Last month a 98 F355 GTS with 23k miles sold for $166k (including buyer fee). The 575 seller seems justified not letting it go for $211k. But then again, maybe the F355 was an anomaly? BaT prices have been trending higher almost across the board the last few months.

I got outbid at £60K. I was comfortable up to £65,000 incl fees above that I don't see the value considering the way the car is being sold.

I don't like the current trend for lots of motor traders posing as "brokers" to circumvent the legalities of being a trader.

You can see the questions I posed on the sale in the bidding section. These along with some conversation on Pistonheads lead to the owner of Collecting Cars (Ed Lovett) phoning me this week to discuss some of my comments. It was an interesting conversation. They also clearly monitor the forums.

This particular car has been in storage for three years (the owner being in Thailand), with these people

    https://www.v-management.com/#sales

They claim they are not dealers or motor traders (despite advertising that could easily be considered trading), they are simply providing a "service" for one of their clients in managing the sale of his vehicle on an auction platform that also takes no legal responsibility in the sale or aftersale of the vehicle.

So in short, you have a car being sold by a company that are not a trader or dealer who are also not the owner of the car. On a platform that has less comeback than eBay. What could possibly go wrong? Based on that I'm happy to have a punt at somewhere in the £60k's - any more than that is too much risk for me personally.

All that said - there's a massive gap between that number and the £90K+ that most cars seem to be advertised for - except the Justin Banks car - which I keep looking at (lots I don't like about it but the asking price is sensible).

V interesting, as always! Have you seen the JB car in the flesh? I remember you mentioning the aftermarket speakers... I can’t un-see them now.

I really ought to go and see it, I only live half an hour from Tunbridge Wells where he's based.

I was looking at it again last night on line, it's going to need new door cards or at least retrims to get those speakers out. The seat centres need a colour change. That might be enough as I don't think the parcel shelf and headliner would look wrong in blue with sabbia seats, it's just the seat centres that make it an overload.

A pair of door cards £995+ vat + retrim

I don't like the Barchetta alloys, which might work in my favour as they seem to be valuable items. I see them advertised for five figure sums when they come available - but like the cars, advertising and selling prices could be worlds apart.

A new old stock full set of standard wheels for the 550 can be bought from Eurospares for 895+vat for the full set. See here:-

    https://www.eurospares.co.uk/parts/ferrari/550-maranello/brakes-wheels/wheels-19874

I find the standard 550 wheels far more elegant. I do prefer the 19" modulars on the 575 though.

So with a bit of man maths, selling the split rims could cover the costs of the alterations I'd like done and a new set of standard wheels and tyres?

huge prices recently also for gated 430s on BAT. Despite gated 430s being available for less, from dealers, with warranty. It’s as if some buyers of late manual Ferraris think they are only available on BAT. Strange.
I do have a couple of gated 430s and a gated 575 and I have to say if BAT was in the UK I would be consigning one of the 430s there immediately!

I believe the buyers’ competance will never be as well informed about the cars and the market for them as our Fchat «car nerd total knowledge» here.... I mean If I wanted to buy a yacht or watch as a normal guy, I would never have the same knowledge as a ten year long owner etc. And because of that I could be willing to bid higher than neccesary to get what I want if I want it a lot. That is why these prices vary from time to time because people have variations in equity. If I had 10 billion on my account and want a mint low milage 575 manual (or any other car for that matter), it is quite irrelevant what the price is. May sound stupid, because everyone want to do a good deal. It is just that what is expencive and what is cheap always have to be seen in the light of how much money that is availible...

Do you think it’s because people are intimidated to go to dealers? Sounds silly, but I wonder...

Looks like it also needs the sticky plastic doing.

As I'm sure you know, it has been for sale for a long time (initially April to July 2017, then relisted from December 2018 to July 2019 with Autostorico then June onwards with Justin Banks). Not that I know of anything wrong with it, I hasten to add.

Actually this was one that I missed, I didn't know it had been for sale for that period of time. Did you make a note of the asking prices over that period?

Yes, of course. In 2017 it was listed for £999,999 (sic) and 49,456 miles. Either one digit too many or an attention-seeking price. Don't know which. Then £99,950 and 49,456 miles from Dec 2018 to July 2019 with Autostorico. With Justin Banks £74,995 -> £72,955 -> £69,995.

I think much of the problem is you're not actually dealing with the dealer, in so much as in most cases the car isn't their stock, it's on consignment.

The dealer has often given the owner an unrealistic valuation of their car simply to get on the books/premises so when you make an offer it's generally not what the owner is expecting.

Personally I don’t think that sounds silly. An auction is fun and exciting and easy. And so many dealers are a pain to deal with, or intimidating, or both = when I was younger I would get intimidated by dealers who were dumb and knew less than me but still had the schtick. Though of course, some dealers offer genuine protection which an auction doesn’t.

Sold for £76k. Quite a healthy price when you consider commission.

Was going to say the same. 46000 mile 550 in argento, auction, no warranty, £76,000.

    https://collectingcars.com/for-sale/2000-ferrari-550-maranello-1

that’s quite strong. It suggests a dealer sale of 10k more, so a dealer asking price in the nineties. For a high mile car.

but each sale is just a sale.

I wonder if Justin Banks is looking at this and scratching his head why he can't sell a car as a dealer at £69,995 yet someone buys one blind for over £80,000 with commission on line as a private sale.

What’s his reputation? There are dealers and then there are dealers...

Also, if it’s been sitting around and not driven for years, as jtremlett pointed out.

Then again, sounds like the one of Collecting Cars also has been in storage for the past three years...
