So I've finally decided on what classic I am going to end up with. I have had some old 123 and 126 diesels before and loved everything about them. I have always wanted a 560 and now is the time to do it. What are the best years? Things to watch for? I remember transmissions seemed to be an issue? Could be wrong on that. Im looking for black on black or black on tan with a purchase date around may. I have multiple good mechanics and can do most work myself so not too worried about maintenance.
General rule is to get the last year, which is believe was 1999. Reality is get the car in the best condition you can find. First thing you'll want to do is replace every rubber bit you can find and then some. Another picky issue is the plastic gets brittle, and it is very expensive to replace a broken switch. As far as the motor, only problem I remember is the oil feed lines in the head can get plugged up and cause a major brain fart. But, I'm sure Hoodue will have more for you. Too bad you missed his car.
Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Yeah, mine was nice...it was Batted around pretty good...here’s a pic. Go to the site, the comments tell what you need to know and address your questions. In my mind,it’s MB’s best,ever..that’s a thing.
Image Unavailable, Please Login Here’s a better pic..go to that sale date at bat to see the comments..they raked it over pretty good..lotta nice ones too.
Image Unavailable, Please Login And here’s what the dude at Turtle Garage said about his..amble over there to see his pics too, that’s a real nice car.
And Ryan,if you’d like to see a couple of other nice examples go back to Bat and look around that week mine sold..a nice black over black sold two or three days after mine and then maybe a week after that another very nice number sm9ke silver over tan sold. If you read and absorb all the info contained in those three sales you’ll know some stuff. Look for the comments byDean Laumback, who knows a whole lot about the 126..and others too..but some aren’t as smart as they think they are..and how to closely judge a Car one has never seen, heard,or touched is quite beyond my understanding..which happens on bat,a lot. But good can come from reading those comments,so I suggest it. And if you’d like a bit more details contact me at ,hood*de at gee mail dot com. Cheers and good luck in your search, RE
I love these cars. I own a BMW 635CSi which was it's main German rival, I suppose, and while the BMW is the sportier car (IMO) the Mercedes gets the upper hand in autobahn cruising and comfort. That huge engine and quality Mercedes build makes it a great coupé, and it's getting more handsome by the day. I especially like them with the 5 spoke AMG wheels.
Image Unavailable, Please Login Ryan, here’s a pic of the headliner of a black interior sec..now this shoulda been fixed before the auction granted.. but it will give you the idea,it’s not all black..and the headliner in this model is prone to collapse..runs about 300 to 700 to fix..the sunroof in the pic needs redo too,so it’s a spice more...the model on BAT now needs it too,but not the roof, iirc,so it’s the lower price.Oh btw,the MB material is no longer available,unobtainium..but the next best thing is fine/n/dandy..it’s what I got mine done in,it’s a-ok. Cheers RE
I had one for about a month. Bought it mega cheap and flipped it. I really enjoyed the car for about 2 weeks, then it's short comings really became aparent. The car was in great shape but I couldn't get past how bloated the car felt. Sold it for a nice profit and moved on. The look tho was really amazing. Still think it's one of the best looking benz cars ever.
The original designer of the car still uses it as his daily! Definitely big but I like that. And the look of a clean black one is something no new car can come close to . Cant wait to find the right one and go on a cruise listening to my Miami vice soundtrack lol Or this lol....
Ryan, if you want a true classic, these are the last of the coachbuilt Mercedes. https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1970-mercedes-benz-280se-3-5-coupe/ No power, by today's standard, but wow, I'd take this over a Rolls or Bentley any day. Check out the interior. Edit: The SEL ain't bad. https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1991-mercedes-benz-560sel-3/
Image Unavailable, Please Login Dale,Ryan seems determined, which is a good thing, innit? That sel is da moose...did I show you the spradling oil co hard hats that came in that TX car,I’ll find a pic..neat covers. That sec I told him on sold for 35..and not bad buy or sell. Imho, this is the best MB...I put this in that Maybach thread over there. No body was impressed,I guess. Cheers,RE
