Driving my Mondial, it falters at low revs losing a bank of cylinders and at traffic lights. As I pull away its on 4 cylinders then a loud back fire and we are at the races again! I have pulled the plugs and they are all good. I have changed leads, both caps, rotor arms but still the same.
I think it is down to weak spark what else can I change?

Just moving it back in the garage and I'm finding it hard to select 1st or reverse now! Buts that's another story!

The coils (perhaps just the coil module) can cause these problems.

It's also tricky starting when hot.

Sounds like the coil packs. Swap them over and see if the fault follows

Do you have a T? I had a T with the same problem, it turned out to be the lambda sensors.

I agree with the idea it's a coil pack, which is the small bit about 1/2 the size of a cigarette pack. I think that 4 small screws hold it on. As stated, swap them to the other coil. If the problem changes to that bank of cylinders, that's the problem. Don't forget the thin electrical paste-like coating that should be applied. (Can't remember the name of the compound; is it dielectric something or other?)
A coil pack should be about $160, while a complete coil w/ pack is closed to $450.
    Good luck!

It's a QV = the "coil packs" are inside the DigiPlex ECUs, but it wouldn't hurt to swap the connectors on the DigiPlexes and/or swap the coils to see if the problem moves to the other bank or not. However, before even doing that you could confirm that the AC voltages from the two TDC sensors are similar (and reasonable) at idle RPM and higher RPM. They are a gizmo that might not work well enough at idle to fire the coil pack, but could work a little better, i.e., have a little higher signal with steeper d(volts)/d(time), at a little higher flywheel RPM (which moves the flywheel pin a higher speed past the sensor. Good Hunting!

It was the rotor on my QV, it shortened to the cam shaft end. Starts with an occasional miss, then develops into a lost bank.

Swapped out the coils, she's back on 8 even on idle!
As I was pulling the I noticed the suspect bank coil was loose on the bottom nut, the one with the Earth on it! I had already bought 2 new ones so swapped out anyway, I didn't want to know if that was the problem!

    I'm sure it wasn't..... I think!

If you get this and you suspect the coils, do the following. Start the engine from cold and drive along until you get the misfire- jump out the car with the engine running- if coils then 1 will be warm or hot and the other cold. The cold one is the good coil and the warm or hot coil is breaking down hence the temperature difference.
Same symptoms but fuel raising sump oil level- this is a failure of the diaphragm in the bosch k tronic system- the distribution block with all the banjo bolts and small injection pipes-when this fails it runs max fuel on the individual injector , relative to cylinder diaphragm. You can get a bosch repair kit for £50.

    Hi Fred:

I am resurrecting this old thread because I'd like to know how the Nick's Forza direct ignition is faring over the long run? Are you still enjoying trouble-free motoring? Or have you had to work on the ignition system over the past few years?

    Thanks,
    Sam in Saratoga
