I just saw a new McLaren spyder in Volcano Red here in Boston...car is stunning...however, I'm a Ferrari guy through and through... Any idea what an equivalent color shade would be in Ferrari paint?
I would say the same. In my opinion Volcano red ist the best looking color on the MP4-12C. That would be my first choice!
Fuoco (fire red) but I like fuoco a LOT better. To me, the Mac metallic red looks like it belongs on a Nissan. It just doesn't have the richness. Their orange though is first rate. Fuoco is very expensive thought which is probably why it looks better than Volcano. One color I have seen on the F12 is Rosso Berlinetta. It's a gorgeous red metallic. I think it's cheaper than fuoco too. If you know GM colors, it's similar to Crystal red.
I love that color too. The Rosso fuoco is around 28k. I would imagine the Rosso berlinetta would be the same. I went went Rosso fiorano on my 458 spider, and it was about 12k extra. All colors mentioned are very nice.
rosso maranello i'm pretty sure this is the most expensive red they sell. and very much like mclarens but deeper and more metallic still
I have the volcanic red spider and it is the most stunning paint I have ever had on a car--bar none. Nissan, Mayor??? Not sure what you were looking at. I have had and still do have a lot of exotics, but I have never gotten anywhere near the comments on paint as I have on the Volcanic red. And while I love my red 458, it is a bit embarassing to open the hood at a car show and see red overspray.
The metallic red just doesn't look unique enough for me. The Orange however really looks special. Photographs rarely do color a justice but the orange to me seems more unique. I'm not knocking red. Its just not as special, at least to me. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Please don't insult folks intelligence with 2 awful pics like that . You are better than that. If you would like, I can post picks of my red F -150 and 458 and on the forum they would like identical (except the truck has no overspray) I routinely take the 458 and Mac to car shows and park them side by side . Folks differ as to which they like better, but the one thing almost everyone likes over the 458 red is the volcanic red. And, ironically, the word they typically use is " unique." I know in your world nothing compares to Ferrari, and i admire the loyalty (and read your comparo based on one event) but you need to accept that the Mac is faster and has MUCH better paint, no matter how much it pains you. And, I love the 458.
I concur. After having the 458 Spider and the MP4 sitting in the garage together, the MP4 elite paint really is the best paint I've ever seen on a production car. Really surprising to be honest. I'm not a red person, but the V.R on the Mac is stunning.
I also like Mac's Volcanic Red. I think it's the MP4's best color. After that, I like the Orange (non metallic). I don't care for the car in their bright silver, it does little for the design and makes the car look rather dull. Regarding paint quality, the MP4's I've seen had pretty nice paint jobs. I wouldn't call them Bentley quality, but they're very good. Actually, the car's overall fit-and-finish seems quite good..it looks similar to Porsche build quality. The 458 also looks well built/finished, IMO.
Agreed and FWIW, I have seen some very beautiful metallic paints on Lexus, Hondas and other inexpensive brands. Makes you stop and think about the "true value" of some of these paint jobs. The Mac red is beautiful as is their "fire red" and I'm a Ferrari guy inside and out.
The paint shop I use is also the local McLaren authorised repairer. I had a long chat with him about the volcano paint, he has just repainted an entire MP4-12C because of 2 small dents and scratches where something fell on the car. Essentially it verges on impossible to patch repair the paint. It is an entirely new painting process where they lay down the base coat, leave it a certain time and then clear coat. The base coat undergoes a chemical reaction with the clear and changes to the final colour. There is also a question mark on the longer term UV stability of the new process. Having said that it is the most stunning, deep and vibrant paint finish that I have seen. I just had a McLaren MP4-12C for 24hrs. Very impressive.
