I'm replacing a composite shingle roof and like the look and durability of concrete tile although the weight would require extensive roof reinforcement. I'm leaning toward stone-coated metal tile (weight, durability and looks). The specific product I'm looking at is here: http://www.gerardusa.com/tile-roofing.htm

Anybody here have experience with this kind of roofing, pros/cons? TIA

I just finished doing my roof with this stuff and it looks great. The problem is that is is really hard to work with and if your existing roof sheating is not perfectly flat you will see ripples and waves in it. I just had to live with it, and it isn't really that bad except from about a bock away. I laid the stuff myself and believe me I would never do it myself again. It nearly killed me.

Thanks Glassman - so basically a good product, best applied directly on decking (not over existing shingles) and best done by a roofer (not a DIY) That's the kind of info I needed. Cool.

    I'm a contractor....insulation contractor.

I've heard & seen good things about these roofs. With every year we continue to see newer products & materials....right down to shingles that have built-in solar panel$. Many of these roofings materials are super-high priced.....but as time goes by they've become more reasonable. I'm pretty sure the roof you are looking at is not only reasonable but really makes sense in terms of price, longevity & loooks.

The only issues I've heard is that the metal roofs can be difficult to walk on and they are "loud" when it's raining hard. I dunno, just a few things I've heard that warrant bringing to your attention.

Personally, when my 30-year comp starts getting old, I'm planning on moving in the same direction. I've heard interesting things about some kind of composite material that is made with plastic and looks like slate...supposedly last forever, etc.

Oh, one other thing...metal gets hot when beat by the sun...make sure you have LOTS of good ventillation for your attic...and of course, check your insulation; should be about 12" to be R30, most people have 2-3" and think it's fine.

I'm not on F-chat too often anymore, so pm for any other questions (as I may not see this thread for a while)
