Is the $1,705,000 paid for the yellow F1 market correct? I've always heard the F1 described as a million dollar car and I figured that they are worth a little more than that ($1.15 - $1.3) from what I've read but are they really approaching the $2 million mark these days?

it really would not surprise me. just think about it, how often does one pop up into the market? we're lucky if there's one for sale at any given time.

No. It wasn't market correct at the time. Especially for the condition it was in

Actually it probably was. My friend and business partner has recently been offered well north of 2 million for his basically stock car. I think 3 million in fewer than 5 years is probable.

$3 million for a standard road car? I'm not seeing it unless he has less than 300 miles or something on it. I think you're talking about the Costa Rica one, which had very few miles on it when it was new.

I know the Don Wallace #073 car was offered $2 million, but was turned down. I wouldn't go by auction results to see the market. It's not the "market" deciding the price of the car. It's just a couple guys with a lot of money bidding til they "win." And don't forget the auction commission tabbed onto the price at the end.

Ask Erik what he thinks, I would like to know since he has as good a handle as anyone on it.

On a car that shows up for sale so rarely - I'd warrant auction prices as the market, given how the odds of finding one for sale are, that WILL drive the prices up at an auction sure, but that reflects its rarity.

Maybe for the market for that particular car, but I wouldn't categorize all of them the same. Heck, even that car had trouble selling for a similar price at SVAG's dealership for a LONG time. They even had offers for the F1 at their store for more than they got after paying RM Auctions the seller commission.

Just because two buyers can bid the price up on a car at will doesn't mean the rest of the cars out there go up the same. That one went for too much and you can also attribute that to the % commission tacked on. The person who bought that particular F1 is repainting the car white anyway so they have more than enough money to waste at an auction. It wasn't even that good of condition for an F1 since it wasn't taken care of in Brunei.

The collection in Brunei makes me sick! Such marvelous cars just sitting there to rot.

The typical owner of a McLaren F1 has "more than enough money to waste" on anything he wants, I would imagine. ;) The paint on this car is a drop in the bucket. And the commission is part of the price. . . it's not like the buyer didn't think of that while bidding. Or at least we hope not :D

And for this type of car, two guys with a lot of dough is the whole market. I think there were only 64 F1's built, and most of these will probably never be sold in their owners' lifetimes. These aren't Toyota Corollas :)

F1 sold in the past year or two:

#013 - silver, I think this is the one Fchatter RTB bought recently
    #014 - yellow F1 at RM auction
#028 - red F1 sold by SVAG (sellers of #014)
#036 - light blue F1 now in New Orleans. Sold by Taylor & Crawley
#038 - candy orange F1 that Fchatter RufMD was looking at
#051 - green F1 sold by KS Autohandel. Sold two times in the past year I believe.
#053 - white F1 sold through mobile.de. Appeared at car show in the UK
#068 - the silver one that belonged to former LM3 owner (a poster here knows this car ;))
    #075 - (supposedly that #, not confirmed) orange F1through mobile.de
58 F1 GT - longtail road car supposedly traded hands in Japan
LM3 - bought by Ralph Lauren
13R - LARK F1 sold by Maranello Motorsports. Used to be in Japan, but sold to Europe through Australia
16R - Fina F1, now orange. Sold by Maranello Motorsports. From Australia to UK.
23R - Sold by KS Autohandel. Fina longtail
24R - Sold by Taylor & Crawley. EMI longtail (Mr. Bean)
11R appears still for sale and possibly 07R.

Those are just the ones I know about that sold within the past two years (most within the past year). There are some I know I don't know about. Some weird purple one in Mexico was recently discovered. It actually looked pretty nice besides the wheels. :)

Think about it. 100 of them made. A dream, the number ONE, of thousands of enthusiasts. THE car to own when you have done the Carrera GT, the SLR McLaren, the Koenigsegg CCX, the Ferrari Enzo and all the other hypercars.

If you ask me this is the kind of car that will never loose value because of the legend status it has. Anyone can buy a Enzo (until they all have been crashed) but buying a McLaren F1 is four (!!) times the exclusivity.

I know there are much more pictures of McLaren F1 hanging on the bed room walls of dreamers than any other supercar.

That said I would get a Carrera GT and a F40 instead of it. But for a lot of people with all of the above mentioned supercars in their garages the next goal is the McLaren.

"You have a Enzo, SLR and a Carrera GT!? WOW!!" vs. "You have a McLaren F1????? HOLY ****!!!!!!!!!!" Two different reactions :)

Drivingnirvana good post. I think the McLaren will always be one step ahead of all these other super cars even including the Veyron. Simply for what it has accomplished in its racing career. Thats a title no modern supercar has to this day.

Anyone know more about the sale history of #038 (orange)? I was lucky enough to have the chance to explore the car when it still called Scottsdale its home. I think the AZ-owner sold it in 2005, and it looks like it may have been sold again?

One thing it has over the other cars, it was designed not as the ultimate "supercar", or ultimate "racecar", but as the ultimate "road car". The whole intent was to create an experience beyond anything else. The Veyron is the closest thing to ever match it - however McLaren got it right staying with a normally aspirated V12 - The sound of a Veyron is...I've never heard any video or sound clip of one that makes me go wow! Whereas the screaming large displacement V12 of the McLaren is another story.

Yes, it sold a couple years ago from AZ to Georgia. Then it sold again in the past year. RufMD created a thread about the sale and I believe it sold through ebay.

Edit: I should add that I think McLaren F1 prices are going up in USD because of the declining value of the dollar. The GBP is nearly double the USD and the Euro is still over 1.3 times that of the dollar. Imagine if you bought a ton of Euros back when it was 0.8 of the dollar. Trips to Europe would be much cheaper. :(

I don't believe such a machine resides in New Orleans; however I know of one spotted near a Red Pole...

    My mistake. Baton Rouge. :)

Nice pic! Do you happen to have anymore? That's #018 with the LM spec engine.

Edit: You can add 27R, the longtail GTR, to that list I wrote up. I think it's already sold through Cars International within the past 6 months.

Isn't this the same one that Bentley of Silicon Valley sold for $1,705,000 and then sold at the RM auction for $1,550,000?

I'm not sure what you mean by the first figure. That it sold by Silicon Valley and then sold again at RM? Silicon Valley Auto Group sold the car at the RM Auction. I don't have the figure off the top of my head, but I think it was the $1.7 million one (not sure if before or after commission was added).

silicon valley auto group didnt sell it for 1.7 it went for something much lower like 1.45 or 1.5 i believe, due to some negotiating on the condition of the car, mechanically and cosmetically I saw it myself and it looked ok. I am glad I have seen the McLaren now, quiet sick that car.

now i need to sleep big day tomorrow on 4 hours of sleep
