I believe the Mondial 8 has the same size wheels front and back.

The QV introduced different sized front and rears?

Was it the later 3.0 QV that saw the introduction of the sizes that allowed more modern tyres to be used?

Is there another change on the 3.2s and onwards? Did the wheels get wider/larger?

My 83 QV came with identical metric wheels, IIRC.
They are 240/55 VR 390 tires.

87 qv had different width front and rear using trx tyres. You can buy aftermarket wheels which give you a choice of a bigger range of tyres and lot cheaper than trx

Trying to avoid TRX wheels. I believe the QV TRX wheels are part numbers part no front 127465 and part no rear 127457.

    that’s great, thank you.

so the key is to avoid vr390s and opt for ZR15 or ZR16 if I want to use sensible tires?

It's your money but VR390s are $550ish each for a tire compound designed 30-40 years ago. In comparison, even 18s or 19s are $250 or less.

    Correction:
I realized as I was taking inventory of my take-off parts that my 83 Mondial came with 220/55VR390 tires up front and 245/55VR390 in the back.

I went with balanced setup of all 4 wheels being 225/40R18 tires on 18"x8.5" wide wheels.
I really like the Fifteen52 Chicane wheels I picked out.

Front wheels are at full drop; Rear suspension has no shock assembly installed so stool is holding control arms at approx ride height.
More details including fitment comparison pictures vs stock in this post from my build log (no sense in duplicating the data)

My 83qv came with the original wheels, the (dreaded, imo) metric 390's. Because of cost and lack of tire options, I did what many Mondial owners have done, and purchased a set of 348 rims. I also happen to think the 348 rims look way better than the originals, but that of course is 100% subjective, as beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

But the 348 rims allowed for greater option of tires, since they are more common sizes, 215/50ZR-17 and 255/45ZR-17.

What's the largest and widest wheels anyone has put on a Mondial that still looked good?

Looks like there might be space for a 20" rim if the tires were of a low enough profile.

I think "looks good" is a highly subjective term; I'm sure there are people in this world who would love to drive a donk'd mondial.
I'd personally love to see one so if someone said they had a set of 22s in 5x108 bolt pattern, I'd say throw them on and let's take a few pics for the Lulz. The car wouldn't leave my garage though.

The smallest diameter 20" tire is a 225/30R20

They would technically fit but they look like serious rubber bands (25.3" OD, 8.9" width)

    The smallest diameter 21" tire is 245/30R21 @ 26.8"
Even sillier, but you'd need to put some giant spacers on the front AND likely lift the vehicle. Hence, donktown. at that point, you might as well slap a skittles logo on the side, maybe 6" ben-hur spikes out the wheels, replace your non-period correct scudiera badges with a Swarovski crystal emblem proudly proclaiming 21s, and fully embrace this odd subculture.
