I created a nifty chart that has average sale prices from Ferrari Market Letter for the various Mondial models.

    Some thoughts

    1) Looks like there was a steady decline in price among all models and really exacerbated to the ‘low point’ during the financial crisis

    2) The price is steadily increasing, this is biased wishful thinking of course; but I think the ‘low’ is behind us and it’s clear from this point…as far as how valuable these become – who knows – but I do know Ferrari’s policy of limiting production to keep demand high only reinforces the general demand for anything bearing the prancing horse. I strongly believe time will treat all Ferrari well.

    Enjoy my brothers:

I can't figure out why everyone thought it looked good to wear their pants so high back then. Of course, we've gone in the complete opposite direction these days...

The price trend mirrors what I expected, although I'm surprised that the cabs are priced higher than coupes, since coupes are more rare.

I'll have to laugh to myself if the Mondial follows the Dino 206/246 trend, and goes from whipping boy to saint. Of course, I think the 3x8 will be the price leader from this era, due to being a prominent subtext in a crappy '80's TV show. That goes for the Testarossa too (the crappy '80's TV show thing), but jeez those things are expensive to maintain. But the rising tide floats all boats as they say.

Now if I can only get past the overwhelming guilt and self-loathing I feel every time I drive the Mondial... :(

Hi guys - sorry I saw my chart had some wrong graphs - I just updated so it should make much more sense now.....

These are based on prices people are listing on Ferrari Market Letter.

Just as an informal price check, I've been seeing Ts going for around 40K on eBay/AutoTrader - so after some negotiation - I can see around 37.5 as final selling prices....reduce to 2-4K for the 3.2s .... again reduce another 2-4K for the QV and then reduce 10K for the 8.

    Nice.

    Thanks for the work.

Is there one of these for the 308's?

The coupes were made in smaller numbers because they weren't as desired. Still true.
Rarity in and of itself doesn't equate to value.

Hi Vizsla - keep in mind that this is a small sub section of the sales. In my opinion the coupes are generally worth more (at least here in America) - the ultra smaller numbers prevent any real data on them - and I suspect most of them are being kept by collectors....with the ones going on sale having some 'real' problems to em' ... hence the lower price.

I think here in America at least, the coupes will garner a premium over cabs...

    just my .02

I don't have a chart...butI see the 308s going for the mid 30s, 328s going for about the low 40s...

    Hope this helps!

Convertibles traditionally tend to be more popular here in the US than in other markets.
In any case the market will do what it wants.

I do agree that Mondials are undervalued as a class and should be the next Ferrari to catch the wave.

Sure, if you like your car to handle like a noodle and look like it's wearing a diaper for a roofline.

    I wonder...

I've put the word out that my very nice 3.2 Coupe is available for $23k and so far, after 5 months, no interest. Granted, I haven't advertised publically at all.

Were we traumatized by a convertible at an early age?
    ;)

Yes dynamically a roofless car (until quite recently at least) will come off second best to a coupe but the US market has traditionally valued looks over ultimate performance.
    The market doesn't lie.

    Hi Wade,

Is there an ad for your coupe listed anywhere ?? If as you say, you've simply/only "put out the word", I believe Fchat Ads would be a good place to continue - as regards "spreading" the word. :):)

    Cheers,

    Hank

Thanks Hank... I really don't want to sell but I probably should. Right now "My Garage" does show a few photos.

I almost listed it on the FerrariAds but started restoring the house instead. So that's taking up most of my time right now.

Solid point, I'll take a sledge hammer to mine since a cab is clearly a POS.

Or did you mean an uncooked noodle? That would explain what I took to be an entirely ignorant comment.

Luckily, Mondial t fans have a choice of coupe or convertible!!!

While you can put a convertible on the track, it is not as rewarding as a coupe. But then lots of folks are happy just cruising around, and don't care about tracking their car. Other than the complexity of putting the top up or down (which can be mastered, waiting for someone to design an electric motor!!LOL), the Mondi cab is pretty fun ride, with decent back seats. Few cars can match it.

I do prefer the 89's because I hate the autobelts, but that is just me.

    Regards,
    Jerry

Ugh, I am so sorry for that last post under my username...it would appear that my prankster younger brother has struck again. :( He was visiting me late last week. I left my laptop sitting with a partial response typed up...one thing led to another and I simply forgot about it. I return this evening to find a fairly rude response posted in my name that probably offended the majority of folks on this forum. I am so embarrassed.

Anyway I was planning to say something about how I preferred the rigidity of a coupe body over a cab, how I'd made a similar choice when I bought my 911, how in the 911 world coupes command higher prices than cabs or targas, and how I was surprised to see that the Ferrari world was different.

Again, I'm terribly sorry if the post offended anyone. I will edit the post and remove the comment. Hopefully I'm not forever shunned for it. :(

Edit: Well it looks like I can't actually edit or change the comment at this point, so let me just say I don't think the Mondial cab handles like a noodle (yes, I've driven one) and I don't think it looks like it's wearing a diaper.

    Hi everyone.

I bought last month an 1988 3.2 Cab here in Portugal, where I live.

Regarding the Mondial's price history I can't say much, other than complementing paulchua's research and work.

It seems tough, from the experience I gathered while looking for my dream Mondial, that over here in Europe, generally speaking (and specially in Portugal), all Mondials as a general rule are pricier.

For instance: I bought mine for 33.500€ (46.500 USD at today's rate) and it was a bit of a bargain over here, since the car is in mint condition, only 44.200km on the clock (roughly 27500mi) and Ferrari Classiche certified. That was the second lowest asking prince I found over here, after months of intense searching even in other countries (Spain and the UK, for instance).

I'm blown away by the (low) asking prices of Mondials in the US! And it's not like there are a bunch of Mondial's in the US, as it was built in fairly reduced numbers (if you break it down by engine type: Ferrari only made 810 of mine, for instance), so I can't really grasp why that is.

Over here I believe the car's value has bottomed out, as "new" Mondials for sale aren't really getting any cheaper (below the 30.000€ barrier). I believe slow but steady increase in value is coming in the next decade.

    Cheers,

    Nuno.

    Nuno,
Your car sounds like mine, 88 with 27k miles mint, but I plan to keep my Mondial for another 20 years when I retire. Funny thing was I had someone asking me to buy it and I said sorry, shes not for sale, even if the guy offered $50k US. Its all supply and demand and for these cars will only get alot better! Is it possible to get an emotional attachment to your car ??? 28 cars so far I have owned and my Mondial is the only one I won't sell!

    Cheers

That did not sound like you, glad we cleared that up !
I would totally agree that the Porsche 911 coupes command alot more than its Targa or Cabs but not for an F car! Besides, only a small percent of owners track their car, these are usually weekend CnC cars to keep the guys sane away from the wife! ooops, I said that out loud didn't I ?
