Fully agree. Apart from a few cars or auctions houses like Gooding, most cars sold at auctions are now usually below-the-average quality. To me, auction results often mean nothing in assessing the value of a car, espcially at the present time where there are so few nice cars on the market. I found my best cars either from long-time collectors friend of mine or through highly specialised merchants. Finding a great car is generally a genuine quest. By the way, very nice collection Henk! I see we have somewhat similar tastes (and similar cars). Please let me know if you are in Paris someday so that we can meet up.
I personally feel the results were pretty good, as ever, the best most original cars command the money and the other struggle, that has always been the case with 25 years of collecting cars now. Ebbs and Flows over the years always flatten out and the same message is always mentioned, always buy the best that that will pay dividends. The Mecum number for the La Ferrari stands out, as it makes The F40, F50 and Enzo not to mention the GTO seems such god value compared.. The 4.7 does this include buyers premium?
Somebody got a bargain. I don't understand 250GTO's selling for $45m and one of the greatest cars ever created by the human race selling for 1/3rd. Not saying GTO's are not awesome, but a 8c2900B is on a much high level of awesomeness. Pete
The GTO is much more well-known and that certainly plays some part in its perceived value. Pete I think it has to be said that, although I would love to have this car, 412041 is not among the top rank of the road-going 2.9s for several reasons. A no-stories corto Touring-bodied 2.9 B should go for a healthy multiple over this one's selling price. That said, I can't dispute your point.
Sunday morning in Zeeland NL. Nice reading over breakfast. Great work guys! Thank you Timmy for putting all this together, guess I will have to check out Gooding, I do get their catalogs. Amazingly low prices for all those Maseratis at RM (were they in poor condition?), and damn I should have gone for that Maserati A6G...
I would prefer the Touring Berlinetta myself and of course some 8c2900's have very important race history ... surely blank cheque material! Pete
I agree. I would much rather have the Alfa than any GTO. It has it all....incredible beauty, advanced body design (Superleggera), racing pedigree, the fastest production car of its time etc. etc. Anyone know where it went to???
Sorry for off-topic but what cars are considered top tier 2.9s? I would guess John Mozart's Corto Spyder and the Berlinettas of John Shirley and Collier (MM winner)?
Four of the five Coupes are totally original. Several of the spiders ditto. Simon Moore's books on the subject are wonderful in not only giving the facts for these 8c's but telling a story that is a homage to these wonderful cars.
Although its an ugly duck - I can only hope that its bulky PF-coachwork will not taken away and replaced by the much more beautiful Zagato-coachwork for this type and then be sold for Euro 1-1.5m... (A correct A6G 2000 Zagato comes now for Euro 4.5m). Ciao! Walter
And don`t forget Lauren`s 2.9, the MM winner! Overrestored and in the wrong color today - but OK... Its a FANTASTIC car! Ciao! Walter
The facts evolved always. Not only the Moore's book can dissolve the fog, a good automotive historian can do it too. If the new owner wants to give me a call....
Lauren's car (ex hill, lee, serri) is not the MM winner. It came in 2nd, the winner is owned by Simione.
Ooops, yup - you are right! However -IMO Fred`s car and the Lauren 2.9 are both the crown jewels of the Alfa 2.9. Ciao! Walter
