Mediterranean diet suggestions for fish hater

    Dr. has suggested that I try the Mediterranean diet. Not a big fish lover. I like cod, flounder and other (almost tasteless) white fish. Mostly battered. Have never (seriously) had tuna, salmon or anything else that tastes "fishy". Love scallops and (cooked) shrimp.

    Suggestions for adding fish entrees to the diet without making me gag and retch?

    Tuna salads and Tilapia, as well as chicken and pork.

    You can't batter the Tilapia though.......that's not healthy.

    The only way around that and get the taste/texture is to buy whole wheat melba toast (high fiber low cal only, gotta read the box) and crush up 2 small pieces in a plastic Ziploc bag. Then take the fillet, lay out the crumbs and rub it on a plate on both sides, so the crumbs stick like a breading/dough would.

    Cook it with PAM and some lime juice.....yumm.

    Tuna is disgusting - I can't get past the smell. I never eat pork except in sausages.

    I've had Tilapia - didn't really care for it.
    Interesting - I'll have to try that. Beer batter is out huh?

    Why is your doctor advising more fish in your diet?

    My wife is not much of a fish eater, but she really likes this dish...

    Two sea bass filets
    1 slice of bread
    1 cup Feta cheese
    seasonings of your choice (I use garlic, Italian seasoning and salt)
    1 mango
    1/2 cup heavy cream

    In a blender, combine bread, Feta and seasonings until you get a consistency like bread crumbs. Pulse the blender so that the cheese does not bind everything together in a lump.

    Place sea bass in skillet on medium heat for three minutes to cook the bottom side. Remove from heat and place filets on baking sheet. Press the bread/Feta mixture onto the top of each filet. Bake at 350 degrees for approximately 20 minutes (more or less depending on thickness of filet).

    While fish cooks, dice up mango into small pieces and put in small pot on medium heat. Mash up the mango with spoon while cooking, then add cream. Simmer until sauce thickens.

    Remove fish and spoon mango cream sauce over the top. Enjoy.


    ***You can tweak the recipe to be more healthy if you would like.

    Fish wasn't the focus - it was just mentioned as being part of the med diet as opposed to red meat. One of my doctors says he rarely eats red meat and feels sluggish if he does have it. He eats fish, chicken, fruits, vegetables. Looks far younger than his age. He's about 68, maybe 70 and you would never know it.

    I posed the question in hopes of discovering more fish dishes that don't involve stuff that tastes like fish. Basically, when it comes to fish I think of battered fish and chips - that's it. Never had salmon, never had tuna, never had swordfish, mahi-mahi or much of anything else except plain white cod, flounder and maybe sole.

    You really should try Tuna Steaks or Salmon cooked on the grill. I sear them on high heat, similar to how you would cook a regular streak. Just make sure that you cook it all the way through if you don't like the fishy taste. I'm like you, don't really like the taste of fish, but if I grill it and cook it all the way through, Salmon or Tuna steaks taste great.

    You have been missing out! A good piece of fish is among the my favorite meals.

    Here's an easy one that doesn't have a "fishy" taste because of the balsamic glaze...

    Ten minutes in the oven seems to work best for me, unless you're dealing with an especially thick salmon filet.

    So you guys are saying that the fishy taste goes away? Not covering it up with sauces / glazes but it actually disappears when cooked?

    You must be talking canned. Fresh Tuna, seared and cooked rare, doesn't smell. A big mistake with tuna is to overcook, which dries it out and gives it a fishy smell and dry mouth feel.

    The thing with fish is that you need to know where to buy it, how to trim it, and how to cook it. All meats, including beef, pork and chicken, are the same.

    Take Salmon, for example.
    1) You have to know your fish monger and buy it as fresh as possible, the packaged fish in supermarket bags is usually terrible, bloody cuts.
    2) You have to either trim the skin and the "blood meat" closest to the bone before cooking (more difficult, but takes most of the fishy flavor away when cooked) or remove the skin before/while eating and take all of the grey flesh away from the pink flesh while eating (easier, but some of the flavor transfers over to the pink meat while cooking)
    3) You have to cook rare to medium rare- Overcooked fish is dry and has a rubbery mouth feel, as well as a stronger flavor.
    4) If you do the above, most/all of the "fishyness" will be gone, but if you're hyper sensitive to it, try herbs or aromatic seasonings (not too much salt-unhealthy) like herbs de provence on salmon or sesame crusts on tuna.

    For a diet? Ummm. Yeah! :)

    Hey - this is "diet" as in choice of certain foods not "diet" as in lose weight. I am a little overweight but that's not the point of this exercise!

    Thanks everyone for the advice. I think for the moment I'll stick to fish oil caps.

    Grilled wahoo and grilled dolphin (mahi mahi) is very good. I hate most seafood but really enjoy these two. I think heavy seasoning kills it, there is a local place that has some type of rosemary stuff they put on it that is really light, it is really good.

    I grew up on the Med diet. I am 41, had my cholesterol checked and my numbers are the lowest medically possible....literally the lowest for bad and the highest for good cholesterol in textbooks. Some babies are born with higher numbers.

    I hate fish as well. Cant stand the smell, scales, bones, or look.

    The key is to eat "crustaceans": Lobster, Shrimp, Crab, Oysters, Clams, Mussles any shellfish.

    Go first with some Surf-Turf: Filet & Lobster Tail, Shrimp Cocktail, Clams Casino, Oysters Rockefeller, Stuffed clams. I cant find a single human that can resist the above.

    Then once you are used to the texture paired up with other foods/seasoning/wine then go solo.

    -Steamed Lobster
    -Shrimp Scampi
    -Shrimp with Tequila Salsa
    -Crab Cakes
    -Steamed mussels
    -Paella
    -Stuffed clams
    -Tons of Italian, French, Spanish using these crustaceans


    Lots of this stuff is cheap and can be made at home. Here in NYC I can get a 2lb Lobster for $20 and boil it, with drawn butter, corn, potatoes with a cold beer and its same as $100 at Peter Lugers.



    My Mediteranean diet working......?

    -Shellfish/Crustaceans: Shrimp, Crab, Lobster, Clams, Oysters
    -Pasta with lots of olive oil & garlic
    -Grilled or roasted; chicken, fish, or vegetables
    -Red Meat 2x wk: lean Burger, Steak, skewers
    -1 Coal oven Pizza/week
    -Vegetables: min 4-6 colors a day
    -Dried Nuts & Berries: 3-4/day
    -Fibre: oatmeal & leafy stuff
    -Eggs on weekends w. bacon
    -Greek yogurt & feta cheese...tons
    -Real bread
    -Deserts, ice cream, cake at restaurants or weekends
    -No chips, cookies, candy, soda, sugary drinks; no processed/fried food
    -1 massive splurge/month: Steakhouse, BBQ, Ethnic feast, etc
    -1 imported beer/day; 2-3 Cocktails/day weekends

    Most people boil the crud out of crayfish with a bunch of herbs/spices & ruin the delicate flavor...
