Jason, Pocono Sportscar has done so much to keep my car in top form. I forgot to mention that they change the coolant and air filters annually when the gearbox oil is changed. Barry
Like fatboy said high freq hearing is shot and deaf in one ear. That's one strange sound sounds more external then internal
Jason, You shouldn't feel bad about having a major service done this winter. For track cars, a 3-4 year interval is best. You're at that time now. Barry
In first pose you mentioned you did not think alternator but Its worth checking the alternator pulley sound can echo and sound like its elsewhere. If its external as you suspect its not many things.
You may get this. It sounds exactly like the open primary on my panhead. Got to be something simple. I know the alternator overheats and blow up a lot. If it is that add a cooling duct to it with the repair. I think I have a naca duct on all of mine to keep it cool. All those rpms make a horney alt. Also thought about a pully change to keep rpms down a wee but but never did it
It could be anything. Like has been mentioned by the fatone, use a mechanics stethoscope to isolate exactly where the noise is coming from.
Motor is out and front timing cover off. The serpentine belt fence on the main sprocket came off as per pic below. I had welded the fences on to the cam sprockets when motor was out for the last major three years ago. The fence on the main drive sprocket will now be welded on as well. That welding job did not do the trick. The problem is the fence is a completely different metal to the sprocket so this is always going to be very difficult to weld. It might be better to Braze it rather than weld.
Yeah- for sure. After racing for years, i'm pretty paranoid about any changes in sound or new sounds. Glad I picked-up on this one as soon as it started. Daniel- ouch!!!
When you heard this sound, did it change at all when the clutch was depressed? I have no idea why it would. Just asking because I have a high pitched noise that changes when the clutch is depressed.
The fence on the main drive sprocket is the usual culprit of failed fences not the cam sprocket fences I have noticed. As far as dis-similar metal welding it's done all the time. Not to say the welder did it correctly or anything but different metals is not a huge issue. Are we sure they are different to begin with?
All back together and running. Should be on chassis dyno Thursday. Took the opportunity to rebuild the shocks, cosmetically repair the 348 Challenge brake duct undertrays, replace the fuel lines, and refinish the two sets of white Speedline challenge wheels. Have been waiting for rebuilt shocks, which should hopefully arrive tomorrow. You are very fortunate to catch this in time ! Needless to say one must be very cautious when removing or especially installing this main drive pulley. I can imagine there are probably have been many instances where "novice" mechanics are often too quick to pick up a hammer and start swinging when installing back on the shaft. One inadvertent "blow" and striking the fence would be a major contributing factor................
Ride height set, alignment for the track set. Just came off the chassis dyno. Hope to have it on-track at Lime Rock tomorrow! Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
