Unless I'm mistaken, on some Ferrari's, parts like valves are made out of titanium.

So, just out of curiosity, has anyone ever used a smaller Ferrari part (valve or something) to have a jewelry store forge it into a wedding band?

I have another 8 months of freedom (hah!) and was thinking it would be something to think of, as in; "this wedding ring came from a Ferrari" :)

If it's a stupid idea, no worries, happy to hear criticism too.

If she is a petrol-head, then go for it. If not, you could be in trouble.

She knows how to drive stick, and seems to take turns even quicker than me in our Lotus Elise (the red beast is "my" toy and she may only drive it supervised). So... mmmmmaybe?

I was fortunate enough to have my wedding rings made in titanium from the supplier to Ferrari. The process required the help of a personal friendship but they made me my wedding bands from the special alloy produced exclusively for the parts of the F1 engine. Very cool and my wife and I really treasure them.

I wish you the best of luck in your project and I am certain you can have some titanium Ferrari part re-machined into wedding bands. Wheel bolts come to mind as a good and inexpensive source for high quality 'Ferrari' material.

Just for fun I made a replica of my own wedding ring out of titanium. I simply turned it on a lathe from a hunk I bought from McMaster.com. It would be very easy to machine one from a valve.

Would there be any recommendations on which Titanium part to use, so it's not like the most expensive part of an F-car?

That sounds cool, but I recommend using soft metals like gold. In the off chance you injure your finger and it gets swollen, it's easier to cut it off. I wouldn't recommend tungsten or other hard metals. Not all hospitals have cutters that can take it off quickly so you can really permanently injure your finger.

No, too many bad experiences with soft metals like gold.

Got married several months ago. She didn't want me to spend a lot of money on ring(s) & I didn't want to spend any on cheap, generic junk.

Although I don't wear any jewelry (incl. watches), few days before our nuptials I spent a Sunday morning at the shop making a matching and fitted pair of rings out of some spare hardware & parts for vintage Ferraris I'm working on. Materials included aluminum, nickel plated steel & stainless.

Not only she liked them, but all her friends and siblings seemed to approve my design idea & execution. Some even asked if I'd be interested designing/making something similar for them or their relatives in the future. No, I'm not.

    Hi Heikki

So I may be able to point you in the right direction on something similar.....

Do you know what an SR71 Blackbird is? If not google it, arguably much Kooler than any Ferrari ever made.....

Anyhow there is this guy in the states that makes parts from bits of old SR71's

I have a very small keychain with a bottle opener on it that I keep on my man bag, but he does make titanium wedding rings from SR71 parts and they do look pretty Kool, and the metal has been flown at Mach 6!

Sorry Heikki, prefer not to since they are unique one-off pieces I made for her and sharing could potentially lead to someone copying them... Thanks for understanding.

Titanium is difficult to "forge." It is best machined. But why pay a machinist big bucks to turn one from bar stock? You don't want to reinvent the wheel. The SR71 proposal looks like a good alternative if you are seeking a ring with a "story." Also, there are plenty of ring suppliers who fabricate attractive titanium offerings.

badboy: yeah, I know the blackbird, and as awesome as it is, I'm more into cars.

Thanks to all for the follow-up ideas :)

My guess is that the OP has had a lifelong passion for Ferrari and a long held dream of owning one....something that, presumably, cannot be said about the SR71.

I think the idea of Ferrari jewelry is kinda cool make out of parts. I would do this as a Christmas gift not a wedding ring.

While technically the rings I made were not from parts specifically manufactured by or for Ferrari, they are made of component pieces and hardware I use for restoration of vintage Ferrari and other vintage cars.
The most special element in her and her friends/siblings view (and mine too) was that they're designed and hand-crafted by me for her from materials I've been working with for decades. Cool & unique looking result was "the icing on the cake".

I work with metals and it''s true that in case of a hand injury, cutting off a titanium ring would be extremely difficult job for the doctors. You could use aluminium from an FCar and have for example few diamonds sunk into the ring. Would be easy to engrave the date too.
