    Hi
I need to replace the original cigarette lighter with a modern version so I can connect a phone charger etc. I bought a replacement on the weekend from Halfords here in the UK and when I fitted it the diameter was slightly too big and tried to squeeze it in and broke the plastic illuminating rim on the new lighter. Bought another and broke that too. It seems that 28mm is the standard hole size for lighters but the Mondial is roughly 26mm. Has anyone replaced one that fits, preferably illuminated so I can get it done please.
I know I can get an adaptor to fit the power socket in the glove box but its too small for what I need.
    Many thanks, Peter.

Just a thought here: My car has a conventional lighter socket fitted under the dash near the steering wheel. The car came with a very vintage radar detector, so it must have been installed for it. The location would actually be pretty good for cord management, and then you don't impact the original lighter.

Hi Peter, thanks for your reply.
I didnt really want to start wiring up and putting a socket under the dash and making holes but i do agree its a great solution.
The problem i have is that the original lighter is the push down type that automatically lights the cigarette when you place it in the hole of the lighter. It not anything like a modern lighter where you push the top part and it pops out when ready.
Also it no longer works but the main point that i want to change it is because you cannot plug anything into it because of the design of this type of lighter, its an odd fitting. A new modern type is what i need but not sure where i can get one with the correct diameter.
    Thanks very much, Peter.

    Hi Mike,
Great to hear from you. The lighter doesnt work at all, therefore i cant plug anything in there of any type to get power which is why i need to change it. I checked the wiring with a multimeter and is all good which is great news so i know that a replacement will work once installed.
    Thanks, Peter.

Do you have an aux outlet in your glove box?
Try using that as a power source, its much easier as I found out. You just need to buy an aux chord that works for that small connection that Ferrari uses -bmw bikes uses these chords. http://ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=344077&highlight=lighter&page=2

Yes i have it in the glove box and engine compartment too with the original light it was designed for still in the tool case.
I dont want to drive with the glove box open when i plug something in and have to keep reaching over and is so small its already cramped in there.
I guess that will do for now but really want to eventually get a modern type. I am sure i saw a thread before about this but cannot find it.
Thanks again and great to see your thread about photos on the way to work, great idea!
    Cheers. Peter.

    Hi Mike,
i just saw the thread you posted and thats the one i was looking for. Its the lighter from Pep Boys, the Casco #212140. That was posted 6 years ago, i looked on their website and dont seem to have it anymore. They stock Bell lighters instead now but not sure if it would fit the diameter.
Not sure if they ship to the UK but i will need to call and get a measurement first.
    Thanks again thats great, Peter.

Hi Peter, I also stopped by Pep Boys and they did not have Casco #212140 but had a generic part that I think would fit just as well. I ended up returning it and never followed thru in trying to do what you are doing. The glovebox aux power is good enough for me as I did not want to hack my car anymore than I have to. BTW, the wire will clear the glovebox lid when closed so for me, its not a big deal since I don't need power when I drive my Ferrari going to work or home. However, I could see the need for use on long distance travels.
