My business partner just bought a 2007 S550, when he got it he noticed a vibration that seems to be behind the left rear seat, first thought was it needed to be balanced and an alignment, the dealer said the tire could be "out of round" saying since it's such a heavy car and since it sat in one position on the trip from Germany the tire developed a flat spot, the dealer said Dunlops were notorious for that. He left it alone since he had new 20" wheels and tires coming and figured if it was a tire problem that would fix it, upon getting the new wheels he has the same problem and it gets worse at high speed, the dealer is saying it's now due to low profile tires, not a car problem. Any thoughts? I would suspect that it must be a car problem not a tire problem if the vibration is only in the left rear, and low profile tires would not make it vibrate that much, we noticed it immediately. Thanks in advance for any help.

My dad had this problem with his 2005 s55 amg and his now gone 2007 s-600, its a axle bearing. only because it could have been driven in snow and the bearing slipped upon contact of ice at high speeds. Just tell him to go to the dealer and get the whole axle checked out. (only because there can be more stuff wrong if the bearing is out of place).

If the dealer thinks it the wheel / tire combo.... why doesn't he throw on a set of stocks and see if it goes away? The dealer could do that and put an end to the question. I doubt it will go away, but then the dealer can stop putting it off on the owner.

Mercedes is the worst! I have an S550 and from day one it has had a vibration coming from the dashboard infront of my steering wheel and I've repeatedly taken it to dealers in houston.Star and Greenway both told me that this is normal and my reply was since when is a rattle in a 106K car normal? They both tell me it is because of the "number of electronics" in the car sometimes the electronics need to "get a few miles on them"....what a croc. After this I', done with mercedes.

    Also problems with the car:

    1. my bluetooth system only works with LG and Motorola nobody told me that when I paid about $700 for my Sony 990 phone.

    2. The PCMCIA card slot, I can download music onto it and I enter in file names, but for some reason the car cannot pick it up, so I have an mp3 list with ()+++)()()( as filenames and MB Houston won't help because the PCMCIA card isn't a MB product, but wait here's the best part MB doesn't sell PCMCIA cards so what do I do just not listen to my mp3 system in my new car.

    3. My nephew is 7 and he spilled something pink in the back of my car and I went to order a 1 new carpet for the rear passenger side.....MB tells me they have a 4 week backorder on carpets for the S550

4.Finally after being promised by the salesman at MB houston that I could trade the car in at christmas if it has low miles and take a 7-10K hit and buy a new car I wanted to trade it in on an '05 Bentley GT that was 131K and the same weasly salesman offered my 85.5K for my car with 3300+ miles. I got mine when it first came out and paid 117K and 9 months later I get an offer of 30K off....10k off sticker last I checked would have been 96K

BS that it's due to low profile tires. It's shocking the dealer is putting this off on the customer. They get paid to fix it, and they should be at least somewhat concerned with the customers satisfaction rather than just getting the customer out of the door whether satisfied or not.

If it's one side and the wheels did not fix it, it's got to be something between the differential and the wheel hub. That pretty much narrows it down to the halfshaft, the hub, the bearing, the rotor/pad/caliper assembly. It could be a really warped rotor but you'd feel it during braking. So that leaves the halfshaft or the hub.

IMO demand it be fixed. If someone tried to push that off back on me saying it's normal or the result of my tires, I'd escalate that IMMEDIATELY and with fervor until I got someone with a clue and I'd be REAL PO'ed about the previous answer and looking for some azz to be kicked over it.

They are now telling him that the tires are the problem and it will be a week or so before they can get him a new set of wheels. They said that they don't have any wheels and tires like his at the dealership, however there is a s600 with exactly his tire package. The amazing thing is that the service manager seems to be inconvenienced. Don't buy a car from Elite Mercedes in Springfield, MO. I don't know what my partner is thinking, it's only a $100,000.00 car how rude of him to expect the car to not have a vibration.
