i own 3 Merak SS, one an 1975 lost the 3. engine and has a 2.7. slow is the word when compared to the others with euro headers, polished and matched ports and modified valve and valve seats. these two will spin wheels in first three gears. but difference. near lexington ky come on by any time. i will show u the difference in person. Merak is much eayier to drive and has more room inside than the V8 bora. for power i drive a Viper. scary stuff, that.

OK - so given that I was looking at a non-existant car from a closed dealer I clearly need some help finding a Merak. Any leads on the West Coast?

You'll need to at least widen your search to the entire usa to have any good choices.
I found my Merak by posting a "trade/want to buy" ad with a photo of a Merak on it. The car you are looking for is probably not advertised or on the market...but the owner could be browsing craigs list, ebay, etc. It could even be 25 miles away like in my case and be driven home after a little work! you never know.

i love when sellers post : the best original merak in the world...other than the normal few dings you expect from a car this age it is perfect!

lol...my car had zero dings and any coveted car regardless of age will have no dings either. and then he would not post actual pictures but instead file photos. what a joke!.

If the OP isn't interested, I would love to know more details about this car. Can you PM me?

I've always had a soft spot for the Merak....just a very handsome car.

These are beautiful cars..even if they're doggish in terms of performance...I saw a dropped n chopped one on I-40 two weeks ago that I couldn't photograph as I was driving. This is basically what the owner had done (considering this myself as a grocery getter):

One option for the, 'KITT' car was a merak but the division was that the public would not reconize or relate as well as the final choice. I bid on the car when it went on e bay about ten years ago and was the high bidder buzt got cold feet. It had a 350 Chevy and volvo suspension among other cobbled up parts but it still looked like a merak

    Hi

I wonder if you guys can help me out with original equipment Merak tyres

    https://www.longstonetyres.co.uk/classic-car-tyres/maserati/merak.html

I haven't done very well so far.

were they Michelin XWX or Pirelli CN12. I know they will only have fitted XWX recently because it has been in constant production.. but the CN12 came out in 1972 and i know it was OE on the Bora among other things.

Also sizes. Finding out Maser sizes is a mine feild.

does anyone have any tyre pressures too.

any pictorial period evidence is great too

This information (including tire pressures) is included in the Use and Maintenance manuals for the Bora, Merak and the Merak SS, which are available on my website: http://thecarnut.com/useandmaintenance.html

The Bora , Merak, Merak SS user manuals specify Michelin (not Pirelli) tires. This makes sense since these cars were designed during Maserati's Citroen years and Michelin was heavily involved with Citroen.

Tht is brilliant having those manuals there like that.

i have just had a quick glance at the Bora one which is a little odd. It states

    Michelin 215/70 VR15 Standard
Pirelli 215/70 VR 15 Radial (Optional)

which is kind pof weird, because they are clerly both radial, because it says VR which means V rated and R Radial.

On another page it just states 215X15 which is nice and confusing. However i do have similarly confusing fitment guides that i try to dsifer.

Agreed, that you would sort of expect Michelin XWX. Am i right in thinking that Michelin got of Citroen in 1977?

I'm pretty sure Pirelli were working there way back into Maserati with their CN12 that came out in 1972. In a new Pirelli brochure that they have just published it says "For these new sizes, the tread pattern CN12 was created. It equipped models such as the Lamborghini Miura, Jamara and Maserati Bora."

Also the tyre size on the Merak manuas are hand written on, which is a little odd, and kind of backs up why i have been finding it difficult. My books give me the impressiin that the first Merak fitted 205/70R15 front and rear. However Maserati are difficult to pin down

FWIW---I now run your new CN12s and vastly prefer them to the XWXs!
