I recently purchased a Testarossa from a dealer in Nevada. The dealer said he was not authorized by the person from whom it bought car to reveal any information about the previous owner. (I know that sounds crazy.) In any event, the car is in great shape and shows about 40,000 miles. I would like to track down previous owners in order to determine what type of maintenance they had done to the car and at what intervals. Is there any sort of directory or data base to which I might have access to find out about the maintenance. By the same token, is there any way to determine if the belt needs changing without taking the car apart?
If any can help I would appreciate it.
    Thanks/Longhorn

There is no maintenance directory so unless you know or can quickly find out otherwise plan on an immediate belt change service to begin your history

With a little more detail someone may recognise the car and direct you towards a previous owner if you're lucky

In the search engine type in 134282 or Carbon McCoy.
He tracks cars by their vin.
Send him a private msg with the vin and ask him if he has any history on the car.

Also another post with details of the car, year interior and exterior color.
Pictures are helpful and any obvious modifications are helpful.
Someone on here might say ... " wow my old car"
You might also ask the dealer what state he obtained the car from, then also post in that regional area.
    Good luch with your search.

Not crazy at all. Many of my clients want privacy and it is never possible to know which do and which do not. Until I have their permission (and sometimes it is impossible to get) I will not provide any information. I would expect the same.

And forgive me for saying so but the time to do a record search if it is important to you is prior to purchase. At that time the seller is motivated to assist. At this point he no longer has a horse in the race. I recently went round and round with a CS owner who bought the car partially predicated on it's reported and undocumented history of service by me. He felt he had a right to the records from me. The records belong to the person who paid my bill and I told him I needed that persons permission. He was never even able to supply me a name and since the sale had already been done the seller was not interested in assisting.

Belts have a date code and it can be seen with the motor in the car. That is in every instance the best way to know their age. Unlike records, the date code does not lie.

If you haven't looked already, CARFAX and AUTOCHECK.
They gather information from more sources than you can believe, give you how many prior owners, where they bought the car, what service was performed and where the car was serviced along with dates. Lot's of clues about your car are provided which, in turn, you can follow up on and, perhaps, learn more. And, they are cheap.

google vin, run carfax and call any dealers or shops that show up on those reports. Hope the purchase price reflected the lack of history. BTW, you didn't even run a carfax pre purchase?

    This.

I got the records for my new-to-me 308, but only because the previous owner provided them all to the dealer as part of the package of stuff that went with the car.

    Excellent advise:

    1) Quick and easy.

    2) offers surprising information.

I was contacted (I live in Florida)
by a gentleman in Holland that had
the chassis to match an engine I had.

    You never know !

Thank you for all the suggestions about how to track down maintenance records. They were very helpful and have given me many avenues to explore.

Several helpful respondents have suggested that if I supply more information, someone might know more about my car and assist me in determining whether it is time for a major service. So, here is some more information about the car, much of which was gleaned from CarFax:
It is a 1990 Red Testarossa with a tan leather interior. It was originally purchased in the Woodland Hills, CA, area. From 2006 until 2012, it was inspected in the San Diego/Fallbrook (CA) area so I assume the owner lived around there. In 2014 it was registered and inspected in Cockeysville, MD and titled in Fairfax, VA. It is completely stock and in great condition with 41,600 miles. I called the Ferrari dealer in San Diego but it had no service records on the car.
So far, no luck in learning about prior maintenance. Any help would be appreciated.

Why can't they print the invoices, and then cut out the owner information? The buyer is after the maintenance history, not the owners personal information.

I agree with Rifledriver - the time to ask is before, not after, the sale.

They can do that ( cut out owners name)
I've had it done for me.
You can often get a good bit of info on a car by googling the vin and matching up with where the car was sold in the past, car fax info etc.

With some research you can venture a good guess of where the car was serviced, call and give the vin and get info on the car.
You would be surprised and how helpful some service managers will be.

I tracked down 12 years of records on my car

That's exactly what they did for me. Otherwise, I told them no deal.

Didn't take them long after I told them that to get me the records without the owner's personal info.
