That's the Emirates Palace Hotel. It's not a house.

It's a hotel? Oh now I am sad. I was actually day dreaming on what floors I would put the playboy bunnies in.

I could never live in a big house. It would seem sooo unhomely.

I agree 100%. I'll take a carefree life over an impressive house any day of the week.

I will admit that big homes are fun to look at.

Can you build new houses/estates in London? Where are the new mansions with land built in that area?

It's pretty hard in central London as there's not much land left and there's also a strict planning permission. A lot of the new development in recent years seem to be by the Thames.

In the UK it is possible to see the prices of all houses sold over the last five years

    try this website: http://www.houseprices.co.uk/

For example enter: wycombe square, london

Then click the map, you can look around and see how much any house costs

Although for some reason the Mital place (from the 1st page here) isn't shown - think it sold for £70,000,000

No privacy at all in England? Is it legal to walk on another person's property?

That's illegal (I think). But watch out if you are buying a large estate in the countryside as there's a legislation that allows country ramblers to have the right to access and freedom to roam across your estate.

What if you put walls around your estate? Isn't Surrey an expensive countryside place, where Updown Court was sold? How far is that from the ritzy West End? Is it possible to build new homes in England, or do you have to buy old ones?

That's not great but it's not gauche. It's just your garden variety Italian villa transplanted to CA or FL and enlarged. The architecture is easy.

But maybe that's what this gent wanted.

    Forza,

Here is a Castle house in Lexington KY with 53 acres of land. The House burnt down not too long ago and is going to be rebuilt by a lawyer out of California and might be turned into a Hotel. I think the price of the house and land is around 3.5 million. http://www.dupontcastle.com/castles/martin.htm
Also there is the Biltmore House in Asheville NC. I think its the largest House in America but its a tourist attraction which is not privately owned anymore. It sits on a 8,000 acre area near the Blue Ridge mountains. http://www.biltmore.com/explore/house/virtualtour.shtml

I love the grass thatched roof cottage in Beverly Hills. The one with the curved flowing roof lines. Reminds me of a Gingerbread house. Bigger is not always better.
