Whats the scoop on the MB SLR I was just looking at eBay and there are 7 2006 cars for sale, some buy it now for 329,000 to 345,000 with only delivery miles. MSRP is 450,000 Im not in love with the looks, but it ought to be a great car so why the depreciation?
It was neither here nor there. It only comes in automatic and is too heavy to be a track car, not luxurious enough to compete with a Rolls (nor that its meant to be a limo), too expensive to run against the 599, and too similar to the folding hard top SL65. It's unbelievably fast, but for 1/2 the price, you can get a convertible version in the SL. I love it, but could NEVER justify spending what they're asking for it.
I argued this with a Mercedes rep at the Lake Mirror Auto Show for twenty minutes. Caused quite a crowd. It also didn't help that it had parked near a Carrera GT that I was using as the main source in my arguments.
Don't get me wrong, the car is out-of-this-world fast, but due to my aforementioned points, it just can't/won't sell. They tried to make it attractive to too many buyers, but by not finding a niche, they were unsuccessful IMO. "Jack of all trades, ace of none."
There's a simple win to that argument. "Oh by the way, how long has that SLR been sitting on your showroom floor?"
Mercedes made a mistake by making 2,000 units, which if they new any better they should have only built 500 -. They are stacking up like cord wood at dealers and there are many still at the ports since dealers do not want them. MB is also not offering any dealer incentives on them either, there is about $70k profit them. The dealer in KC has two, silver or black. Good looking car, but not close to $468K
Here is your problem: M-B SL 65: Net Power 604 hp @ 4,800 rpm Net Torque 738 lb-ft @ 2,000 - 4,000 rpm MSRP: $186,775 M-B McLaren SLR: Net Power 617 hp @ 6,500 rpm Net Torque 575 lb-ft @ 3,250 - 5,000 rpm MSRP: $452,750 Is 13hp--a loss of 163lb-ft, whatever the weight difference, exclusivity, and the carbon body worth $265,975 to you? Mercedes competed against themselves. True both cars are special in their own respect, but if you look at the numbers Mercedes made a boo-boo. Just MHO Edit: The curb weights are 3,734lbs for the SLR and 4,564lbs for the SL65 a difference of 830lbs.
Not much difference in performance even with the extra weight of the 65. The pics are from a friend of mine's collection who owns both and a sl55. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
So would he say it was worth the price difference? Or what does the SLR mean to him in relation to how he views the SL65/55?
Alex is right on the money. I think for the money it is just not that much of a difference. The sl65 will drop probably drop down in price in a short while as most of the new MB do.
Edward, I know your friend. I have been inspecting most of those cars for last 2-3 years. Need to go see him soon. Anthony
I heard that Mercedes contract minimum for the SLR was 4,000 units. They had made less then 1,500 and had trouble getting many to sell. I think that this is why they came out with the 722 edition, so that they can reach the contract minimum. They are supposedly coming out with a drop top version in 2008 I think, or sometime this year. I don't know why a contract minimum for a origionaly $450,000 car would be 4,000 units.....
I feel bad for people who own one now. The times that I've seen an SLR around, all I remember is how SQUEEKY the brakes were.
He went to Germany when he got the SLR for the track program mercedes offers to purchasers. I know he loves the car but I don't know if it does much more than either of the other cars performance wise and from my standpoint I'd rather have the 65 or 55. I think the SLR was more about the prestige. He puts very little mileage on any of his cars. His XJ220 has only 600 miles. He purchased a Ford GT and it has gone to the gas station and back. His 90 TR has 600 miles and his 95 456 has 800 miles on it. Forty years from now the SLR could be quite valuable so maybe it is a good purchase at $250k but nowhere near what the new price is. He also purchased two maybach's and a bentley flying spur last year so I think he likes refined horsepower. There is something about the SLR that doesn't sit right with me. The SL65 looks great, sounds great and pulls like a train.
With all the carbon bits he won't have to worry about rust! Thanks for the input good to hear that side, I've been around a guy several times who owns a SLR but I can't tell if he has it because he is a car guy or because it is expensive so I haven't discussed it with him haha thanks agian.
Ed I know him as well what a small world he spoke to my business class in highschool and sits on a board with my Father. Who would have thought all that from making cans... back on topic I would take an Sl 65 over an SLR everyday of the week Top down and 738 lbs torque! Erik
The fist time I saw one on TV I thought it looked pretty mean, but after a while it pretty much lost it's charm. Mercedes seems to want to remake every car that it sells. Most importantly, who makes a super car and doesn't offer it in manual, or at least F1 style transmission????
The SLR has buttons on the back side of the steering wheel for shifting just like all the other new AMG stuff, but I agree it needs a manual or a true sequential/F1, but so does half of the Mercedes stuff and all of the AMG stuff!! Mercedes is too fond of the auto box.
