Hey guys, I spend hours a day looking through the classic threads, I love the fact so many of you can tell the vin number from an old grainy photo and a short story. It’s like you all know the history of almost all vintage f-cars. One thing I was wondering was, are there many or hundreds of vintage Ferraris that are unaccounted for. I'm talking pre 1960s. Ones where you know the vin numbers, but no history of the car... I would be interested to know how many are hiding.

There still are missing Ferraris from the '50s and '60s. Tom S. bought the remains of a Devin on ebay last year for $26k, fortunately for him, it was really Ferrari 340 America 202A wearing a Devin body (by the way, Tom I want the Devin body... :) ).

    Regards,

    Art S.

Get on the online 330 GT Registry. http://www.parrotbyte.com/330GTRegistry/

This board tracks the 1100 or so 330 2+2's and 50 330 Americas that were manufactured by Ferrari.

You'll immediately notice the number of cars that have zero info; then if you go one by one through the cars that have info, the trails of quite a few of them went cold many years ago.

I'd venture that few cars are actually 'missing' - their owners just don't want the publicity of everyone knowing what $$$$$$ vintage Ferraris are in their garage. These cars 'used' to be cheaply available, and not every owner out there lives in a Gated community with security guards and fancy alarm systems and whatnot. Their current 'market' value, and the greed/hysteria that surrounds these old cars are a double-edged sword. Their owners are sitting on a terrific investment that tends to draw the nefarious, the vultures, the scammers, thieves....restoring one is a huge and frighteningly-expensive undertaking that not every current owner out there can afford. I would imagine that more-than-a-few owners just leave the car under the tarp in the back of the garage.

Also, these cars are 40+ years old...they were a wealthy man's car, and those that could afford them in the 1950's and 60's were more than likely middle-aged. If younger, they were children of wealth or sports and entertainment stars. Today's tech era of numerous 25 year old multimillionaires was a long way in the future.

Speaking of 330 2+2's, I'd guess worldwide there are a couple of hundred cars sitting long-unused in the garages of very elderly owners or their widows, or tucked away in estate property storage.

i guess your right, there are probably too many to count... but are there many famous cars, ex racers, or significantly famous cars that went missing years ago?
