Hi P.: Of course, everything there was red back then, except the black R Type Continental. Marcel Massini
To bad it didn't sink in a fresh water lake.It might still be restorable.Salt water unfortunately will corrode everything. By the way do we know when the engine went into the hydro? tongascrew
http://jalopnik.com/petersen-tried-to-auction-hot-rod-without-mentioning-it-958855451 Very important article to read before going to any auction.
275 GTB 0 8 0 3 9 auction company description "Outstanding example". That nose shape is something I haven't seen before on any 275 GTB.
That's not the only lot with a somewhat "vague" description in that catalogue. There's an air of frenzy in this auction season.

What I have been surprised by is the lack of $5 mil. + lots at Gooding. I am also very impressed with RM's consignments both overall and the Ferrari 375MM & 275 GTB/4 NART Spider. There is only so much money in the buying market at any given time. I do agree, that there is more money today than a year ago, but the amount of serious machinery being on he market at any one time is pretty interesting.
I did a search on 0690. It appears to be a "new-body" (barchetta) with a 250 California engine (0935) according to the gooding website. The gearbox is 0708. Is this correct for $1.5M? What's the going rate for a numbers matching model? Are the original engine and transmisison with a different car, stored somewhere or lost?
The Gooding Catalogue very accurately describes exactly what it is and what it's history was. As an aside I have the watch that Fidel gave to Fangio after kidnapping him which is part of the story...
Must be a reprint on Gooding's website. In the description, it's said the car is fitted motor with an early outside plug motor (a fact also confirmed by their photograph of the engine compartment). Obviously, 0935 GT is an INSIDE plug motor. Perhaps Gooding meant to say it's fitted with Engine No. 1935 GT? (i.e. which is a fairly early Tipo 128F OUTSIDE plug motor from a 250 GT PF Coupe). Regarding the gearbox, the auction description notes that the transmission from 0708 TR ACCOMPANIES the car (which sounds like some other gearbox is currently installed).
Considering the 625TRC sold at RM Monaco last year @ US$6.5 million and two 500TRC sold in the past two years at roughly $4. One would need to believe $4 - 5 million is the going rate for a TRC, 1.5 - 2 million is cheap BUT it is only an original chassis with everything else new. Fitted with a 3 litre engine and no risk of destroying history buy it and race it with no worries and to be able to do that for under $2 million, it is cheap.
You can race it in your private race track but cannot get an FIA HTP with a V12 engine..you will have somewhere to find a 4 cyl engine and transmission. By that time you have spent as much money as buying an authentic MD with its original body and hopefully engine, although we know there are less of those than claimed...
There is also the issue of the people it killed. There are some who are superstitious about owning a car involved in massive death toll.
Jim, can you post a picture of the watch? I am sure others would like to see it, as well. Regards, George
