Michigan Colleges

Job prospect wise those are regional names.

Michigan and Michigan State are known throughout the country. What would her prospective major be?

 

consider one of the Univ of Calif schools? there are many to choose from.

 

Not from there but Ann arbor is a cool city. My friend is an aeronautics prof there. Cool places in the city like zingermans and blimpy burger.

 

You need to also consider the cloud cover...sunny days are fewer east of Lake Michigan says a guy who's always lived west of same.

no reason to attend any of those schools outside of UM from out of state

 

Babson has a national rep and a quality one. Great alum network. None of which these three schools have. Limited local economics after graduation.

When i was there, all three of the schools were third choices after MSU/UM which you would hopefully transfer back to.

Wasn't Kalamazoo voted one of the most dangerous places? Mt Pleasant....

State went crazy with Covid tyranny and lockdowns. Lots of Michigans youth leave for greener pastures.

I live in Michigan so I can comment about the 3 cities; the only empirical knowledge I have about the colleges themselves is that an engineer that works in my group went to WMU and he turned out great.

Regarding the cities: Ann Arbor is indeed the coolest with Zingerman's and tons of other good places to go. And U of M is indeed nationally recognized as one of the best. Second as afar as cities is Kalamazoo which is my personal favorite (it is home to America's first pedestrian mall (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kalamazoo_Mall), is quite walk-able and quite safe. Also has some great breweries which maybe isn't the criteria you're looking for. Mt. Pleasant is OK but doesn't really have a downtown like the other 2 cities.

As to the weather: pack warm, it sure ain't Texas! We can indeed get 20 degrees (as the high temp of the day!) for a week or more, but all the breweries have warm winter caps at good prices

 

So many friends/co-workers went to TT and only heard great things about theirs and their kids experience. Good luck, I told my kids "you'll wind up where you're meant to be". Both of them toured tons of schools and new when the visited "the one". Enjoy the ride, my last one just graduated and as proud as I am, I am equally as sad not go get all those spring breaks, summer breaks, trips to campus, etc. It goes fast!!

As a parent, I have mixed feelings about U of M. My son just graduated from Michigan and he had access to amazing opportunities, but couldn’t wait to leave Ann Arbor. On the plus side, he was a physics major and got to work on some great projects that put him in the position to go to grad school for “free.” Air quotes because his research is why they want him. Beyond academics he did club triathlon, campus orchestra, and found a great community of friends. However on the down side, if you are an out of stater, you will be paying full freight. My son was a National Merit Qualifier and he still didn’t get any free money. Also, to add insult to injury, his AP credits actually hurt him financially and didn’t give him any academic advantages. U of M has a two tier tuition system. Once you have enough credits to be a junior, you pay $2,500 more per semester. In my son’s case his AP credits moved him to “junior” status his second semester freshman year. Likewise, unless you are a top 100 athlete, U of M doesn’t want you even as a walk on. In my experiences as both a college athlete and as a parent, you’re better off at a private school if you want to compete all four years. Likewise, private D3 schools tend to have very good academic scholarships to lure talented athletes.

 

Sounds like a good plan.

 

Regarding UM, it is known worldwide as a top notch school. Sent my son there 20 yrs ago. He still tells me people are impressed wherever he goes and they learn of his education. Currently he works for Apple in Cupertino.
Myself I'm a MSU Grad. Good school, but not as notable as many schools that have been mentioned. Depends on the major. I was a dual major at MSU, Industrial Design/Business.
It's all up to the student as to what you get out of it.
WMU is in Kalamazoo, not a bad place, but no where near as cool as Ann Arbor. Lansing, MSU is fine. The campus is great.
Weather is another topic. Winter sucks. Period. But if you like winter sports, it can be great. I also attended college in LA and I did like living in the more temperate climate, yet I've lived here in Michigan for the better part of my life for employment opportunities.
