Occasionally I catch that "latest and greatest" bug, then I go drive my 6L AMG W126.... Problem solved. I really do feel for people that think that way. Most new cars just aren't as good as their predecessors. Perfect example being Lamborghini. The new ones are just silly. Who on earth wants AWD and an automatic in a "supercar?" Not I. A supercar, to me anyway, should handle well (and take some skill to drive).

AWD and good handling are not words that can be used in the same sentence. The Gallardo, the Aventador, and the Murcie all have catastrophic understeer at the limit. Now, look at the rear drive Diablo models. Handling is much, much better, and the car is a lot more fun because of it. Sure, it actually takes some driver skill to put a Diablo through it's paces, but that's not entirely a bad thing.

    No kidding.

At least the Mercedes is a bit less of an attention getter. Theoretically speaking, you could do your shopping without the paparazzi swarming you in the parking lot asking about the "really loud Mustang"........

    Good problem to have!

I agree with MB Rick about newer models being not necessarily better than older ones.
I have a W210 AMG E55 and love it. I had a W123 turbo diesel that was beat but I loved it too. I drove a new E350 and it was OK I guess but lacked that intangible quality of the older stuff.

I recently looked at R129 V12s ('90s SLs). These are the last of the old line SLs before the dip in quality from 2000-on. There are beautiful low milers out there for $30k.

Im looking to Purchase a 2011 SLS with 3500 miles in the price range earlier stated in the thread. My question is what are members thoughts on depreciation? What do people thing this car will bottom out price wise? Or do some thing prices will rise?

the car is likely to continue to drop in price, imho.
because the production number is small, the depreciation will level out "sooner".
but who can really predict the end point?
if anyone has this insight, i would use their advice to pick stocks!

    I own a 2012:

    Likes:

-Ferocious torque at all revs coupled with a brutally (glorious) thunderous soundtrack.
-A factory extended warranty that cover up to 100K
-Seat positioning so close to rear axle provides lively driver feedback.
-Reliability of the 6.199 engine and electronics are spot on.
    -Gullwing doors
    -Shift speeds (after software update)
-I am unsure how many winged coupes were made, but they seem to be appreciating daily.

    Dislikes:

-The cabin is dark (black headliner) and cramped due to pyro-hinge locations.
-The climate and stereo controls look to be pulled from an E-Class
-Seats are infinitely adjustable, yet a good seating position is impossible to find.
-The ride is firmer then it needs to be.
-The nose is long and front air damn is low. You need to be careful when parking.
-The steering is light and somewhat vague.
-The windshield wipers look and operate like they are JC Whitney add-ons.
-Trunk is very small for a front mid engine (non-cab) car.

    Best,

    David

I have a 2014 SLS GT, which grows on me more almost daily:

+ the NA 6.2 engine - torque and sound
+ the build quality - completely trouble-free, and seemingly built to last
    + those doors
+ the drive - a nice middle ground between a GT and a highly strung track car
+ the transmission, much improved over the original SLS, biggest upgrade for the "SLS GT" and far closer in action to a Ferrari 458 (I have a Speciale), with which the SLS shares the basic Getrag unit but w more aggressive programming for the Ferrari

    - the size of the car - while the car "shrinks" around you once you start driving, it is without doubt a big car for a 2 door with marginal trunk volume
    - the electronic interface is basic - maybe from the E or even C class?

I was looking to purchase a second SLS GT recently, but very clearly prices have been on the upswing the last few months.

So after watching the SLS AMG market the last 2 months, coupes have been disappearing and newly listed cars selling in hours with a waiting list if 1st buyer falls thru. I bought my car 1 hour after it hit ebay, by next morning it hit autotrader and there were 6 people behind me waiting to buy it:

I just got it yesterday so I dont have a review as of yet. I can say I am very impressed, its bigger in person and the fit and finish is second to none. Oh and the sound from the 6.3 is awesome.

    jvmax,

Congratulations! I know how nice that car is firsthand because you beat me to it! I am also looking for an sls and saw LoD's ad on Autotrader and not ebay and therefore didn't know there was a buy it now. Since LoD just happens to be a few miles from my home, I just decided to go there Saturday morning to buy it. I looked it over before a salesperson approached me and decided to buy it. When a salesperson approached me, he told me it was sold already.

Enjoy and let me know if you ever decide to sell!

Thanks. I got lucky as they posted it on ebay, autotrader, and dupont registry on a Thursday afternoon. Autotrader has a 12 hour delay. I hit the buy it now 1 hour after auction was posted. Auction stated I had 3 days to pay in full. It showed up Friday morning on autotrader. I get a call on Friday morning stating they need to be paid in full asap otherwise there are 6 people behind me waiting to buy it.

This is the current market on the SLS AMG Gullwings, very few coupes listed and sell immediately when posted.

I missed out on these as I was convinced I would be able to buy one for $110-120k.

I was wrong!!! clearly on their way higher and higher. this car will remain an icon and built like the rock of Gibraltar. the sls may be the best car in the world by my standard.

I think most of us including myself thought the SLS AMG would follow typical Mercedes AMG Depreciation and you would be able to buy used for 50% or more off of sticker. With less than 3,000 total coupes and convertibles made for the US market AMG did not make too many.

Mercedes even made a SLS AMG GT3 to go racing and was quite successful:

I'm seriously thinking about getting one. One thing I hear a lot of is that the gear shifts aren't fast enough on the earlier cars... but could be improved with newer software. I think the 360 F1 is fast enough for the way I drive it (unless I'm coming out of a newer F-car, then it seems slow, but that goes away after a bit). How does it compare?

How does it compare to a 360? There is no comparison. My 360 trembles in fear when the SLS thunders to life every morning. The 0-60 is 3.5 seconds or so. That is more than adequate and almost never usable off track.

A winged SLS is a good bet at $130k+ if you can find one.

    Best,

If you guys are surprised by SLS prices...check out the SLS Black Series prices! Absolutely incredible!

Only 1 under €500k (by less than 2k) on mobile.de...sure, asking price only, but that's more than a 4 litre GT3 RS!

It's an incredible car, I love the BS but that's some price to pay...that's near enough 599 GTO money.
