Does anyone here have expertise in, or an interest in these cars? Does anyone know of dealers or shops who specialize in them? I'm actually looking for one now, must be 4 or 5 speed, otherwise I'm open to any properly restored or authentically original cars.

Could be a start Jack: 1969 Mercedes-Benz 280SL W113 PAGODA for sale | Hemmings Motor News. Depending upon your location, and if I were in your shoes, I would contact some of your local restoration shops as they usually have knowledge of available makes and models.

Best of luck and happy hunting,
    Gregg

I am well versed in all things Pagoda. I recently sold my long ownership 1966 230SL 4 speed that was a very-very fine survivor. The market is going well on these.

If I can help I would be happy to.

Motoring investments is very good and so is the Mercedes Classics center in Irvine CA. It all depends on what your budget and expectations are. Restoring a Pagoda is big money to do it well so you are best to buy the most perfect example you can afford. I saw a PERFECT car last week at the classics center for $250K and I can assure you that it is IMPOSSIBLE to replicate that car if you were restoring one with that money in your pocket. The car was totally brand new in every detail.

    Jack,
Good info can be had at Welcome - Mercedes Benz 230SL, 250SL, 280SL Pagoda Group
Interesting that this model is now fifty years old..my how time flies..and was the car I wanted,a lot,the year I turned sixteen, the year it was introduced.
I've had mine now for twenty years, and it's fun, well some,fiddle-pharting,fixing,starting over, learning and generally admiring how well MB made cars, especially this one. I'd post pics but this iPad...
    Cheers,

    Ralph,

I would love to see some pics of your car, and from any other owners here. Sounds like we may be of the same, uh, "era"!

For years I kind of dismissed these cars, but I have a new-found respect for them, especially after talking to some long-time owners, guys who have owned some very important cars over the years. I've never heard a bad word about these cars from an owner or former owner. I'm looking forward to finding a good one.

Thanks for everyone's input. It has been very helpful.

There are a lot of cars out there for sale, and prices are all over the map. With the number of W113s available I think I'll be able to uncover one that meets my requirements and is still at a realistic price.

    Jack.

    FWIW,
I've been a little leery of this particular seller, ever since I looked at a Mercedes SL a few years back that had a pretty decent crease in one fender and a hose in the engine compartment that was a) not connected to anything and b) either broken or had failed

While it may have been a one-off issue, I would definitely recommend an in-person look if you can.

That said, last time I was there (in the fall) they had 2 or 3 SLs for sale

    Good info to know. Thanks.
Our region has had more than a few less-than-perfect dealers over the years.

Agreed! And, again, that was one experience - but it made me leery.
