I have found a Cali I like on the East Coast. I am going to have FoLI do a PPI. Do I make an offer to the used-car dealer before or after the PPI has been completed?
Personally, I’ve never made an offer before the PPI. The PPI is decisive to have an idea of what value to put forward. Making an offer before the PPI is a bit like flying blind, imvho. Kind regards, Nuno.
Should I put a deposit down before the PPI? The car is a 2014 Cali with 3,600 miles and all service done by FofLI. Wouldn't the fact that I am shelling out $350 for a PPI be used as a tool for the used-car dealer against me--meaning, oh he already shelled out $350 to have the car inspected so if he makes a low offer we will not accept it because we know he just spent that money?
Just do what you think is best, don't overthink it. Personally, I'd offer them something before with the understanding that it's dependent upon an inspection. That way if my offer is no good to them, I don't waste my time or theirs.
Time was, gentlemen would agree on a price and then take the car to a mechanic. Then after agreeing to what needed to be done, the buyer and seller would split the costs 50-50. Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat
This is what I was thinking... This seems fair. I know....I know....but this dealer is a flake....and knows nothing about the car, including which options it has. Steve @ Boardwalk searched for the VIN and gave me all the options and it specced out at like $255k!!!! Only service issues include the top being adjusted in 2014 and a piece of leather replaced in 2015 due to shrinkage--all done at FofLI. Still has one factory service left in Sep 2020....so you are right....but I'm either flying out to look at it or paying a dealer $350 to do it for me.... For example....look at these photos.....it looks like it has had a hard life.....which is why I want to either see it or have a simple PPI done. On previous purchases, I personally have agreed to a price with the seller prior to doing the PPI, price assumes no bad surprises from the PPI (otherwise indeed you show one card and lose leverage). This allows you to keep the option to renegotiate if something wasn’t disclosed
$350 sound cheap for a ppi FoLI is reputable so I have to believe they know what to do Except there may be levels of ppi . Find out what they are going to check, will they inspect paint depth all around? For $350 I'm sure they're not doing compression test. You are buying from an independent dealer so they can't sell you a power warranty , do you have a dealer near you that you will use that could sell you a warranty , if you choose? Can you share a link to it , or rather not?
Yes, I live less than 10 mins from Ferrari of Scottsdale for a Power Warranty Inspection. I do not feel there is a need to do a compression check on a 2014 Cali with 3,600 miles. hence the basic PPI. (Conversely, back in 2008 I DID do a full PPI with compression check on my F355). I'm just concerned about overall condition, RHT, motor mounts, drivability.... https://www.baronauto1.com/vdp/15973500/Used-2014-Ferrari-California-2dr-Conv-for-sale-in-Roslyn-Heights-NY-11577
double edge sword If I ppi a car I want to buy and I am exposed to $$$ , I do not want the owner changing their mind and not selling it to me or selling it to someone else. I want to lock in that if all is good , I'm getting the car . No owner is not going to agree right of refusal to a stranger unless there is an incentive or assurance that I'm not wishy washy. otoh , I don't want to commit to buying a car if the ppi comes back bad and if I deposited money I want it back . Therefore an agreement needs to be made as to the conditions of a bad ppi vs non-issues. No bad ppi , I have to buy or lose my deposit . Small issues should be worked out before offer . Major issues I can refuse or re-negotiate. Need to define .
nice car. seller looks decent , iow not a fly by night operation. I did not have motor mount issues in '10 or '15 cali. '14 calis probably well sorted out before new models in '15 came along . I think they have upgraded engine or suspension in '13. My car group buddy loves his '14.
I saw a burned-out transmission on a (non-Ferrari) car with <6K miles just this month. Some people just abuse the hell out of a car, new or otherwise.
the condition of the interior concerns me with 3600 miles. Mine had 36000 miles and the interior wasnt that scratched up
I wouldn't buy without seeing it first. Then make an offer pending a successful PPI.... If it has issues, you can negotiate getting them addressed that too!
If interior wear doesn’t seem compatible with mileage, that alone is worth a PPI if you want to rest 100% assured. Plus, that’s a very low mileage mark, which would make me assume the car sat for extended periods of time. At the very least, all things made of rubber should be inspected, from tires to hoses to window seals. Kind regards, Nuno.
This is my primary concern with this vehicle!! The car DID have its annuals done every year at FoLI, though....so they may have been hard on the interior while sitting....or maybe used chemicals to clean the interior that caused the sticky. The seats seem to look in line with a 3,600 mile car, though....all good and no creasing. In a normal day I would hop on one of the frequent daily flights between PHX-NYC.....look at it...and fly home the same day. But nonstop flights right now are almost non-existent to NYC....ugh....I fly a few times a month so getting on a plane last-minute is normal for me. hah I am going to have a PPI done no matter what as $350 is a small price to pay in this situation. Still trying to figure out a deal, though. This car dealer is literally the flakiest car dealer I have ever seen...doesn't return emails....calls.....then sends out of focus photos when I ask for a close-up of things like a seat... They just dropped the price of this $10k, so I think I may just lowball them the see how badly they want to get rid of this car. It is the 2nd most expensive vehicle out of 125+ listed on their website. They have a 2016 Mulsanne selling for more. Maybe offer $100k? LoL.....damn....that would be a steal at that price if if passed PPI.....hahahha Im thinking $105k would be realistic....but hell.....the worst they could say is No.....
Something doesn't look right. See under ac vent picture, leather looks like it is separating. There is a 9, xxx mile '13 for sale at wide world in Nanuet, ny for 103. They are a oem dealer, car is certified, I think at that value the Baron one not super unless you can get for under 100. But still why is some parts extra worn. Even see the weatherstripping at door looks worn. If you look at vents for the '13 you will not see separation of leather. Idk about it now.
I guess I've been lucky. I have purchased 3 Ferraris with no PPI. My fourth was today. But the owner was extremely helpful and forthcoming with known issues so I felt very comfortable doing it with no PPI.
For this alone, I'd pass. If they're this much fun to deal with now, what happens once they have your money? Or, heaven forbid, you buy the car and something goes wrong with it early on? T
FYI - I had the worst PPI ever at FofLI. You should find a reputable independent in the area instead...and, perhaps, a better example of the model you are after.
