For those interested in a caravan rally up Highway 1, a friend and I are flying into LA Monday and plan to meet at FastCars in Redondo Beach for a tour of Craig’s shop Tuesday before taking a road trip up the coast over Tuesday and Wednesday with an overnight likely in San Luis Obispo to break up the drive a bit. Craig is doing the rally prep on my 1954 Ferrari Mondial 500 and another fchatter and I are driving it up for car week. Post here if you’re interested in making the trip as a group etc so we can make hotel plans etc. Image Unavailable, Please Login
I'm going. Have an entry for Concorso Italiano. Bringing the Fiat Dino Spider which I'm planning on driving out from Vegas. Was planning on going to Bakersfield and then turning north but I could be convinced otherwise. One problem. I have to finish the damn car.
That’s the idea. I believe JSinNola is planning on sending his car to drive up and if Craig is driving up and I am along with some other guys we’ll have a decent caravan of cars to keep together and help out if someone has an issue. It’ll be much more fun than just shipping cars out for the week to incorporate a bucket list type drive with it.
Do we have dates? I need to make hotel arrangements. I was planning on coming back on Sunday through Bakersfield, stay overnight, and then back to Vegas.
I’m thinking leave LA Tuesday Aug 12 to drive up. Stop over in San Luis Obispo that night and continue driving to Monterey Wednesday 13th.
My passenger seat is empty. You don’t fit behind the wheel, but you DO fit riding shotgun. And you might even have a shotgun!
I suspect it’s less to send to LA than Monterey that week anyhow. The bill to send my challenge cars a couple years ago would make you stutter.
It's a pretty easy drive. I-70 to Utah and pick up US 50, next stop is Sacratomato. Just be sure to gas up before you start US 50. Cell phones won't work.
To me it may make more sense to ship the car to LA back and forth from Vegas. Then drive the coast up and down. If I do that the total mileage is about the same driving from Vegas to Monterey but I can avoid the desert heat and stress. So I'm closer to this idea than I was yesterday. Here is my problem! That's a fun run up the coast. I have not done it in a Ferrari in a few decades. I would ship your car to avoid the dessert. It can get hot in Monterey by the coast! It can be over 100F on the way up through Paso sometimes. I would be too soft to make that drive with no A/C . I race at Laguna at least twice a year and where ever I stay up there I always ask if they have A/C. Many of the places don't have A/C claiming "we're by the water" but reality is just a mile or 2 inland makes a huge difference. Anyone making that drive especially in an older classic car should make sure the cooling system is 100%. If the cooling system came from factory marginal I would modernize it. Also, do some homework. I think there are still either periodic "shut down" construction zones or full on closures on parts of Hwy 1 due to year year's mudslide washing out the road. I wonder what the SoCal fires will do to car week? There are classic cars in just about every garage around here. The more expensive the hood the more expensive the toys what might have been going to car week. I bet lots of classic cars were lot in the fires.
By the way as far as I can tell the Moss Landing battery storage area fire is north bay and I do not remember a single car week thing up near moss landing. I can't imagine that would effect car week at all.
Shipping your car makes sense. If you drive you would need to leave before daybreak and quit by noon.
