Who would you cast? My choices.... Russell Crowe - Magnum Tom Selleck - Behind the scenes Robin Samuel L. Jackson - T.C. Michael Caine - Higgins Ferrari 488 - Magnum's Ferrari
Magnum - Bradley Cooper Rick - Jeremy Renner TC - Jamie Foxx Higgins - Ralph Fiennes Ferrari 488 Spider or California
I am not a big TV watcher so did not know much about Magnum p.i. before buying the 308. After I bought the 308, I watched a couple of episodes on Netflix just to see what the series was like. I was astonished at what I saw. I can't see how making a movie would do anything but ruin the series. The thing that was astonishing to me about the show was just how vulnerable and fallible Magnum was. The character was just a regular human who frequently struggled, and sometimes failed, to figure out the right thing to do. The protagonists in movies have evolved/devolved from regular guys like Magnum, to righteous heros to infaliable superheros. I would loathe to see a Magnum jumping his 488 in slow motion across impossible chasms while nailing scores of enemy with a handgun. I prefer the loveable bumbler of the TV series. (I am probably sounding like a Troll, and I apologize.)
I loved the series but there were some truly awful episodes. The best ones dove into what you described as Magnum's inner demons. Regardless, it's just a tv show and I would like to see a good remake, more drama than comedy, but balanced, like the better episodes were.
This will be as great as the Miami Vice, Dukes of Hazzard and SWAT movies lol My picks: Magnum: tough one...not as serious as Matt Damon but more serious than James Franco. John Krasinski now that hes gotten fit? Rick: Jonah Hill TC: Dwayne Johnson Higgins: Ricky Gervais I agree with the previous comments... at face value, the show looked pretty one dimensional...good looking guy fighting crime in a Ferrari...but then you see how he was essentially a beach bum, very human, patronized by an employer etc. occasional pratfalls and humour.
I think the best of Magnum was the first two seasons - and I watched them all from the evening the pilot aired in 7th grade until I skipped a (required for pledges) fraternity meeting to watch the last episode in college. The first two seasons, maybe add the third, will always be the best to me.
Too bad Eugene Roche isn't around for a part as Luther Gillis. According to IMDB the film is in development. I hope they can capture more of the original's essence than Mann did with the Miami Vice movie.
IMO Caine is way too old. I like Fiennes as M in the latest Bond movies. I think the age difference is closer to Magnum/Higgins but I haven't given it that much tonight.
Everybody mentioned is WAAAAY to old for a remake. IMO, it would be best NOT to do a remake and I can't see that there would be any real demand anyway. Magnum, in the series, would have been, at most, mid 30's so find actors in that age range if you are making a modern version. If you are looking to make a movie about the character NOW...in his late 60's-early 70's, OK...but no one will pay to see it. And yes, Magnum will be jumping chasms/bridges, outrunning explosions (that one REALLY gets me...) and having bullets manage to bounce off his car's windshield and body. The bad guys won't be able to hit anything they shoot at and he will have no trouble shooting everyone with his pistols (yes, two of them) held sideways. Please, leave Magnum alone!
Bradley Cooper 41 Jeremy Renner 45 Jamie Foxx 48 Ralph Fiennes 53 Selleck was 35 in 1980 when series started Manetti was 37 Mosley was 42 Hillerman was 48 I think my list is certainly in the ballpark, certainly not WAAAY too old. I would have never guessed Cooper and Renner were over 40, and hard to believe Foxx is almost 50.
It is a difficult storyline to continue in 2016. The basic premise is a late 30's guy living for free and working as best he could. No way is it even remotely possible to have him STILL mooching off Robin Masters 30 years later when he is in his early 70's but without the Ferrari and RM estate, we lose what it was all about. A prequel wouldn't be a terrible idea. A TV movie with Magnum still in the Navy, deciding to leave and showing how he meets RM. Possibly even revealing how Higgins came to work there ( assuming he isn't RM) or even that he IS RM and how he brought all of it together. Throw in a murder plot somewhere to spice up the story or something. Just a thought
30 year old mooching...ok...I got it OJ Simpson as Higgins Kato Kaelin as Magnum Al Cowlings as T.C. Limo Driver as Rick Magnum's car...Ford Bronco
Stupid TV Show. Should remake "The Hidden" Replace: 308 with 488 Mondial with California Spyder 928 with Panamera Turbo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uxaKkFUMu8k
"It is a difficult storyline to continue in 2016. The basic premise is a late 30's guy living for free and working as best he could." I don't know - I have several friends with 30-something year-old kids at home who can't seem to find a real job despite university degrees...including one with a masters. Actually sounds more current in real life now than it did then. But I will admit, none of them could (or would want to) make it as a PI - even with a Ferrari to drive.
Yeah...storylines have to be relevant for the time and place...you know...kind of like a wookie...very relevant in 2016...no wonder Star Wars did well
Thomas Magnum was a guy in his late 30's early 40's living for free on a wealthy writer's estate and using his Ferrari. That was fundamental to the show but the last time we saw them was 30 years ago. How could we play that now? RM and Higgins character (remember he was a very storied WWII vet) would be in his 90s. Most likely dead now. Magnum most certainly would not still be driving that 308 every day since 1980 and he is 70 something now himself. Unless the estate was willed to him, he has been out of there for years so that part of the base plot is gone too. Besides, the last time we saw him he was leaving for the Navy. I just don't see a continuation now. That ship sailed 5 years after the end of the show for all practical purposes. That's why a prequel makes the most sense. We could see all the events with all the same people that led up to Magnum swimming up to the back of the estate as he did in the opening scene of the pilot. This is also another way to make a valid use of a 308 in the movie which is something we all want to see. We could see why RM decided to create Higgins for himself etc etc. There are so many directions this could go. It would be fun. It would just be so much easier to go back and fill in some blanks from the past and keep 100 % of the shows essence instead of trying to make everyone fit into 2016 where we would have to give up so much of what the original show was about. Seriously, I could almost write this thing. It would be cool.
yeah, I agree, some kind of reunion with the Ferrari but baring in mind that its a classic now. would have worked so much better if it was 15-20 years back, say 10 years after the series ended, now ? 2017 ? just cannot see this, likely be something like Miami vice, all new cast, new car etc etc.
