I am amazed how cheap these cars are now. When I was in high school, it was "the car" to have. I used to love them. Now you can pick up an SL Spyder for $15k and a late 90's VR-4 (twin turbo) for $10k-15k (street price). You can get a mid 90's base model with average-low miles for $5-7k! Back in the day, the 3000GT was the competitor to the RX-7, Corvette, Supra, etc. Being Japanese, I imagine its reliable and while I only drove one once, it was fun to drive. A big, heavy GT car but comfortable, good handling, well put together. Are they prone to problems? Seems like it would be a fun car to have and I bet a VR-4 (AWD) with snow tires would be a kick-ass winter car
I recall my brother looking for one, and doing some research and finding out they have alot of problems. Here-say, so take it for what its worth. Nice car though, the first sports car I ever drove...
they were fun cars when they were new and under warranty. i would respectfully suggest you stay far away from them for many reasons on many levels.
Where can you find a good Spyder for 15K?? 3si.org is the "ferrarchat" of the 3000/Stealth world. I like them- they have aged well compared to many of the other sports cars from Japan at that time. The tuner crowd is using up the available stock of this car pretty quick...
VR-4 engine had a 'street life' of 100K miles, iirc. I've also heard the transmission was made of glass. Probably due to the car being AWD.
If you are aware of the folks at Hennessey Performance (the dudes who do the 1000 hp Viper Venom's) John started out tuning and racing his Mitsu 3000... He speaks fondly of it... Talk to some orphan owners check out that site ^^^^ let us know what you find, it is a great platform and is easily modified, there are quite a few out there and you are right the value is LOW might be a great hidden gem
I was looking at some of the classifieds pages and some had Spyders for $15k - not VR-4 spyders but rather SL's and maybe mid-late 90's with under $100k miles. As I recall the Spyder was a $60+k car when new. Although from the responses here, it sounds like the car is not reliable and not something one would want to get into used. You guys scared me What about the non-VR4 (non-turbo) models? They arent AWD so maybe the tranny holds up better? Or are the problems talked about not just the tranny?
I use to drive the "worlds fastest 3000gt/stealth" for the old team Great car. All wheel drive and steering. i know there trannys and drive shafts have a lot of problems Antony
Mike, send a PM to Will, he as one in Argentina now I think. http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/member.php?u=736
mines back in the US now. Has near 600 hp. I had to rebuild the transfer case once. nothing else too bad. very good for winter in VR4 form
I had a VR-4 for a few years. It was only a year or so old when I got it. I drove it HARD for a few years. No issues. Fun car. If I recall correctly, it was too heavy.
My Dad bought the Dodge Stealth R/T twin turbo version of this car when it came out. He put 175,000 miles on it, mostly freeway, over an 8 year period. He never had a major problem with the car. He said it was a blast to drive, especially in the snow when he would go skiing. If I recall, he mentioned that there were some electrical gremlins that he needed to run down, but that there were no major mechanical failures.
Don't know why you'd consider a non-turbo model. They're not quick by any means. VR4s are quick. They also have their share of problems, but if you find a well-maintained one, and keep up with it, you shouldn't have a lot to worry about. If I recall right, they had a complicated dash/stereo electrical system that sometimes has problems too. Image Unavailable, Please Login
