I was in my 812 SF and accelerating quickly when I got a low fuel warning light and fuel gauge went from nearly full to 1 bar total. I quickly slowed down so not sure if it reduced power. Upon slowing the low fuel light disappeared but it still showed less bars than what I started with. I then went to a gas station and it took 4 gallons to get back to full.

When I restarted it showed a full tank and no error lights. Dealer took a look and said there are no error codes. The car has always been on a tender.

Anyone experienced something similar? Ive never had this happen on a F car before. Hopefully just a computer glitch. Ive driven it a couple of times since and it hasn't reappeared.

If the car sits for months between drives, always "put it to bed" with a full tank, otherwise the sender can get corroded by ambient moisture and that causes it to stick. If the car sits for months with a low fuel level, there you go, that could be it. If so, keep an eye on the fuel level readings, if it bounces around more, might need a new sender.

Yeah Il have to keep an eye out. It sat for a couple of weeks with half a tank so sender might be a possibility.

My experience with the fuel indicator is that it doesn’t carry an “average” but rather a “spot” fuel burn rate in its calculation. So if you’re trailing few miles are really high burn rates (bad traffic or your winding the car out time and time again for a spirited stretch) and it ends up calculating that you’ll run out very quickly at that burn rate. For example, I was 60 miles from empty recently trodding along the interstate and got caught in traffic for 20 min crawling through a few miles and my car said I was imminently out of gas…was freaking out and once I got past the wreck and started normal cruising the average went back up to 40 miles…really poor design frankly. You should always monitor your total miles since last fill up and estimate based on how your travel pattern would have burned fuel rather than your miles to empty.

Yeah I can see that with lower levels of fuel in the tank. In my case I had 20 gallons of gas left on a 24 gallon tank when it freaked out.

Since it happened coincident with accelerating quickly seems like something in the mechanical float circuit got bound up. There are some fuel additives and stabilizers that advertise producing an anti-corrosion environment for the area of the gas tank above the fuel level. Supposed to inhibit the effects of ethanol-based fuels and excessive moisture. Maybe research those and perhaps switch gas stations and keep tank full when stored. That and get rid of the battery if still OEM.

Yeah I thought about the float. Will definitely keep fuel level full when stored. Battery has been switched to an Interstate one already .
