We all know there are known issues with the 355, the manifolds, the valve guides (on some cars),etc. It seems that once the known issues are addressed the maintenance costs aren't really that bad (relative term). I think the confusion and perceived high prices come from us including the costs of these one time fixes as maintenance. As an example, I don't see a situation where I'll be replacing the headers every 5 years hence we shouldn't probably categorize those as maintenance.

That's a really good point. But don't forget the age if the cars we are talking about here. "plan" for 5-10 per year (assuming 20 k miles per) but maybe you get lucky

I fully agree with this estimate after owning my car for 11 years and putting 42,000+ miles on it in that time frame. However, if there is a good year that you do not spend this much, put that money in the bank, because the cost of the following year's repairs will make up for it.

My total tally is $65,000+ that includes all maintenance, oil, tires, etc. but does not include any paintwork or rim repairs (that are inevitable if you actually drive your car).

The 95 I got this summer had 45K in repairs in the last 6 years. That is everything that had to be done valve guides, manifolds, headers, sticky, etc, etc. , I am hoping that my bills will be much less.

Once the major stuff is fixed - budget minor stuff every year then a major every 5 years.

It's a 95 so no CEL problems possible. Been through two emissions sniff tests with no problems. I recently took my Tubi muffler off and install a stock muffler. Checked the cats. They looked like new. I got a very good deal on them. Not sure that price would stick today. Talk directly to Nouvalari USA.

    Be afraid. Be very afraid.
Seriously, it's a Ferrari, not a Prius. You're going to have to spend some money if you want to drive it and not just rub it with a diaper.
I just bought a "perfect/needs nothing" gated B and dropped $7K before it even entered my garage. I asked my mechanic to get it "road ready": tires, fluids, etc. I expect I'll do the same in a year, or sooner . . . the CEL light just came on.
I suppose what I'm saying is "If you have to ask . . ."
Still, it is money well spent. I've had a lot of cars, including some whacked out stuff, and the 355 is the best effing thing I've ever run. When she's warm and the day is pleasant, there's nothing better.

I bought my car this year. 37K miles, just had major done, tubi headers/exhaust, clutch, most stickies done, interior leather perfect, paint very good. I thought it was very well sorted. Problem was, the owner never drove it after the work, and I had 2 or 3 grand in getting it right. I can't imagine what I would have paid at a dealer.

With my wallet, this car would get old fast if I couldn't wrench it myself. To tell you the truth, half my enjoyment is learning the car. The other halff is shifting at 8.5K rpms!

The question of "how much is a engine out" cannot be answered without more details...ie dealer or independent shop?

But, you are likely looking in the neighbourhood of $8000-$11000

There should be a 348/355 cost of ownership sticky thread.... LOL

Bottom line, it's a car that while generally reliable and not cost prohibitive to own, can quickly become cost prohibitive when things go wrong. Prepare accordingly. Put aside $5k per year for maintenance and you should be in good shape even when things go wrong.

(assuming $8k/3 years in major service at a minimum, doubling that budget keeps you pretty safe).

FWIW, the mech I normally use has a 'normal' 5.2 engine out service for <$9K; this includes a number of "while we're in there" items. I planned on $12K, and was off my $39. (It had been 5 years since last was done, but that was performed by a shop to sell the car; not by an owner wanting to have it done right.)

I bring my service history book with me all the time so my mechanic can go over it and sees what the car needs and also give me a ball park figure on the work.

In 11 years i have spent more on extras than maintanence. I say the longer you keep it the cheaper it gets if you fix things properly. Probably less than 1500 per year not including engine outs. Provided you drive it 4 to 5 hundred a month.

I have noticed less driving more money seems like

Forgot to mention original f1 pump for now!!!
