I apologize for asking such a n00b question but, what model Ferrari did Magnum PI drive? Are they hard to find? Should this question have been posted in the technical section?

    Thanks!

Oh you are so gonna get teased! Anyway, welcome to Fchat :)

It was a 308 GTS IIRC, they are not at all rare and good examples are about $40k.

    Thank you!

Are the 308 GTS's a good model, or was it all just eye candy for a television show?

Also, I read somewhere that Ferrari owners could pick up a "special" golf bag that fits behind the seat (I think?). If so, is the bag model specific, or one-size-fits-all?

Again, sorry for the stupid questions, I've just always loved the looks of Magnum's car and now that I'm making a little money I thought I'd look into them.

Check out the buyer's guide at http://birdmanferrari.com/

Birdman is a guru here on Fchat.

Also, there's a 308/328/Mondial section down below here that is full of us nuts.

    PS: you have a PM

There's no way you're getting anything behind the seats in a 308 GTS. I have gotten a small golf bag in the trunk behind the engine (not mine, I don't play, so can't tell you details)

308 GTS (topless version-best in nice climates) or GTB's, are great fun to drive, they handle like go-carts and have enough power to be exciting on winding roads.
They are also fantastic Eye Candy ! One of the most famous and beautiful Ferraris of all time.
If you like to tinker on cars, the 308 is probably the easiest to work on and most affordable to own.

That link shows a 328 as one of the 'Magnum PI Ferrari Pics'. I thought all the cars he drove were from the 308 series???

Ahhh, the irony of suggesting a vote for somebody who openly aims to take away his ability to buy the car he's asking about.

The questions were/are legit. I cannot see how posting on FerrariChat.com could amount to much of an advertisement for a political candidate. Surely, there are better ways to reach the masses. It has been suggested that I look into changing my screen name as to help those readers wearing tin-foil hats who see conspiracy behind every action. I will look into doing that.

Obama and I are both rich black men who already own nice things (including vehicles). He does not want to stop me from buying Magnum PI's car. In fact, I would imagine he would be proud of my ability to take such action.

I agree, I don't think that 328 is suppose to be there.

I don't know why they put that photo there. Hmm!

Huh?? What in the world gave you the idea that Obama has weighed-in anywhere on anyone's right to own any particular car? Didn't see anything of the sort on his web site. Let's stick to cars, okay? Besides, I can think of lots better ways to hustle votes for the candidate of your choice than via a screen name- give the guy a break.

Such a politically-loaded screen name opens up a political trail of breadcrumbs. I doubt it's the target-specific goal of preventing the aquisition of a certain car - it's the redistribution of what we work to achieve that accomplishes that.
I consider raising certain taxes for the expressed purpose of paying for socialism to be more than a little counter-productive to trying harder, working smarter than the guy who just takes, whether it be in the form of healthcare, automatic citizenship (if you'll vote for me!!!), or in a gub'mint check.

I don't want "my part" of someone else's accomplishments.

Off my political soapbox now, didn't really mean to hijack this into a Politcal Forum thread.

I figure if it's going to be my first, I should make sure I'm not getting the lemon edition. I assume "affordable to own" implies a lower initial cost and less expensive fixes/repairs/upkeep? I went a few sections down to the 308 area on these boards. The information there is almost overwhelming (I like it like that), but it also looks like there are quite a few "common" issues with the 308's. Most notably electric window problems (grease in the window motor going bad) and fire damage..??? I'm curious, because I also associate reliable with affordable. Am I destined to have similar issues with any model in the $40-50k range? Are these things like the Jaguars of old, that end up sitting in the shop half of the time due to mechanical issues?

I agree with you. However, they all have their handouts they like to spend our hard earned money on. I don't want to get started on the sugar/farm/airline/automobile industry or foreign welfare programs and bail-outs. I would prefer smaller government and less government waste! I just think Obama is the best man for the job. He's easily the smartest candidate, and I think he'll turn out to be reserved (conservative) when it comes to our tax money. He sure as heck won't be blowing billions on a senseless war like the guy we have now!

Where is that religion/politics area anyway?

There were at least five different Ferraris used in the Magnum P.I. series. The first two were GTSi 308s and the latter three were all GTS QVs.

34567 is an '81 GTSi that was used in the '81-'82 series.
    38527 is an '82 GTSi.
45579 is an '83 GTS QV tha was allegedly used in the series.
51941 is an '84 GTS QV.
57685 is an '85 GTS QV.

I don't think there is a "lemon" edition Ferrari. Everyone one of them seem to have common problem areas. Go to the 355 section and you will see people whine about the crappy interiors and warped heads. Your Ferrari could end up in the shop half the time if you buy a car that hasn't been maintained by the PO. And this is REGARDLESS of the price you pay for the car. However, just like old Jags/Triumphs/MGs, if you maintain them they will run. IMHO 308s are less expensive to maintain than say a 12 cylinder Ferrari. But compared to the previously mentioned Brit iron they are bloody expensive. Parts are expensive ($1800 for a starter!!!!!!) and sometimes hard to obtain. But the good news is this board has alternatives or has found alternate parts places for practically everything. One last thing. If you are not used to dealing with classic cars remember this; something will always break. It may be few and far between, but they are old cars. Time does as much damage as miles. Just realize that even with that mythical low miles and babied 308 you can still get slow windows or a failed speedo sensor.

Wasn't senseless if you were one of those millions that were being stepped on and treated like animals by your own government. And never say never...
