I am considering this car from Jumbo luxury that several of us mentioned on here before. It is a manufacturer's buyback due to a seatbelt? issue and also has right rear quarter paintwork. I want a feel from some of you experts on whether I should simply avoid the car, or just understand the due diligence required. Price is decent, but only if it doesn't need more work. I want a car I won't feel bad about putting miles on. What do you know about any FF's that Ferrari "bought back?" What title / resale implications would it have? Here is the carfax... The asking price seems in line for a car WITHOUT accident/lemon history, given 20K+ miles. I would do more research if I were you. I think lemoned cars typically trade 30-50% below standard prices at auctions.
I've wondered about that FF too. The seatbelt helper mechanism gets confused easily. I can see how this gadget could go haywire or do things that the owner never considers 'SOP'. What's strange is that it was 'lemon lawed' after 3 years in service and 3 different owners. Surprising that a car could get a buyback from the MFG so far into the warranty period. Paintwork could be nothing ... so many cars get painted and we're oftentimes none the wiser. Especially when damage occurs during delivery to dealer. They have it painted and so long as the damage is below a threshold - they don't have to report it at all. Assuming you could get a killer deal on the car (and some warranty) - I wouldn't personally let the lemon status hold me back. Just recognize that you'll have a tough time reselling it with the branded title.
Well all I know is it usually takes an act of Congress to get a manufacturer to buy back a car. I would have to know ALL the details of the problems of this car that got the manufacturer to take it back. Then I would offer way, way below the asking price. You can always negotiate up a little bit from there.
Hold on now. A lemon is not a car with 20,000 miles ... a lemon is a newer car. I'm guessing what happened here was a pissed off 3rd owner when a transmission needed to be redone. It can be $20,000. You need to know more about the car. Paintwork on a small ding, is not a huge thing. A new transmission is a POSITIVE. The seatbelt thing is not a big deal, many people have had it fixed. The 2012 with 49,000 was asking 164,000. It's a 150 car IMO assuming the lemon situation was something like a tranny.
Eric the real question is why this car? You love the build? There are many 2012s out there for under 200 with under 20k. Are you paying cash? Financing wont change a lot from 150-190.
The build is "ok". The main reason was if I could save a bunch of money up front and not have the worry about putting miles on it. They had it on mannheim for $149.5k., not sure how much lower they would go. Might consider my 09 612 OTO in trade (FF + Cash for my OTO), but that is a well sorted, sought after two owner car with all records, books, tools, etc that is worth between $170-200k realistically. Right year, colors, OTO, etc. I am getting more paranoid these days to put miles on it. If I could get it for maybe $30k + FF for my OTO I may consider it. Although it will make it a bear to resell later, even at lower price.
Walk away Walk away to Dixie land: don't have any regrets Eric tread carefully as sometimes the rind on the Lemon is even more bitter when you stand on it
I think it would be crazy to buy a lemon buyback especially in an exotic where repairs out of warranty can be crazy expensive. If you could get it Ferrari certified and get a warranty then only at a low enough price you would be ok with loosing everything. The reason I say that is I can't imagine a fifth buyer buying this car once you want to sell.
Yeah. I am getting the message loud and clear. Think I may wait for a nice 2013 with a pano roof in some crazy color combo that no one else wants haha
Is it really that painful from 150 to 190? I was looking at 185 and went up to 255. Stretched but not too bad.
That's 40k I could put towards some other fun car I've always wanted. Like an 1980s 911 SC turbo look with a whale tail haha.
BTW Brian, $255k ish now can get you a near new 2015 with <1000 miles! Ferrari FF 2015 Ferrari FF Beuatiful One Onwer Only 974 Miles | eBay
Clean ... but no, ugly. no LED wheel, no vent seats. And I like daytona seats. They have some FFs previously with a history also ... be sure and check that on this one.
I agree with 95.73967% of your post, and 150's all the $$. The one thing that your a hair incorrect about is a hi mile car not being a lemon, my Jetta lemoned at 30k miles. Problem started at 22k miles. That's a rare thing, and ur most likely correct it ain't lemon thing. But hi mile cars can lemon as well on the rare occasion. Always enjoy ur posts, Eric
Good point as well, that 5th+ buyer can be difficult to find on a car that's a handful of years old. On a Enzo, F40 it's not near as bad, but 1-2 owner cars always fetch more $ & sell easier. This car isn't a plan, I have a friend who bought a Hurricane Sandy car on a salvage title. It was in 18-22" of water I'd guess, he got it at a good price(I can't mention the specifics-3 pedal newer Ferrari-rare car) probably 50% of what he could retail it for now. What's the problem??? He fixed the leather damage & carpets easy enough. Then the fuse box's and relay switchs (if I recall correctly) I think that's what they were called. Then the real problem started the instrument cluster shut off, it's not a old analog or digital like the new cars, it's a 10 year old car. Car ran fine but no-zero gauges, radio was iffy. On and on and on. $10,000 for a new factory cluster-not installed, that's double digit % of his purchase price. He ended up with a rebuilt cluster, nope didn't work or got zapped by the new switches/fuses-who knows??? Now he is on the 2nd cluster, seems to be holding up. At the end of the day yes he is sitting good in the car cause it's a manual version of a car that only a handful are manual. But I'm not into all that drama, if I had to go thru all that, I'd just get pissed when I saw the car and the whole idea is to be happy and enjoy cars(unless it's your business) for me I want my cars to be a happy place. Not a argument, battle with equipment and constant aggravating problems.
Check out excell auto in bocas black FF... They are good peeps and ive bought 5 cars from them over the past almost 3 years.. Jumbo actually has my old supersports bentley from Excell Anyway the black car is no stories, mint, I drove it.
