I have never seen this breadvan daytona in the flesh, but its photos are about as ugly as a daytona could get to be. I wouldnt trade it even for one despite its 'historical" significance, whatever that is.
Coachi, the Breadvan isn't a Daytona... It started life as a 250 GT SWB (S/N 2819 GT) and was soon after turned into the Breadvan...
Does anyone know WHY it's for sale? I know the owner is quite the enthusiast and I've followed the car for a while. Hopefully he's going to trade 'up'?
Here's what the breadvan looks like when it's about to blow right past you. Image Unavailable, Please Login
'chop or not (and I don't think it is) that's one of the best images ever posted on FChat. IMO, James
Thanks! I took it riding shotgun at a photoshoot a while back. Here's another. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Count Giovanni Volpi sold the Breadvan for $2500 when he was finished with it. He gave me a driving lesson in Italy in the car (when still a 250 SWB) when it was new. The back fenders had been cut with metal scissors so larger tires could be fitted. I owned a 1958 Alfa spyder at the time (60HP ?). To this day, I vividly remember how that engine revved and sounded. He arranged for the factory to sell me a SWB for $4100. I was an Air Force fighter pilot based in Germany with the USAFE "Skyblazers" jet aerobatic team(F100C Super Sabre) with an annual salary of $3600. I passed on the deal and later bought a 12,000 mile 300SL for $3800, which I rolled two weeks later. Life consisted of Air, Ass, and Alcohol in those heady days.
http://www.playerviolin.com/misc/breadvan/ferrari_breadvan_home.htm A huge thanks to Thomas for helping out with all this. I'll post the Robb Report article when it comes out. Cheers, Fred
Wow!! I just love this car. Thanks for sharing the pics its just fantastic! If I had the money .... Martin
Here's a picture of a guy who "had the money" in 1967. Asa Clark when he owned the Breadvan. He was president of FOC that year. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Maybe it's just the angle ... the only difference I can see is that maybe the brake duct holes are now a little larger. Pete
Here's the article, August issue, should be just hitting the stands: http://www.playerviolin.com/misc/breadvan_robb/breadvan.htm A huge thanks to xs10shl for helping me with logistics on this one. "You da man!" Cheers, Fred
Fred, Whose wife were you referring to regarding the big split with Enzo and his engineers? I didn't think Enzo's wife even was interested in the company?, but I am no expert. Great read BTW Pete
It's been said that it was Enzo's wife who was partially to blame for the split... What's not always noted, however, is that one or two of the people who left, later came back to continue to work for Ferrari...
While beauty is in the eye of the beholder, I do not think that this car is anything close to ugly. (The Breadvan's lines are very similar to the GTO, albeit not as sensuous.) Anyone want to elaborate on why they find the car "ugly"?
