and the other mafi... Ahem, was animated by... money (as usual). Suddenly he decided to retire and to stop the adventure. Most of the cars were sold (to the benefit of Mr Ecclestone of course). But Mr Obrist is not ruined at all. The Yellow F-40 barchetta was converted by the garage Francorchamps. Lots of mechanical parts have been tooled only for this car. Was for sale on auction a few months ago here with the 348LM prototype but didn't sell. Lucky Me Today I was out with a fellow employee when I told him about a Ferrari collection in the neighborhood. I drove around trying to find it and I finally did. We parked and walked in. No one was about. Finally, a classy lady came out to greet us. She said the Marconi collection was closed for the day because they were getting really for a corporation function. Oh, well. She looked at us and said if you go quickly, you can go in without paying. Ryan had never seen so many nice Ferraris and other fine cars. It did not cost us a penny and we were out in 20 minutes.
Stunning life size oil painting available. Schumi is painted 6' tall and canvas is about 7.5' tall. Gallery owners have said one would not be over paying at $100,000. Painting available for $25,000. Plan was to sell prints but licensing not available due to cigarette issues. 40x30 prints sent to Jon Todt, M. Schumacher, and President of Ferrari N. America. Received wonderful thank you letters but no licensing. Painted by brilliant young artist in Prague who does life size NBA painting for me. I would be grateful to anyone to pass this on to a collector. Email me for High-Resolution version. For size reference I'm 6'2" in second photo. Everyone who sees these life size paintings makes the same comment: the photos don't do them justice.
